The Euromonitor Report of 2018 has ranked Zambia as a country with the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in the region.

According to the illicit alcohol trade research finding presented in the Euromonitor report in Lusaka today, Zambia has stood out first at 9.84% followed by South Africa.

The Euromonitor report of 2018 was presented today by Mrs. Carmen Van Niekerk at the Zambia Breweries mentorship and youth empowerment program held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka.

The report also highlights illicit trade of alcohol in Zambia and how smuggling of alcoholic beverages have contributed to fiscal loses to the industry.

Vice President, Inonge Wina who was represented by Permanent Secretary (PS), in her Office Stephen Mwansa, said for Zambia to realise its vision of becoming a prosperous middle income country by 2030, the youth must take the lead.

The Vice President said government is determined to mainstream the young people in the socio-economic development of the country by developing and implementing policies that shall create an enabling environment for young people to fully participate in the national development.

Ms. Wina welcomed the newly launched mentorship and youth empowerment program saying the program will help young people and make the communities better.

Mr. Kanyama said the effects of illicit alcohol have devastating effects on the economic growth of the country.

He said the local authorities are partly to blame for failing to regulate illicit alcohol trade and abuse of the substance especially by the young people in the country.

Speaking at the same event, Zambia Association of Manufacturers Chief Executive Officer, Chipego Zulu stated that illicit trade of alcohol is impacting negatively on the revenue of the manufacturers of alcohol who she said, have invested heavily in the industry.

    • Yes now this is something. Atleast Zambia start to win something.
Cabinet Secretary Patrick Mvunga, top civil servant, should claim alcohol belt.
      CONGRATULATIONS.
This is something we should celebrate this weekend!! Mwamukolo!

    • Never will I take the alcohol because I have joy and I do not need to purchase “happiness” brewed by someone and put in a bottle to destroy me, my family and society. Also, the Holy Spirit in me is enough and I get drank on him daily. We should teach our CHILDREN the importance of being drank on the Holy Spirit instead of eating bitter herbs or drinking bitter stuff which make the heart as calloused as Larry Mweetwa, BoSpakata, NEDCOZ Inferiority Complex, Nose Demon, WHISTLE or CHILDISH himself.

    • Now I am confused.

Sharon does not drink supposedly, and she gives good reasons why alcohol is bad. But yet she supports the number drunkard in the country that is individually responsible for this ranking of our country.

      Yaba.

    • Don’t believe that report! I have travelled and I know some countries which imbibe! Zambia is no way near any one of these. Do you know of countries where you have drinking sprees after every meal….there you are! The problem of Zambia, and why people are throwing thrash at the country is that we are timid people and hardly defend our country. We don’t stand up to demonstrate our rich heritage. We can’t even defend our country from leaders, civil servants and fake businessmen reaping apart our nation. Its a shame….Remember that, “all it takes for evil to triumph is that good people do nothing.”

    • At @Sharon says she has joy!!! Really
She spends all her days denigrating one individual. Is this what you call “joy” ??
Even claiming the holy spirit is in you?Really

Stop mocking God, that is if you even believe in God

Please spare us. You are as bitter as they come. You are not God. Leave the man. After all this is not your country alone

Your late hero diverted cholera money, allocated houses to himself because of his position, introduced pangas in politics, moved RDA to state house for looting. For the full list please see Margaret Mwanakatwe’s list. Why cant you have a continuous tirade on that.??

      Nauseous Hypocrite

  1. Zambians gotta drown out their miseries with alcohol somehow . The filthy pit latrines, the poverty and general chaotic decay of Zambian life can make you want to drink just to cope.

    • It is an illusion to think things will get better after taking shelter in alcohol. Aggression, depression and frustration is the result and this increases with every few glasses.

“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” Proverbs 20

  2. Raise the taxes on alcohol, send the national service to arrest culprits of smuggling. Help council police with the above defense wing and I promise you this will be put in check.

  3. I remenber during the time of chorela out break, goverment burned churches and allowed bars saying if they close the bars the economy will be affected. so its not supprising because our economy relies partly on beer.

  4. After winning the Africa cup in 2012 and the under 20 in 2016, I think this is the next big one. Yes, champions of Africa once again

  5. There are no jobs for the youths, hence they just drink..
And moreover they say “Amenshi yakonka umufolo”
    Water follows the drainage

  6. The next thing we are about to here is a public announcement that after a wide research, zambia has been ranked the top corrupt country..

    • The next thing we will hear after research is that a CORRUPT PRIVATIZATION THIEF and MONEY LAUNDERING UPND leader has been arrested.

  7. Atleast if GRZ had any vision, they would take advantage of this statistic …..where do all the bottles for this alcohols come from , which ever country producers the bottles is making serious good money and our drankards are providing employment in another country to bottle makers….

    • If Zambians themselves were smart enterpreneurs, they would not only be consumers but also take the opportunity to invest in the market and start up new brands to compete with Mosi by Zambian breweries. This is the difference between us and Germans for example. They also rank high in beer consumption in Europe but they equally dominate the brewing industry with premium brands.

    • At least if UPND had any vision, it could be concentrating on winning voters from every region and quit on their TRIBALISM PRONE REGIONAL H-ORGANISATION.

  8. With the No.1 drunkard leading the country and No.2 leading the finance ministry we were bound to get this one hands down, no contest.

  9. I am Sure Edgar is happy about these statistics coz he is part of them, well done instead of creating employment we r number in the most useless thing. The sad part is that most of the beers are not even brewed in Zambia, what a shame

  10. Fantastic! We have FAILED to bring afcon home since 2013. At least now we have a title. Who’s gonna talk?

  11. Better than nothing, I know baletwibila because the way I know Zambians naka beer tefintu.
Can we meet and celebrate for this achievement? Bring your own food drinks will be available NO CASH BAR on this day. All drinks will be free.

  12. While the statistics could be something to go by, the picture depicted of women drinking is not from Zambia. The beer in the picture is from West Africa, most likely Ghana. Club is from Ghana and it is one brand of foreign beer than never hits the Zambian market. Try to get real scenarios when painting a picture about a nation. One more thing, try to edit your posts. Some of your posts have terrible English. Half a time it is difficult to follow what one is trying to say.

  13. Zambia certified with the beer commander(BC) certificate in the region. This could be a good thing. I’m opening my Bar soon!

  14. If I am not mistaken, this is the third time such an honour has been bestowed on Zambia, two of those honours in respect of our womenfolk who befitted Zambia with the tag the country with the worst women drunkards in the world, two years in the running. Then this, quite some record that consequently puts Zambia on the map where it belongs in terms of such statistics.

  15. It’s not news anymore. First republican president Kenneth Kaunda even threatened to resign if we continue with our heavy drinking. At bars we would be shouting “Let him resign!” Little did we realize that the habit would be proved to be counterproductive.

  16. Negative publicity about zambia campaign orchestrated by the dark cloud group, dark reporter, dark leader and celebrated by devils on this podium. Just check them. Comment by comment. The devil is in the detail.
