South African Saray Khumalo has reached the highest point on the planet becoming the first black African woman to scale Mount Everest, eNCA has reported.

The business executive reportedly reached the summit in the early hours of Thursday. This was her fourth attempt at climbing Mount Everest.

In a previous attempt in May 2017, Khumalo had to be rescued from Mount Everest by helicopter. She had been injured during inclement weather while trying to reach the summit, Netwerk24 reported. Her previous attempts had been scuppered by an earthquake in Nepal and an avalanche.

Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain at its official elevation of 8 848m above sea level.

Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay were the first people to reach the mountain’s summit on May 29, 1953.

Since then, around 800 people attempted to climb Mount Everest annually. More than 296 people have died trying to climb it.

Born in Zambia, with a Rwandan bloodline and now a South African, she has achieved her goal of becoming the first black woman from Africa to summit Mount Everest.

In 2012, Saray summited Mount Kilimanjaro and in the process, raised funds for the Lunchbox Fund. The mountaineering passion took hold and she embarked on a journey to climb the highest peak on each continent, not for herself but the education of African children. She summited Mount Elbrus in 2014 and Mount Aconcagua in 2015.

She became a Nelson Mandela Libraries ambassador and raised nearly R1m for school libraries. After being on Everest during both the Serac fall (2014) and the earthquake (2015), she reached the south summit in 2017.

Through pure perseverance, grit and courage she decided to return to Mount Everest in 2019. During this expedition, she supports the Dr Thandi Ndlovu Foundation.

  1. Very funny… as we were discussing, ati shani morning ikonomi? We want a better Zambia, we don’t care who pulls it up from which region they come from! But ECL nakwata amalyashi lyapamatak00 regarding the economy.

    • 1. Photoshop, she can’t survive 2 minutes without jacket at Everest.
      2. She is South African and African, she is NOT Zambian.
Don’t waste your time, go make money or love.

    • What annoys me is the tendency of the west claiming they were the first to do this or that.

Who discovered Victoria Falls? The westerners will say “David Livingstone”.

But David Livingstone found natives already living there.

      So so annoying.

But not nearly as annoying as Lungu and PF thieves.

    • Nostra: “Go make money?” But that’s exactly what she’s been doing. She raised nearly R1m for school libraries it says. There’s no greater joy or fulfillment than doing something you love and money just comes out of it. I also don’t understand what drives people to scale extreme heights but hey, if it’s their passion then I respect that. Live and let live..

    • @Ba Chale, no no no man, am not talking off that Khumalo, she is great!! And I wish she was Zambian, these lazies want to claim her. Unfortunately she not Zambian, and am telling these Zambian WOMEN to focus on making money in a noble way. If they can’t then they should focus on what they are good at LOVE-making.

    • This is Neil Armstrong et al landing on the moon. It is fake. Probably designed to ramp up support for her charity…

And the “Zambian born” thing should have probably remained in the detail…not the headline. Zambia we make ourselves look foolish and mungulu mungulu. Ever since we won the AFCON we have been mediocte in every department. We can fo well to fake an authentic Zambian girl flying solo around the world. Or living on Antarctica for 3 months.

      Try.

  2. You are not even ashamed including Zambia in such folly …she is happy to fly SA flag why even give her space in fact so many people climb that mountain …stop it!!

    • @Jay Jay, Zambians like to take credit for things they have not done.

They will take credit even for useless things like what this Rwandanese woman has just done.

Climbing Everest is not an achievement I would scream about.

    • Born in Zambia, with a Rwandan bloodline and now a South African…imagine how does that make her Zambian? She didnt even fly her parents flag….anyone can climb Everest you just need to acclimatize with the height.

    • LOL… Gay Jay… you are segregating African now. your colonisers just put lines there to segregate you. You are in the forefront pulling the segregation toll.

See why the call you bustardddd???

    • I have googled her name and on all articles there is nothing stating she was born in Zambia…she proudly states she is South African Financial Exec….LT you should be ashamed for posting this nonsensical.

    • @IndigoTyrol,
You are right, I find this article, especially the headline, trying, by all means, to take on some credit for Zambia.
      Sangwapo mune mentality.
She is South African period. I wouldn’t mind if it LT pride for her being an African.

  3. Gents what LT has written here are bare facts about Khumalo. Nothing else. Born in Zambia(probably due to circumstances) from Ruwadese blood and has choose to be South African herself. There is nothing like wanting to make her be Zambian. What I believe has been noted to us all is that she is an African Woman. Similarly modern books have stopped saying that Victoria Falls was discovered by David Livingstone, but they write as the first white man to see the falls. The myth has long gone been corrected.

  4. You cant be on top of mount everest in office attire. Thats a fake picture. That place is -20 degrees cold

  5. People, people people – please focus on her achievement. Congratulations young lady for not giving up until you achieved your goal. Too many commentators who have never achieved anything significant tend to focus on finding fault with those who have achieved success. You don’t go up by putting someone down. Just be neutral if you have nothing positive to say.

  6. Too much concoction of Jealous, greedy and being content to be ignorant is extremely dangerous.

Mountain climbing is big sport and those who love the sport find it as exciting as watching man uyu loosing batha walking alone

  7. This is like Neil Armstrong et al landing on the moon.

    Try.
