Share

Government has released one million Kwacha towards the relocation of households affected by floods in Chawama and Kanyama compounds of Lusaka District.

Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit-DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe disclosed this when he undertook an on the spot check of the flooded communities of Chawama compound.

Mr Kabwe who described the situation as desperate said Government has seen the need to relocate the people until the problem is resolved.

“The identified households will either be rented more habitable houses or be moved into a transitory camp for the next three months, to ensure their lives and property are protected” Mr Kabwe noted.

He added that DMMU in collaboration with various stakeholders has been working tirelessly to ensure the situation is resolved within the quickest possible time.

Mr Kabwe further said that the DMMU has engaged the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to work on the drainage system as a permanent solution to the flood problem in the area. He however noted that Government is implementing short term response measures such as pumping out water, disinfecting the areas and providing water and food requirements to the affected households.

Mr Kabwe also advised members of the public to avoid settling in flood prone areas to avoid such calamities as the rains would be getting intense owing to the issues of climate change and variability.

Mr Kabwe furthermore disclosed that this year, the country has experienced more intense rainfall activities which has resulted in a number of displacements and damage to infrastructure.

He added that a number of dams have also been affected due to heavy rains leading to bursting of walls as was the case in Mumbwa and Chibombo districts.

He has since called on the affected communities to remain calm and cooperate with government in resolving the problem as disaster management is everyone’s responsibility.

  1. Floods wrought by overcrowding in the slum areas due to the economic hardships engineered by Lungu’s + PF’s disastrous policies.

  2. Shameful indeed. I dont think such lives exist elsewhere in Africa where people just build anyhow. Thanks to cadres who just allocate land anywhere without thinking of consequences that will befall customers. Its time we tamed the cadres. They have destroyed this country and they need to be caged. How does one build in a pond or swamp and the council is there to just watch and enjoy the videos.

  3. ONE MILLION KWACHA? Who calculated this? How did they come up with the figure? This is buttering people. Six years in power and you come up with K1 million at the last minute before elections. Dr Guy Scott while in opposition mocked the MMD government about Lusaka floods, and that was 11 years ago! Everyone knows that when there is El Nino, Lusaka floods but you have a playboy for mayor and jokers for central government who cannot see beyond 17:00 today.

  4. The luxury jet does not fit into these pictures. Where is the shame? How can you go round the country prancing with one time gifts for votes bought with the money (that belongs to Zambians) while the the same Zambians you are serving are living in filth and abject poverty?!? More than 40% of Zambians live below the poverty line.

  6. Since 1972 things have never changed in these areas, I don’t know why no one has ever solved this problem of floods but floods are a problem all over the world it is not only in those areas affected a lone but even cities like Rome to just one there were floods last year so floods is a natural phenomenal all over this world.
However please keep these victims warm and healthy

  7. SINCE 1972 ………. ???????????????????????????
    I HEAR SINCE 1964
SURELY PEOPLE MUST REALISE THERE CAN BE A BETTER ZAMBIA ??
MOST POLITICANS ARE PATHOLOGICAL LIARS WHEN ARE WE GOING TO UNDERSTAND THIS
THE BRAINS ARE RIGHT HERE IN ZAMBIA BUT THEY DONT WANT TO INVOLVE THEMSELVES INN DIRTY POLITICS

  8. @nshilimubemba,
Ask yourself, if you were to go to the very ROME you are referring to will you be able to see any sign of floods that you saw?
Furthermore you are confusing “constant floods” year in year out with “one in time” type of floods. When there is a flood in Rome they take precautions either to prevent or reduce the impact of floods if they were to happen in future.
But the Chawama and Kanyama compounds case, its almost every year, same story. No precautions taken. That is the difference, so please stop, defending the undefendable we mwana wesu.
