The Lusaka City Council has apprehended 899 vendors from July to October, 2018 of which 290 appeared in the Fast Track Court and were convicted accordingly.

LCC Public Relations Manager George Sichimba said of the convicted number, 53 failed to pay the prescribed fines resulting in them serving a custodial sentence of two weeks simple imprisonment while 237 managed to pay fines.

Mr. Sichimba said during the same period under review, 49 people were apprehended for illegal collection and dumping of waste in undesignated places contrary to the law with Six being imprisoned after failing to pay penalties.

He said another 220 traders were warned for non subscription to any solid waste management system with another 60 traders penalised for trading in insanitary conditions contrary to the Public Health Act.

Mr. Sichimba has warned that the anti vending operations and inspection of public places have been intensified and those found wanting will be made to account for their actions.

He said the anti vending activities have been boosted by the recruitment of more council police officers and the procurement of Seven light trucks dedicated to same activities adding that the local authority is determined to push back vendors who have come back into CBD and Kamwala trading areas.

Mr. Sichimba however emphasised that the Council can only succeed in controlling vendors with the support of all residents in the city by not buying food and non food items from vendors and also give support to council Police officers.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sicgimba has reminded all Lusaka residents and visitors alike to maintain high levels of hygiene during this rainy season to avoid contracting water borne diseases that come with the season.

He said residents should observe all health tips being disseminated in the media by various stakeholders.

  1. This policy will backfire, for most vendors this is about survival.Manage street vending and make it lucrative for the local authorities, this is potential national incomel, put them on Lumumba Freedomway and Cha Cha Cha, then provide ablution blocks for them, let the revenue help the council instead of giving it to cadres…am sure this sounds confusing to our dull PF…

    • Good job LCC. But do not just remove them from their trading places. Provide a place where they can trade from legally. Just removing them with no alternative is not the way to go—and may force some to begin engaging in criminal activities. Remember they derive their livelihood from this. Other than that, continue enforcing the law. KEEP LUSAKA CLEAN, KEEP ZAMBIA CLEAN.

  2. And yet the pf thieves who stole social cash transfer funds are still roaming the streets freely with the blessing of that ugly rat called lungu

  3. Imwe ba PF its these vendors that made PF.

    A cabinet minister has

    4 SUVs

    Free fuel

    Free talk time

    Free water( allowance s)

    Free power (allowances)

    Free servant s

On the other hand you have some trying to put kapenta on the table and you set council dogs on her

Am a non partisan political consultant.

  4. Let me say this again! Please ba PF, abolish that Ministry of “religion affairs” and let that same woman minister become MINISTER OF RUBBISH (collections/disposal). Let her organise fellow women, the young pipo roaming the streets in the country to START bringing to her ministry tons and tons of RUBBISH for a fee. It won’t take long before you notice; there will be no more rubbish and no chorela in Zambia ever.

  5. Vendors are back with more force than ever. LCC has failed to control these street vendors so please bring back the military.

  6. All in all there is a problem of too many vendors in Lusaka city, there is also a problem of too many cars so why don’t we also start restricting the number of cars that can move on the roads daily. Let companies buy mini buses so that they can ferry their own workers then after that we should start depopulating the city by forcing idling youth to go to the land at various resettlement sites across the country.

  7. And this notion of “what are we going to feed our children must stop”…you as a human being should not just be making children as if it is a game. This is why the streets are full with street kids! This attitude must change, only have kids if you have the means to take care of them if you don’t then there should actually be a law to prevent chaps from bringing children onto this planet. God said before multiply be fruitful…being fruitful means you must have purpose and your efforts must bear fruit you should not multiply if you are not fruitful but just a lazy cretin sitting at the corner selling mishanga for a fast coin…go to the land and work on it bane!

  8. These guys called vendors are human beings needing wanting to survive say after day..
If our leaders really mean well for these guys, then the solution lies in the police’s they introduce.. we have minister Lusambo advocating for a China town so Chinese brothers and sisters can trade fairly or without hindrance.. what about our vendors and fellow sisters and brothers? Would it not be ideal to have them trade in a conducive environment? Would making market fees and sanitation much less costly not help? Would removing cadres from market places not help??
Let’s love one another and do what is right for our children’s children..

  9. Street vending is a wrong menace it promotes a culture where there are no rules and no law & order. Look at that dirty chaotic CBD and tell me that any investor would want to locate their African headquarters here in this jungle.

  10. They must get arrested for having helped PF get to the state House controlling seat. Its their monster or Lilomba which they helped create. They are the ones who shouted the loudest, Pabwatoooo!! Let them reshout it again if they can from their respective jail cells on empty stomachs kkkkkkk

  11. Those running Zoona,Airtel,Zamtel booths are making the town look dirty. To me those ones and hawkers along Cairo road are also venders.Let the be removed. The other thing is indiscriminate parking of vehicle’s along the Cbd.You council police are doing nothing. See the confusion from post office up to somewhere around Findeco.People just park on the road with impunity and roam around town and these people are friends to your council police. Don’t just make certain statements from the comfort of your offices go out and see what people are talking about.
