President Edgar Lungu says Zambia has a lot to learn from Botswana how that country transfers power after an election without tension.
President Lungu says Botswana has been able to conduct a smooth handover of power from one leader to another since Independence, which he says is commendable.
He also says it is not healthy that the country should experience political tension after elections.
Speaking to ZNBC News in an interview in Gaborone today President Lungu urged parliamentarians to learn from Botswana’s experience and come up with a constitution that reduces tension and ensures an orderly handover of power.
He said all MPs should debate the Constitution bill number 10 which is in parliament with the interests of the nation at heart.
President Lungu who was in Gaborone to witness the swearing-in ceremony of President Mokgweetsi Masisi after his re-election wondered why some MPs shun their responsibility to their electorate and the nation by boycotting parliamentary sessions.
He said it is sad that a certain grouping of Parliamentarians abscond parliament just because they have been instructed to do so by their political leaders.
And President Lungu says the country must avoid the 2016 scenario where the announcement of election results was delayed.
He observed that such a scenario caused panic among citizens.

The focus should be on how the elections themselves are handled…there will be no tensions if the elections are free and fair as is the case in Botswana. The fact that he is taking about the period after elections makes me believe the actual result is already a foregone conclusion…
Thank you your excellency for the good observations. You at least followed my advice to observe and then sit next to Mnangagwa. Sir, the only way to have free and fair elections is to allow the opposition to campaign without restrictions and to get rid of pf cadres from the ECZ. Seriously consider taking stern disciplinary action on your cadres, Did you hear what they disturbance and destruction they did in Chongwe over the weekend? Were you aware of their actions?They are making you really unpopular.

His words and actions for some reason always run parallel I wonder why. Lungu carries a lot of deadweight in terms of his ministers but yet never does anything to relieve himself of that unwanted weight. He does the running exercises but for some reason never really learns of how the experience talks to him about his toxic government. He knows what do to get rid of toxic stuff in his body so he could stay healthy but still runs a very toxic government. Cut off them that pull you back or weigh you down.

Why does he have this poor, irritating and unhelpful habit of making important pronouncements about his country from foreign lands? Surely he could make such important statements via a press conference at state house where he could answer any questions that citizens have. Because he does not do so, we have a proliferation of “fake” news which should actually be called “guess news” foethat is what it is: starve the people of news and they will guess what is happening and opposition will feed on that.

Look who is talking… does he even mean what he says? If only he can stop rigging and stealing elections then we will definitely have learned from Botswana. And if only he could stop the corruption that has made him and his minions filthy rich then we would have learned from Botswana. Botswana is a beacon of democracy not only in Africa but the entire world and they have the best performing economy in Africa… it’s simple: their leaders truly, without question, serve the interests of the country and their people. They don’t go into politics to enrich themselves. They respect the will of the people, hence they never steal elections and undermine govt institutions.
