The Recent heavy rains experienced in Kitwe district have caused enormous damage to some roads and bridges ,rendering them impassable, District Commissioner (DC) Binwell Mpundu has said.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kitwe, Mr Mpundu indicated that road network in the city has been affected since the onset of rain season.

He said his office has received several complaints from the public over the potholes that have developed on the roads, posing a danger to motorists.

The DC has however, assured motorists that patching of the affected areas will commence at the end of the rain season.

He has appealed to motorists using roads in bad shape to be cautious and care for other road users.

Mr Mpundu also disclosed that three bridges connecting residential areas namely Nkana East, Chipata, Mulenga and Ndeke, Chiwala and Jambo drive have been reported damaged.

He has since expressed gratitude to Kwacha Member of Parliament (MP), Joseph Malanji who has come to the aid of the residents from Nkana East and Ndeke whose bridge has collapsed.

Meanwhile, three government schools located in kwacha and chimwemwe constituencies have had part of the classroom blocks roof blown off due to strong winds.

Mr Mpundu said his office has since engaged the Disaster, Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to address the matter.

He further noted that the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) is also making efforts to source resources internally to make the class conducive for pupils.

The DC adds that 32 occupied houses in Kamatipa and Kawama compounds are reported to have been flooded.

He explained that failure by the contractor to complete works on a drainage system necessitated the situation.

    • When you focus on buying luxury SUVs and salarly increments instead of erecting proper drainage systems this what happens. No one will come to tell you to that your zip is open and your item is exposed. You must have the common sense to put safeguards in place to ensure if your zip is open by accident at least you are wearing ka bamba that will keep you manhood concealed. It’s the same with govt expenditure, they spend on lavish things which add no value to the economy or well being of Zambians. We need drainage systems to protect roads and prevent diseases like cholera, we need clean and we’ll stocked hospitals, more schools, better conditions in the prisons and revised legal system. Dont expect sadistic IMF or UN to tell you this, you yourself must wake up.

    • Patching up a problem means you have not dealt with it .You have just pretended to have solved it and waiting for it to come back .Find a permanent solution clueless town leader .

    • 90% of Kitwe roads are riddled with potholes and are next to impassable so i don’t think the rains have anything to do with this sir. Kindly work on the roads and drainage’s and less on the excuses.

  1. City authorities must note that this attitude of leaving bridges without maintaince will cost the nation dearly. From the time in memorial the Nkana east bridge was only used by water works company and when the council sold plots across and population grew they never expanded the bridge ,it still remained single lane bridge. We are not safe until property or a life is lost do we see care from the city authority. Let’s not wait to the last minute for it reduces development and growth of the city. Council engineers should work by going round to inspect structures in the city. Before and during the rain season. We get too comfortable for nothing. All the mentioned bridges have out lived there life span and it’s over due since there were replaced.

  2. What do you mean after rainy season? You mean we have to put up with that damage for four months? Please!!!!!

  3. NO NO NO BA DC WE CAN NOT WAIT FOR THE 3 MONTHS FOR THE RAINS TO END,PLEASE ENGAGE THE MINES AND OTHER COOPERATE ENTITY TO HELP ESPECIALLY THE BLACK MOUNTAIN MINING FIRM (CHAPAMO)BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THE ROAD DAMAGE.

    • How much Tax is Chapamo paying???Are you in Kitwe?Do you know how many overloaded tipper Trucks are on the Kitwe roads especially Central street and Chibuluma road?

    • You think Chapamo will pay tax? Who is Chapamo? PF when we tell you that you put a gang of monkeys in government you say people are bitter

  4. Infrastructure, we can’t stint on spending; spend to build quality structures. Investigate why building contractors (biggest criminal group in Zambia), are not completing works like drainage in time as population expands into new areas.

Where is our money going honourable dudes and dames in Parliament? Riddle us that!

  5. How much Tax is Chapamo paying???Are you in Kitwe?Do you know how many overloaded tipper Trucks are on the Kitwe roads especially Central street and Chibuluma road?

  6. In Europe rain or snow does not stop works especially on roads. Are you telling us that it is raining non stop in Kitwe.

  7. Rains have nothing to do with the roads. This should hv bn worked on a long time ago before the onset of rains. Patching potholes is not a solution because it doesnt take long before whatever is used washes away.
