150 suspected cannabis traffickers nabbed in Luapula province

The Drug Enforcement Commission in Luapula Province has arrested 159 people for trafficking in various quantities of cannabis between July and September this year.

Among the arrested include 130 males, 17 females, two Congolese nationals, eight male and two female juveniles respectively.

Various quantities of loose and dry cannabis, fresh plants weighing about 167. 9 kilograms and 22.8 kilograms seeds of cannabis with Nchelenge recording the highest number of arrests.

ZANIS reports that Drug Enforcement Commission Luapula Province Region Commander Martin Chitamba who disclosed this today also disclosed that the Commission’s Education and Counselling Departments in the Province are making strides in awareness creation against drug abuse in the region and beyond.

“ We as DEC are ensuring that members of the public are sensitized on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking and that they have so far managed to reach out to over 5000 people from communities, work places and colleges, “ he said.

He has since expressed disappointment at the high number of youths abusing cannabis especially school going pupils in examination classes.

He however, says the commission is working hand in hand with the Ministry of Education through the Provincial Education Office to sensitize and reach out to pupils in schools and tertiary colleges.

Mr. Chitamba has urged the members of the public in Luapula to report those found wanting especially in relation to drug abuse and trafficking in a bid to curb the scourge in the Province.

  1. Just legalize it you fooooools there is a shortage of herb in Canada ….Zambia is sitting on GMO free herbs and you are sleeping!!

  2. What is the reason behind other counties legalizing weed? Are we as Zambians so different from them? Are we as a country losing money we can save once we legalize marijuana?

  3. That’s a better industry to legalize and generate revenue from tax. Only problem is regulation and so I would understand why they would not at this time.

  4. Ganja will add to our forex reserves. The countries that have legalized it don’t even have enough and so we need to move in quickly to fill the gap before other countries move in while we are still debating.

  5. Typical of dull Zambians! Some people have a good idea to start an export business and instead of helping them with a loan from the presidential empowerment funds, they get arrested and jailed!
