Government has deferred further the planned phasing out of Toyota Hiace minibuses on the Zambian roads from January 2019 to 2022.

Authorities had initially planned to phase out the buses on January 1st 2018 through Statutory Instrument number 71 of 2016 because they do not provide the necessary passenger safety but was deferred to January 2019 to allow sector players prepare adequately.

Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba told Hot FM News in Lusaka that the January 2019 deadline is not feasible as there is more discussion that needs to happen.

Mr. Mushimba said all the conversations that needs to happen between the manufacturers of the seat belts and the transporters cannot take place between now and January next year hence the extension of the deadline to 2019.

He said the move will also allow sector players to prepare adequately for the transition.

  1. Dull Brain again…what are you deferring now without giving a valid reason..you know Toyota Hiace with modified seats is not safe…instead of removing duty on 32+ seater buses and leaving the proposed date but you are thinking of your kaponyas and 2021 elections!!

    • How do you leave unsafe vehicles on the road for 4 more years?

      These guys are jokers.

They only have one thing on their minds.

      Elections in 2021.

    • “A dull brain” is better than a dung brain. Well done GRZ. The Toyota Hiaces can be dangerous if the driver is an UPND guy with the brain like this guy above @1.

    • What a styupid idyot they have for that important ministry. .
Why is he possessed with January 2019??? The PF-Airline is January 2019, PF-President Sukhoi Jet is January 2019. Watch that guy maybe he is suicidal

  2. Ba mini bus driver mwanvela, muzanyunyiwa monga Bantu Baku kàbwe, remember how mulungushi textiles came to life, during campaigns, this guy should have just said hiaces will be put out of operation after elections.

  3. Why is it that all their reasoning is now centred on 2021 elections? Political survival for them is more important than uplifting the standard of living for Zambians. Is should be the other way round.

  4. Scared that they would have lost the support of all kaponyas remember that some their ministers come from this back ground, that’s why the bad decision’s we have with this lot

  5. Mushimba and company are already seeing themselves beyond 2021, though I am not sure whether or not this is a good thing but I am concerned that someone still wants a 2016 case to be heard. Can UPND Presidential advisers tell HH that according to the current constitution presidential election petitions are supposed to be heard with 14 days after final results have been announced? It appears in 2022 someone will be crying about 2021.

  6. In 2019 is the time to move the phasing out again till after 2021.
2019 date gives PF leverage over the drivers and call boys for 2021….in 2019 moving the date again will be seen as a present for votes come 2021….

  7. There is no new registration for these buses. The ones on the road are losing market every day to better buses. It is becoming apparent to the owners that they bring in less income than the running cost. With their ancient unadulterated metal, it is more profitable to recycle them to Kafue Steel furnaces than keep them on the road.

The Minister is saying, it is better they get enough time to die naturally. Those persisting to remain by 2022 will be dealt with by an S.I. Not the first time that dangerous buses have been dealt with this way. Tata, DCM etc. Predictable that followers of HH Darth Vader see this the wrong way.
