Zesco United’s winless Group A run in the 2019/20 CAF Champions League continued on Friday night after losing away at Zamalek away in Egypt.

Zamalek beat Zesco 1-0 in Cairo to severely dent George Lwandamina’s side quarterfinal hopes.

Achraf Bencharki put Zamalek ahead in the 4th to see the five-time champions’ take a 1-0 halftime lead.

Mostafa Mohamed returned to haunt Zesco for a second straight match with the final goal in the 89th.

Mohamed scored the opener in the first leg on December 28 in Ndola in the 72nd minute before Qadri Kola equalized for Zesco ten minutes later.

With two games left to save their souls in Group A, Zesco stay on 2 points from four games, slumping from third to last in Group A.

Zamalek stay second on goal difference tied on 7 points tied with leaders TP Mazembe’s who host Premiero de Agosto of Angola this Saturday in Lubumbashi.

Agosto, who visit Zesco on January 25 in the latter’s final home match and penultimate Group A fixture, have 2 points heading into their weekend trip to DR Congo.

  1. Zambian league goes with nation’s mood. 2019 -2021 Zambia is experiencing sorrows, sad, hungry, etc etc. All teams which did good in 2017-2018 like:
Zesco, Zanaco, Power Dynamos, Nkana and Green Eagles all are doing very BAD this year. Imagine Zesco and Zanaco failing even to send 3 players to national team. Look at coaches: Chambeshi gone, Numba gone and more are going!!
If Zambia National Team was called to camp this month, it would be very very difficult to list 15 players.

  2. Yes good question. I think either the first goal in 4th minute or the second one in 89th minute was disallowed to leave the score at 1-0 as reported by LT…..hehehehe

  3. It was 2-0, effectively ending George Lwandamina & Co’s interest in the competition.
TP Masembe look on course to hammer Primeiro de Agosto in Lubumbashi this afternoon to qualify to next round, Zesco need to reboot their team urgently…

  4. Zesco must stop playing football with the assistance of officials. Zesco is the most favoured team in the FAZ league and now we’re seeing the consequences. Last time Zesco’s games were rescheduled while Nkana were denied that request and were made to play 3 games in seven days to catch up on their delayed matches. The result was that the team got fatigued. It had to take complaints from some clubs for FAZ to agree that league closing games be played on the same day and at the same time because it was a photo finish but even then we witnessed very poor refereeing in favour of Zesco. There are reports that Lwandamina sometimes refuses certain officials to officiate Zesco league games. This applies to Zanaco as well. It’s unfortunate that Green Eagles, Nkana and Buffaloes didn’t go far…
