Ndola Mayor, His Worship, Amon Chisenga visits Zambian Breweries community projects in Ndola

The Ndola City Council (NCC) has given residents in the city a two-week ultimatum in which they should clean their surroundings including the drainages.

Ndola Mayor Amon Chisenga said the local authority will in two weeks’ time start house inspections to ensure that residents abide by the presidential directive of keeping their surroundings clean, green and healthy.

Mr. Chisenga said this when he presented a floating trophy to Grace Kayula of Northrise, whose house was voted the cleanest for this month.

He said it was disappointing that people resist cleaning surroundings especially outside their fences but instead wait for the local authority to do it for them.

Mr. Chisenga reiterated that the local authority will never clean people’s surroundings but will instead carry out house inspections.

And Yengwe ward councilor Arnold Mwamba, who is the initiator of the floating trophy, said the programme of recognising clean households is meant to encourage people to keep their premises well-kempt.

Mr. Mwamba said he will endeavor to keep his ward clean in line with the presidential directive.

Meanwhile, Grace Kayula, whose house emerged the cleanest in January and got the floating trophy, said the award has challenged her to work harder.

  1. That directive should also be directed at city council workers to keep public places clean, because if city council cannot clean its own areas, how can they direct others to do the same. By the way if i am supposed to keep a place clean can i also put a structure there and can i barricade it off from pedestrians and deprive them of walkways.

  2. At Kafue Boys this man was known as Amon Dube he was also a prefect in Lewanika house he later got expelled for wanting beat a white teacher. Was surprised his name changed from Amos Dube to Amos Chisenga

  3. While residents are responsible for keeping their private properties clean, the City Council is responsible for garbage collection and the cleaning of public places. You can’t transfer that responsibility to residents. Also make sure you provide garbage bins in public places. If you don’t, people will throw trash anyhow. And once you distribute trash bins throughout the city, MAKE SURE YOU COLLECT THE GARBAGE!!!!!! Mr. Mayor..are you listening? AGAIN:…..MAKE SURE THE CITY COUNCIL COLLECTS THE GARBAGE, ON TIME, and not once in a while!!!! Uncollected garbage is usually the biggest problem as far as sanitation is concerned. So prove that you’re serious Mr. Mayor by making sure you and your crew collect the garbage… on time! Also fine heavily people who litter. Make Ndola the…

  4. … cleanest city in Zambia, and we’ll consider voting for you as our next President…since Lungu is not doing anything.

  5. Let the President start clean his admin so that we can see the cleanness in his Government then he can tell zambians to clean their surroundings. His Government Filthy.

  6. And who gets to clean the cemetaries….. Deduct a certain percentage off my land rates and i will help clean up public areas near my property… No freebies here cost of living too high, thanks to the managers of our economy….

  7. It’s really a good thing ,my only worry is why do Zambian authorities wait for directives. Does this mean you don’t know your duties?

  8. A sh!tty council that does not have decent public toilets and look at that dump of rubbish at the bus station in the city centre. Lead by example you imb!cles.

  9. Well done Grace Kayula. It’s the duty of every citizen to create a healthy environment to thrive in. Our economy has not expanded enough to effectively provide rubbish collection regularly but we can identify sites to dump our rubbish safely for collection. Of course the council will join in to regularly collect it. We complain of youth unemployment, why not start a voluntary service of environmental monitoring, cleaning using local youths. In return the local authority can give them certificates and references to count towards employment references. A good citizen makes a good employee. Bring back National Service for youths but for community service rather than military and they can stay at home rather than nine camps.

    • Give them inducements like farmers donating vegetables, fruits weekly and excess mealie meal which is produced but has no market, can be used to provide one free sack a month. This type of reward will keep youths occupied. The government won’t have to spend too much to provide community service programmes as they did when we in 1976 were sent to camps for military service costing, food, uniforms, weapons etc.

Mobilise youths and let’s create an peer inclusiveness every youth taking part in life with duty. Even those young kids wandering around with no shoes with dusty feet can have play and life learning areas in the community.
