Lusaka Province Bowman Lusambo has called for the protection of workers from exploitation at the hands of employers.

Mr Lusambo said the Lusaka Provincial Administration will not tolerant employers that are in the habit of abusing the rights of their workers.

He said Zambia has adequate labour laws which employers should be adhering to.
Mr. Lusambo said his office has been receiving numerous petitions from workers who are suffering abuse at the hands of their employers.

He was speaking on Friday when he addressed aggrieved workers at Eva Products in Makeni area who have a standoff with management over the payment of gratuities before offering them new contracts.

Mr Lusambo informed the workers that he had negotiated that no one will be fired from employment before being paid their gratuity which should be paid by end of February.

He also informed the workers that management has also agreed that no new contracts will be signed until the gratuities are paid.

Mr Lusambo warned employers especially foreign investors that abusing Zambian workers is tantamount to insulting the government of Zambia.

The Lusaka Province Minister later addressed former casual workers at the Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia in Kafue who have also petitioned his office to intervene in a dispute over the low redundancy packages they have received after their contracts expired.

Mr Lusambo was informed that some former casual workers received as little as K200 after working at NCZ for over six months, a situation he said was unacceptable.

He promised to intervene in the matter and ensure that the workers receive decent packages and that those that will be given fresh contracts receive better conditions of service.

    • Lusambo is such a drama queen. Look at the way he is standing in the first picture. I like him though because even though the educated UPND elite on LT keep calling him kabova, he is smart enough to know that people only need simple, understandable, layman’s language to give you a vote; which is far more effective than “looking and sounding” presidential if your obsession in life is to be a president.

    • Lusambo is campaigning… for himself. When the employee knows he can run to him, and be heard. That’s family-votes for him. When he humiliates traffic officers. That’s driver-votes for him. He’s scoring so far. Chase him from the party, and he shall raise his own… a formidable one. Keep him, and he shall continue campaigning.

  1. The labor ministry is sleeping. It is the government responsibility to protect worker rights. I find it hard to believe that our government has not put in place mechanisms that would protect workers 100%. It is not the fault of foreigners, but failure by the ministry (S) that enforce such laws. There was no need for Hon. Bowman to visit Eva Products for that reason. He should have been doing something better. Someone is sleeping and not doing his/her job. Tax payers money is wasted.

  2. For the first time I am very impressed with Lusambo. He has demonistrated true leadership. Kambwili does the same but he is attacked each time he speaks for the poor workers. Keep it up sir protect the interest of the Zambians suffering at the hands of cruel infestors.

  3. Where is Joyce Nonde Simukoko, the Labour Minister? She was very vocal when she was a labour unionist. This time she is as quiet as a graveyard. It is pointless people demonstrating at the provincial minister’s office when we have minister of labour. This lady should be fired. She is just too talkative for nothing. We need ministers who are pragmatic. Laws are there to be followed not to be filed and gather dust on the shelves. There is no point in keeping the minister who is not working. These are the same people who are creating an impression as if the government is not working. The only time I see her is when Napsa is opening shopping malls because at such activities she can wine and dine. It is a big shame!!!!

    • It all started with FTJ the trade union leader, since he became a politician unions have become a shall for launching would be top cadres.

  4. These are the investors who come to
Africa to exploit and make money.what
Can we do ?You can’t fight them. This
    Case will die slowly.

  5. Bowman is becoming likeable and ECL should really consider him as a running mate 2021. His education level may be low but he is a man who understands the important issues to be addressed.

  6. I say cheap politicking by lusambo, looking at worker grievances is easy.

The chunga dump site is none operational because of bull dozer breakdowns, kulima tower has constant floods, the sewage pipe leading from Olympia park is permanently Brocken with raw sewage pouring out,
Lusaka garbage around CBD and markets never seems to be clearing……..

those are problems you can fix…..not his cheap bullying

  7. A minister who specialises in catching late work reporting and probing worker abusers or catching police soliciting bribes. …….is that all lusambo can do ??

Kudos to him for trying…..but it would be nice honrable lusambo is you tackled more pertinent problems ……Chunga dump site is not operating fully because of broken down equipment , flooding in parts of Lusaka, ever pulling garbage in Lusaka…pleas try to fix more difficult problems.

    That would prove your worth.

  8. There’s also Oriental Quarries too.can you imagine we are still being owed salaries from last year September up to now?we were given K500 last week from 5months salary arreas.what will K500 kwacha do?we are crossborder truck drivers and we are suffering.if you ask the boss,he says your government is owing me money from road contraction.Mr Lusambo, may you PLEASE come to Oriental Quarries in Makeni too

    • Thanks to this Government we have been infiltrated by the Chinese who we all know do not care about Africans – their goal is to get rich by exploiting the poor !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. When we invite investors, let’s not tell them that a good reason to invest in Zambia is, cheap labour.

Our economy has grown and we need to target betterwork conditions and life improving employment. Unfortunately the previous message and promise of cheap labour has lead to investors thinking they can treat Zambian employees cheaply.

    • Let’s say, Zambian labour market is now at a premium, and is highly competitive. To get the best employees, investors must pay inflation busting wages. Employment rights are protected and there is no tolerance to breaches to employment rights.
