Zambia Railways Limited has temporarily suspended train movements on the Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line due to damage caused by heavy rains on both the Zambian and Malawian sides.

Company Acting Public Relations Manager Sombe Ng’onga said initial reports indicate that there are serious wash-aways on the Chipata -Mchinji line which has also affected movement of trains on the Nacala Corridor in general.

Mrs. Ng’onga said Zambia Railways and the Government have dispatched Engineers to Chipata to assess the extent of the damage and to determine remedial works necessary to restore the line.

She assured Business clients and members of the public that Zambia Railways is working round the clock to ensure normal operations are restored within the shortest time possible.

Mrs. Ng’onga has also appealed to customers who may be affected by the closure of the railway line, to exercise patience as they carry out restoration works.

Zambia Railways Limited operates the Chipata-Mchinji Railway line on a stretch of 24 km from Chipata in the Eastern province connecting with CEAR Railways in Malawi and CDN Railways of Mozambique up to the Port of Nacala.
