PF should Respect Journalists, HH weighs in on Prime TV and PF coverage feud

Share

UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has urged the Patriotic Front Party leadership to be respecting Journalists, human rights freedoms and liberties.

The UPND President says it is an abrogation of media freedom for the PF leadership to be attacking Journalists verbally and physically as was the case on Saturday when the PF Secretary General Davis Mwila verbally attacked and chased two Prime Television Journalists namely Njenje Chizu and Toliwe Chanda from covering the PF press briefing.

Mr. Hichilema has emphasised that Journalists must be respected by all citizens as their duty is to inform, educate and entertain the masses.

He says those aggrieved by tough questioning from Journalists must know how to respond as the media was only doing so on behalf of the citizens.

Mr. Hichilema said there is no need for any leader to abuse or indeed physically attack Journalists who are have continued to offer a service to the Nation under difficult times.

On Saturday before announcing the expulsion of Harry Kalaba from the Patriotic Front, Mr. Mwila in the company of the party Media Director Sunday Chanda, his Vice Antonio Mwanza, Labour Minister Joyce Simukoko and Fisheries and Livestock Minister Kampamba Chewe did attack Prime Television Journalists and ordered the private Media house to never cover the Patriotic Front Party events.

  1. Shame on you hh. Your party cadres always chase away znbc reporters. I hate people with double standards they are deadly.

    • Can we be fair with our comments guys. HH is right and has been consistent with his support for journalists across board. Zambia has no freedom of speech and/or expression. Shame on PF and LungWu

    • And yet this guy never uttered a word when Dora Siliya was verbally abused by his cadres at the funeral for the female student that he killed!

    • Zambia is heading the Zimbabwe way, it amazes me that people will oppose truth only because it is said by HH. Let us even suppose that UPND chases ZNBC journalists from its functions, does 2 wrongs make a right?

    • Hichilema doesn’t reflect deeply on anything he does or say. The UPND and the PF are the same no wonder they are butchering each other. There’s nothing that the PF does which the UPND hasn’t done, so it’s laughable that Hichilema can stand to condemn the other evil leaving his own. The UPND once declared The Post journalists as their number 1 enemy, they recently harassed ZNBC reporters among them Brian Mwale. In short, Hichilema ins’t as intelligent as his supporters project him. He’s just a very lucky kleptomaniac

    • @Iffy if HH promises to give Zambia media freedom we can vote for him. Let him promise to free ZNBC from the shackles of the ministry of information and broadcasting services. He must also promise to privatise Times and Daily mail
Why he can’t promall this is because once he gets into power he will, just like Lungu, want to surround himself with praise-singers and propagandists

    • Why he can’t promise all this is because once he gets into power he will, just like Lungu, want to surround himself with praise-singers and propagandists

  2. I’m not gonna be quick to side with HH on this one. These people speak one thing while in opposition but do exactly the same or worse once they ascend to power.

  3. Wherever the institutions of governance are weaker than some powerful individuals there’ll always be such abuses. PF secretary general Davis Mwila should be ashamed of himself.

    • The DA will write to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as part of its interventions to resolve the crisis in Zimbabwe.
DA leader Mmusi Maimane on Monday announced that the party would also formally approach the UN Commissioner on Human Rights requesting the intervention of its council in the crisis in accordance with its mandate to protect human rights.
“With the fall of the Mugabe regime, a sense of hope arose as change was promised by new President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mnangagwa committed to doing things differently, and Zimbabweans believed this was indeed possible. However, over a year after Mnangagwa took office, nothing has changed.
“The frustration and sense of betrayal saw Zimbabweans take to the streets and exercise their democratic right to protest…

… democratic right to protest joblessness, poverty, economic distress and exorbitant fuel increases. Unarmed civilians have been met by armed violence by government. And the crisis has now reached boiling point,” Maimane said.
Maimane said the DA would urgently request a joint meeting of parliament’s portfolio committees on home affairs, international relations and co-operation, police, and defence and military veterans to deliberate on the political and humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe.
The party also submitted an urgent motion to the national assembly speaker requesting that the house debate the impact of violence by the Zimbabwean government on South Africa.
“It is vital that parliament considers, debates and deliberates on this matter, and seeks collective solutions…

… seeks collective solutions in light of the president’s failure to act,” Maimane said.
He said despite concerted pressure from the DA, President Cyril Ramaphosa and his government had failed to show leadership and intervene in what had become a humanitarian crisis.
“To date, Ramaphosa has simply called for the end to sanctions against Zimbabwe. The president is mistaken to focus solely on the economic situation in Zimbabwe while turning a blind eye to the dictator-like military clampdown on citizens which has to date claimed the lives of at least 12 people.”
Maimane said it was vital that stability was restored in Zimbabwe and in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

  4. These politicians are all hypocrites. Right now HH prefers private media but when he gets into power(if at all he will) he will be preferring public media to cover him. As for Davies Mwila do not be so pompous with power today, because tomorrow you will need the same private media you are chasing away today

  5. But before we even talk about who chased who. How on earth can Davies Mwila be a secretary general of a party. That’s the starting point and that’s where the problem begins.

  6. Dear Davis, you cant chase Prime TV on account that they don’t cover you. The media will come to your functions and go back and weigh if your activities are news worthy, if not, they will not cover you. Assuming Prime TV came 1000 times and as usual and typical of your party which does not discuss real issues but just castigating opponents, as the case with one Sunday Chanda, then don’t expect the media to show your circus.

  7. This guy thinks that Zambians are dull and under fives, he should be the last person to talk about this issue. He brought all these confusions on the political scene when Andy Mazoka died.

  8. When you see Katuka and hh in front of cameras talking irrelevant issues, things are not well on the ground. In particular SESHEKE. While the PF is publishing images of their campaign in full swing, upnd is fighting ZP there and having press conferences in Lusaka talking rubbish. These guys are the real CHIMBWIS NO PLAN, pure CHIPANTE PANTE POLITICS.

  9. I think that if a certain media house goes to cover news on a certain party 1000 times without doing anything on those pieces of news, why should they continue wasting their precious resources to continuously attend such events when they know that the probability of getting news worth reporting is uncertainty. Don’t blame the SG for his emotions on this matter.

    • Its not the SG to decide which media outlets should cover or not cover events in our party, the PF. You must check his mandate, definitely this is not his. There are some of us in PF who are very conversant with the roles, responsibilities and KPIs in the party. We will never comment out of ignorance and promote dictatorship. NO

  10. On this one HH is right. journalist are there to cover events, thats their Job. However, in the same vein, I ask Journalists to be impartial in their reporting. Let them be professional in their Job.

  11. Don’t mix state owned media and private media. From 1964 to date how many opposition political parties have been elected into government and are using ZNBC? Why then entangle a state media into your dirt politics? Discuss reasonable issues, if private medias are biased let them know that being selfish is going to assist them at all. Also by chasing them does not solve any problems.

  12. Bad as that maybe, I would love to see HH apologize to all journalists that have been harassed or even assaulted by Upnd members. It’s no use trying to defend a professional attacked by one political party but fail to defend the same professional when attacked by your own party. PF don’t want Prime TV maybe because it distorts stories such as the government retiring 160 to.nga speaking teachers from one single school in national interest.

    • Sejani syndrome version 2

“Only a tonga grouping should be aired on Prime TV.”

      Pwahahahahaa kikikikikikijukijujujuhuhu kujakuja.

Failed efforts. It’s bad for business.

  13. HH is really an insensere man. To see that this man is Zambia’s main opposition leader really pains me not to mention the ones that are governing us. Zambia really needs a very deep cleansing in the political sphere.

    • Form your own political party and show us what you are able to offer, than pretending to ba champion behind your keyboard.

  14. Mr Mwila behaved very childishly when chasing away Prime TV journalists. Also, how can he complain about coverage when he gets 24/7 coverage from ZNBC. Davis Mwila for running mate 2021 and president 2026.

  15. The trouble is that we have a complete record of all what he has said and done since that fateful day of Sejani in 2006. And including all those things said and done in his name by Chieftainess Mukuni. Very impressive record of unguarded statements Imust say, of negatives of course and contradictions too. Not very good for a person who aspires to lead the country of One Zambia One Nation. The one that impresses me most is the in Chililabombwe in 2006 when “some advice and education” was given to miners’ wives during a campaign rally. Is he planning on standing again in 2021 Jay Gay?

    • UPND has proof that for them to be aired on state run dead NBC a tax funded media they had to write a letter for their party president to be featured on Sunday interview.

  16. Prime TV just got exposed. I wonder what people think of it now. Bad for business, yeah? Self inflicted wound unless double h keeps pumping in money.

  17. On 17th April 2016, The Daily Nation reported “THE United Party for National Development (UPND) leadership has fully endorsed the vulgar language, insults and threats of vindictiveness that its vice-president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has been spewing on citizens and institutions, Patriotic Front (PF) secretary general, Davis Chama has charged.”
So this HH thinks that Zambians are cheap and can easily be cheated hey, its very sad this man is a big hypocrite and liar to the extent that he is ready to kill just for a vote. Am equally surprised that even Kambwili, much as it hates him so much to be a former PF family member can now dine with this HH in availability of history. Support HH at your own peril.

  18. Why are still listening to this man who has no plan for Zambian but state house only. I blame the followers of UPND. Why can’t they identify a sensible leader with a vision to lead the party? The man is busy blaming PF while his candidate is waiting for support in Western province. A man without strategy. Expired politician, kuwayawayafye uyu musankwa HH.

  19. On a daily basis the IQ levels of PF supporters never ceases to amaze me…how low can you go?.. even on issues that dont require you to take sides.. this is a generation of cowards

  20. Why he can’t promise all this is because once he gets into power he will, just like Lungu, want to surround himself with praise-singers and propagandists
