Minister of Higher Education, Nkandu Luo has dispelled assertions circulating on social media and some sections of society that unions have be banned in public universities.

Prof. Luo said the information circulating on social media is wrong and misleading.

She clarified that government did not ban union activities but introduced a new model of unionism called ‘Guild’.

Prof. Luo explained that unions have moved from the old leadership structure that only allows a few students to participate in union activities to a more inclusive model.

ZANIS reports that the Minister was speaking during a Press Briefing in Lusaka today.

Prof. Luo said students in public universities were given ample time to research on the Guild model, which they have since accepted.

She stated that workshops were held at various higher learning institutions where students were educated on the Guild concept.

Prof. Luo said from the trainings conducted students accepted and embraced the new model of leadership as it was more inclusive compared to the unionism model.

She disclosed that most public universities and colleges have already written new constitutions so as to domestic the Guild concept.

The High Education Minister cited the University of Zambia (UNZA) as one of the higher learning institutions that has already written a new Guild Constitution.

Prof. Luo further said the Acting Dean of students is yet to announce the date when the new constitution will be launched.

She hoped that with the new leadership concept, riots will reduce in institutions of higher learning.

    • Madam Minister, it is not the model of unionism which is a problem but the failure by government to meet it’s obligations. What do you mean Unionism is not inclusive? Viva meetings are held usually at night where every student is free to express their concerns and some issues are sorted, contentious issues are taken on to relevant authorities by the Union with the guidelines and blessings of the student body. Your desperation by sponsoring workshops to impose a Guild Concept smells a fish. You want PF cadres to infiltrate the system so that the student body remains at your mercy.

    • He could have called Hakainde that not the learned professor, Mr. Little boy and your little boy CHILDISH leader of little boys.

    • People like Nkandu Luo is exactly the reason why even the Zambian Government cannot function well. Just like you cannot dictate to the students how to operate their grievance channelling procedure, is the same reason why you cannot have the Chinese come to Zambia and give you terms on how they will plunder your resources, woman! You as government that represents your own citizens interests will negotiate the best terms for your citizens to maximise the benefit for your country now and in the future. Nkandu Luo go back to school!

    • Nkandu Luo you just make me sick! It’s easier to train a monkey. If you mould students and children to think in a restricted way you are closing their scope of thinking and hindering the progress of the country. In any case that will not even work in this era. Fuseki!

  1. On Tuesday this week, Professor Luo accused the UPND of causing the riots at the University of Zambia after its Choma Central Member of Parliament Cornelius Mweetwa wondered whether Professor Luo thought she had been too heavy handed on the students by banning the University of Zambia students Union.
Professor Luo also vowed that there will be no unionism in universities.

    We are in problems .
This shameless woman must just take of her wig tione pala.

  2. This man has a big problem, he has no leadership qualities what so ever, her or sorry his parliamentary seat is still hanging in limbo, yet they still keep him in his positions as incompetent as he is, transgender. Guild my foot!!!

  3. This an appendage of the deadwood and corrupt lot in a non – functional thieving administration which has overtime the people’s welcome. The dishonourable thieves should just pack their bags and leave.

    • Dung is a bad thing to be near brains. I am sure the Professor can attest to it that it can cause MAD COW DISEASE. These guys can do well in a rodeo in Texas.

    • I have seen a lot of wasted years in the little boy CHILDISH that is why he will lose for the sixth time in 2021 HAGAIN! Then, you will learn what WASTED YEARS mean.

  4. Indeed it’s good to try other ideas that can work. But land comfortable with the statement that RIOTS will reduce. Reduce?????? No!! If new concept will not wipe out riots completely then there is no need to go for it. My concept is to abolish this seggregative meal allowances if you can’t extend it to other zambians who are learning in other varsities.

  5. Ati guilt thats disaster. Students accepted just for the sake and will do their business as usual. Too much wigging makes women dull – the case of prophetles Lao. Luck of work huge salaries now it has taken them to social media – fighting FaceBook.
    Disaster!!!!!

  6. Load of rubbish. She should just resign and let us have someone competent to run the higher education system in the country.

  7. what a professor , who can be lost within herself. speaking heaps of rubbish when people are still mourning their dear one. shame on you.

  8. I guess we should also change the type of governance to a more inclusive one. How can we have less than 100 ministers managing the affaires of and on behalf of 15 million people. Some reasoning sure

  9. What causes riots in higher learning institutions is not unionism but discontent among students because govt tend to treat them like they are nothing when they raise issues pertaining to their welfare. There is an adage which says that a hungry man is an angry man. The govt has to handle education with the seriousness it deserves. If govt thinks changing the mode of unionism is the answer, then they are yet to have a rude shook of their lives.

  10. So now it’s government through the minister who is going to dictate how the students unions are going to be managed or run. Then what’s the point of having unions. might as well be telling students directly what they can and cannot do without forming a union.

  11. Prof Luo has one problem: ‘I KNOW IT ALL ATTITUDE’. Guild, union, trade union etc whatever you want to call it, the issue still remains respecting other stakeholders as part of the team although you differ in perspectives. Yes, I mean respecting lecturers and students.

  12. It is important to let everyone express themselves freely on this forum. This is how we share ideas.
If you check, Sharon has been very outspoken on all matters freely. You can even tell her level of Education by how she writes but what is even more interesting is that she calls some educated people as very dull because she is free to do so.
I support her all the way. She may not be accomodative to other ideas because she is not well educated so we need to understand her.
Sharon mwandi just write what you think.

  13. Mr Ugly Monster, You are not worth calling Prof to start with. You are hereby stripped of that title you corruptly got using late Dr Manda’s ideas!
We are fully aware why you have decided to destroy UNZA! You and your other Ugly of Uglies fro Ministry of Lands want to sell UNZA land to AVIC!! It won’t work! Us former UNZA students have resolved to save the institution from further mutilation! We have resolved to take you to court! See you in court!

  14. This Minister does not sound like ‘a professor has spoken’. She keeps on with bits and pieces of this and that and the other! Is she OK upstairs?

  15. Funny, but i was hoping someone on this forum would shed more light on what a guild system is like – and examples of where it exists. Nay, just insults to further polarise the sides. Looks like i have to do the research myself.
