Following the submissions by the Zambia Centre for Inter-Party Dialogue (ZCID), the United Party for National Development (UPND) and other Stakeholders, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has decided to reduce the proposed nomination fees for the 2021 General Elections that are scheduled to be held on 12th August 2021.
In a statement released to the media this morning and signed by the Commission Public Relations Manager, Margaret Chimanse, ECZ said that, in considering the adjustment to the proposed nomination fees, the Commission took into account all the stakeholders submissions and concerns, as well as other factors such as inflation, increased cost of conducting nominations and polls, including the issuance of the free Voter Registers to all Presidential candidates which cost K610,000.00 per candidate.
“The Commission, therefore, wishes to thank all Political Parties and Stakeholders for the cordial engagement and submissions regarding the proposed nomination fees,” concluded the statement adding that Political parties and aspiring candidates shall be required to pay the nomination fees four weeks before the nomination date to allow effective and efficient processing of the nominations.

Slowly the poor are being sidelined from political leadership. They started with the Grade 12 certificate and followed it up with the reduction of duty on beer so that children of the poor can drink their minds and future. Now they’ve increased fees so that the poor again won’t have chance to get into leadership. If the son of a poor Bemba gets promoted it means he’s the supervisor of fellow idioots at Mulima Chipuba. This is what the PF has brought. The Legal Affairs Minister’s children are all abroad for school. Malole and Munali are no longer a schools of first choice. Alexander Grey Zulu didn’t go to prison when he fought colonialists to come and see this systematic segregation. The PF are worse than the Colonial Government. At least at Independence 95% of land was in the hands…

Whether the nomination is free or a million dollars, the pf will win. The opposition trivalised this issue, so now that it is gone their way, we hope they will not have any excuses when they lose. We are glad ecz has done this so that opposition have no silly excuses when those results are out in 2021 and as expected pf win. We don’t want crying like a hungry cow and running to courts with petitions.

The best criteria for candidates to meet is not how high or low the nomination fee paid is. It’s like saying the higher the bride price, the longer the marriage will last.
If we put money first, one we will end up having a rebel-funded candidate and pay with our lives.
Wise consideration is GRZ should fully fund ECZ operations to avoid disadvantaging any citizen through high fees from exercising their Democratic Right. Secondly, those vying for public office must demonstrate how many people they have personally employed. For presidential, the minimum number one must employ should be at least 1,000! Past performance is best predictor for future performance, not ability to pay nomination fee!
