The National Union for Communications Workers has urged Zampost Workers to go back to work following government’s commitment to help them collect the K20 million owed to them by partners which they can use to pay salaries.

Union General Secretary Richard Mulenga said government has also committed to help pay salaries at Zampost following a meeting held between the Union and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communications Engineer Misheck Lungu.

In an Interview, Mr. Mulenga however disclosed that Zampost workers in other provinces have gone back to work with Lusaka being the only province where the sit in protest has continued.

He said there is no need to continue with the protests especially as government has committed to help settle the six months’ salary arrears.

Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba recently said he is engaging the Ministry of Finance over the release of 50 million Kwacha to recapitalise Zampost.

Dr. Mushimba said that government wants to also help Zampost to collect 20 million Kwacha that it is owed.

He told ZNBC News in Lusaka that the recent go slow by workers at Zampost and TAZARA is retrogressive and explained that Ministry of Transport Permanent Secretary Misheck Lungu has been to both institutions to engage managements over the go slow.

Last week, the strike action by Zambia Postal Services Corporation workers entered the second month with no signs of them returning to work.

  1. Zampost yanyoko?? Yatinyokola njala and you expect us to work? Pay us first and give us at least one more day so we sort out our Landlords, School fees, buy meali meal and electricity as we have been living in the dark.

    • This is taking people for granted how do you expect people you haven’t paid for six months to pay for transport pay for fuel pay for food?
Where do you expect them to find money? On trees?
This are human beings whose lives you have messed up.
Pay them first and then say to them you have money in your pockets come to work!
This is a big lesson to all Zambians with a short memory these are those ninety days people! The ones who said money in your pockets well come 2021 check your pockets again!

    • Useless Unionists. Today you can speak not on a point of anonymity. Speaking on the point of anonymity is weakness of the highest order.
I am a worried man. When I hear that Government will be helping you recover money you are owed makes me a very sad man.
Have you Zampost really failed to to work?
Mushimba, before you release that money, the K50 million recapitalisation bailout, let Zampost formulate viable business ventures. Let them plan to fund viable projects and don’t make them use that money for future salaries too. Its high time people got serious with public funds.

    • “Commitment” is just a word and had it been “government has taken action” that would be more assurance to the affected rather suffering families. One tends to miss the era of when unions really were unions representing workers interests! Electing FTJ Chiluba to the presidency and then he went about giving political appointments to trade unionists in a way was the beginning of killing the versatility of unions!

  2. If the Zampost project fails after recapitalisation, audit the parastatal, jail those found wanting and sell Zampost. You will have failed to run it.
Parastatals should be paying dividends to Government not the other way round. And you can’t keep recapitalising failing entities. It’s unbusinesslike. You hear me?
Perhaps we should start judging Governments by the performance of these money sucking entities.

  3. The other day the minister of sports was attacking some ex coach for demanding his. Now we have this moron of a union leader asking workers to go back to work because there is some “commitment “ from the government. How are the working going to get to work if they have no money? You guys have no shame. You are too full to see that other people are suffering.

  4. Zampost workers learn to make your own money. If you are not making any profits shut it down period. Go back to the land. Why shud tax money be paid on companies which are not making any profit

    • @Hurry. I disagree. The postal service is like the police service, it’s not profit oriented but service oriented. To make it profit oriented govt would have to privatize it or even better list it. Our Zambian govts (past and present) have never been good at making investment grade decisions.
