The Economics Association of Zambia has denied advocating for a law that bars citizens from commenting on economic issues.

National Secretary Mutisunge Zulu said the Association refutes all accusations, misquotes and exaggerations circulating in the media.

Mr. Zulu said the EAZs mandate is sound economic policy advocacy and as such has proposed for a legislative framework similar to other professions such as law and accounting that will instil discipline and regulate sanity in the faculty.

He explained that this proposal was necessitated by the rise in uninformed pronouncements by individuals purporting to be economists on various platforms especially at a fragile time as this when the nation is weathering an economic storm.

“Misinformation could also have adverse effects that could cause investor panic and nervousness to ultimately hurt the economy of which we are all a part of. However, the Association wishes to clarify that it has never at any instance barred or has plans to bar citizens from commenting on economic issues as one does not need to be an economist to comment on issues in line with freedom of speech”. He said.

Mr. Zulu has urged media houses to consult professionals from institutions such as the Economics Association of Zambia, Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research to clarify on economic and business related issues.

“This is what is pertaining in other professions such as medicine, accounting, engineering and law. Responsible reporting and pronouncements backed by facts, theory or evidence are welcome as EAZ advocates healthy debates as opposed to malicious utterances”. Mr. Zulu added.

He said as stated in its constitution, the EAZ will restrict itself to dealing with business and economic issues by providing independent and impartial advisory to both the state and the nation as a whole.

  1. I think they should ban hjoe moono. I can’t stand people who campaign to be employed by pf government. Ati aliba humble yet he desperate for a government post. How can such men be objective

    • You guys met Lungu at StateHouse, what did you advise him regarding the state of our economy? and what was his response? We are counting on professionals such as you but so far you have been a let down

    • For several years, EAZ stood by & said nothing as PF contracted unsustainable foreign debt & looted the national treasury.

It’s irresponsible that they now want to stifle the voices that have been vocal in advocating for PF to be held accountable for the mess they’ve created.

If Habazooka is campaigning for a job from Lungu, let him apply directly instead of using the suffering masses as a tissue paper.

    • EAZ, may you differentiate between practicing Economics and commenting on economics. The trouble is that you have not defined the practice, which your members will need to follow with its code of conduct. Debating has nothing to do with the practice. Regulating practice calls for defining the framework for formal engagement of your member with the employers or customers. As for debating a Law, which you are also doing by creating that framework to guide the practice you need not be a Lawyer. However, drafting the law one shall, make the use of shall, need to be a lawyer.

  3. Yes as one does not need to be an economist to comment on issues in line with freedom of speech and in line with overpriced Lusaka Ndola duo carriage.
No need to have even basic economics to know that the fire fimo fimo were over priced.
No need to have basic economics to comment that fuel prices are just too high for most Zambians, No need to be an economist to comment that the plan that the government has bought for one person at over $47m was not necessary when the country is suffering from heavy stealing and corruption making the poor become the worst beggars.
No need to be an economist to comment that Mukula tree is being exported through stealing by some people at state house to make cash for themselves through dubious means. Hahaha the lis is endless. And the more you give…

  4. But everyone watched a video in which EAZ President Habazoka clearly proposed and advocated for such a law. There is no misquoting in this case.

  5. Habazooka is campaigning for him self to be part of the cartel of thieves, this is quiet embarrassing on his part, but when you are hungry embarrassing is the last thing on your mind.

  6. Its shows why this EAZ and Gov should surely Invest more in Financial and Economic educations The days of Dr Evil of Citi Bank are long gone and market regulations and stability has been move into supervisory and financial stability on the Firm and market level Markets are
known to be self correcting. and Stability is an outcome of usual normal business everyday activity with constant support from regulators on the firm and market level that proves to be effective

Its like Reading the testimony to the US Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC) on 13 January 2010, by then Jamie Dimon, chairman of JP Morgan, told two anecdotes that offer a curious juxtaposition.5 The first was this My daughter…

  7. called me up from school and said “Daddy, what’s a financial
crisis?” And without trying to be funny, I said, “It’s something that happens every five to seven years”. And she says “So why is everyone so surprised…?” So we weren’t– we shouldn’t be surprised.’ The readings continued the point is Financial crisis do occure and markets will normally self correct

There is already a regulator in supervisions and Financial stability and learning from Bank of England and

  8. Days of Dr Evil in the Case of CITI bank are long gone and markets and regulations have moved to self regulations also

  9. Its repressive and ridiculous to gag nationals from making comments on a profession that is based on “what ifs” which affect our daily existence. Economics is not a hard science and is based fundamentals matters that many can grasp. Let the people talk!! The economists have been talking to government, but this government has still succeeded in clocking up an astronomical debt that does not require an economist to appreciate that its unsustainable!

  10. To me this applies mainly to the media houses who are in the habit of hosting every Jim and Jack as economists. Its not at all possible to shut up the masses from discussing any particular topic especially in this day of social media however for one to be given press time or coverage on any media platform to offer so called economic solutions or advise such a one just has to be a qualified Economist or related field. People can blog, write all they want about the economy like they do on court cases for instance then you have a LAZ position representing the professionals in that field. Thats the sanity required and being advocated for.
I m NO economist but I fully comprehend the EAZ position and Dr LH’s sentiments.

  11. THEY WILL SIMPLY LOSE RELEVANCE AND WOULD BE MEMBERS INVESTORS ARE WELL INFORMED TO BE MISLED BY SOCIAL UNSTRUCTURED COMMENTARIES THAT DO NOT INCORPORATE ESGS

INFACT IF EAZ IS ACTIVE IN THEIR EARLIER OF ECONOMIC EXPERTISE INVESTORS WILL TURN MORE TO THEIR FIRMS AND MEMBERSHIP THAT GETTING WORRIED OF THE NOISE THAT SETTLES WITH THE DUST QUICKLY AS INFORMATION FILTERS NO INVESTOR WILL TRADE ON COSTLY NOISE UNSTRUCTURED ECONOMIC COMMENTS BUT WILL BE MADE AWARE TO SEEK FOR MORE AND THAT IS WHERE EAZ SHOULD COME IN AND COMFIRM

  12. ITS LOVELY ALSO TO REFER TO THE LETTER OF “J M KEYNES LETTER R HARROD OF 4 JULY 1938 LIKE THE OTHER EAZ ELDER MUNO HAD SAID THERE

ITS ALSO IMPORTANT TO SEE AND OBSERVE THAT OUR WORLD IS SHAPED IN PART AND MOST BY OUR INTERACTIONS OF HUMAN S LIKE MINDED AND NOT OFTEN CONFIRMING OUR KNOWLEDGE SET AND OUTLOOK OR VIEW AS IT WERE THESES HUMAN BEINGS MAY NOT BE AS RATIONAL AS WE MAY WANT THEM TO BE IN DECISION MAKING BUT TOGETHER WE ALTER THE FUTURE OF THE ZAMBIAN ECONOMY REASONING WELL WITH THE THEORY OF REFLEXIVITY

THATS MY OBSERVATION I END HERE OKAY //

  13. YES THEY CAN ALSO BUY SPACE HERE AS EAZ AND CONFIRM THEIR REASONING THROUGH DAILY OR WEEKLY BULLETIN AND PEOPLE WILL FOLLOW AND CONFIRM

    SWITZERLAND

  14. In any profession there are quakes but in EAZ it seems quakes in their leadership. How can a qualified economist say Zambians economy is sound and robust.
