Legal aid desk to enhance transparency-Kanganja

Share

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja says the establishment of the legal aid desk at Choma Central Police Station will help victims of crimes have access to legal aid services.

Mr Kanganja said the legal aid desk will enhance transparency, accountability and protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of people in line with the tenets of democracy.

He added that the development will help in providing checks and balances among the law enforcers.

Mr Kanganja said this during the signing ceremony of the MOU between the Zambia Police Service, the Legal Aid Board and the Legal Resources Foundation on the establishment of a legal aid desk at Choma Central Police station.

He commended the European Union and the Federal Republic of Germany for the support they have continued to render to government in the delivery of justice.

Mr Kanganja has since appealed to the EU and the German government to replicate the programme of setting up legal aid services in other provinces.

And speaking earlier at the same event, The Head of Cooperation European Union Delegation to Zambia and COMESA Gianluca Azzoni described the establishment of the legal aid desk as a milestone in the cooperation between the EU and the Zambian government.

Mr Azzoni said he was pleased to note that the number of paralegal desks in correctional facilities has have increased.

  2. How dare he talk about justice when he doesn’t even know what justice is? ZP has fails to take any sort responsibility about offences police officers make when discharging their duties.
Justice is not about having a legal aid desk at Central Police.
Justice is taking responsibility and being accountable to the offences officers make. Justice is about fair mindedness when it comes to applying the law. Justice is about acknowledging and accepting individuals fall victim to police brutality, and assuring them that offenders will always get punished. Justice is preventing abuse of law. Justice is not torture of suspects. Justice is not shooting unarmed suspect and pretending thinking okay since politicians are saying it’s okay. Justice is about making sure every suspect is charged and…

Justice is about making sure every suspect is charged and gets to have their day in court. Justice is equality before the law.
As citizens, since all the above are hard to implement all we need from the IG and Police service in general are assurances time and again in practice that past incidents of police officer misconduct, case and suspect mismanagement will never repeat.

  4. I have seen victims of crime being locked up over a weekend by Zp when they went to the police station to report a theft.
A Zambian police station is the last place any one would be looking for justice.

  5. To this moron Kanganja justice is Guilt till proven Innocent by whatever means even if it means beating a suspect to a pulp as a guilty person always talks according to him. How many people are in his cells due for these gassing cases? Its more than 48 hours no court appearance … they have been in there for more than 2 weeks.
