USA urged to stay out of Zambia’s LGBTQ issues

Share

The President of the Socialist Party of Zambia, Fred M’membe, has called on the United States to stay away from LGBTQ issues in Zambia. According to M’membe, the Western nations’ promotion of same-sex relationships in the country is a threat to Zambia’s traditional values and beliefs.

Speaking at a press conference in Lusaka, M’membe said that homosexuality has no place in Zambia, and that same-sex relations are unacceptable. He added that Zambians have their own beliefs, traditions, and customs, laws, and practices, and should be allowed to decide what to keep and what to change.

“There’s no need for the West to encourage same-sex relationships in Zambia. In African traditions, sex matters, in general, are not dealt with in this way. We are obligated to protect our children from degradation and degeneracy. If we are not careful, this will pervert the family and national identity,” M’membe said.

M’membe also accused the West of pushing a gay agenda in Zambia and urged Zambians to take responsibility for protecting their country’s traditional values. He warned that if they fail to do so, they risk losing themselves.

“We don’t agree with many of their laws, political practices, or even traditions, but we have left that for the American people to decide how they govern themselves and their country,” he said.

M’membe’s comments come amid growing concern among Zambian officials about the promotion of LGBTQ rights in the country. Last year, Zambia’s President, Edgar Lungu, signed a law that criminalized homosexuality, with penalties of up to 15 years in prison.

The United States and other Western nations have been criticized by some Zambian officials for their support of LGBTQ rights. In 2019, the US Ambassador to Zambia, Daniel Foote, was recalled after he criticized the country’s laws criminalizing homosexuality.

M’membe’s comments are likely to be welcomed by conservative groups in Zambia, who have long campaigned against LGBTQ rights. However, they are likely to draw criticism from human rights groups, who argue that Zambia’s laws criminalizing homosexuality are a violation of basic human rights.

  3. All other African countries are waking up to this new wave of destruction on Africa by the US and it’s partners apart from our President. This is proof that our elections were tampered with and this president is fulfilling the agenda put before him by his masters. Our concern is that he is not intelligent enough to read between the lines. He is focused on success which will never ever come to fruition because he does not understand the thinking of a Muzungu.

  4. So Mmembe acknowledges that we have gay people in Zambia including himself. He targets his fight on USA to stay out of the gay issues in Zambia.. What bigotry is this ? This so called socialist opposition leader is trying to attract all enemies of USA to fund and support his intended dictatorship in Zambia. He intends to start killing all suspected gay people in Zambia and suppress all freedoms and rights of people in Zambia. Stupid *****!

  5. USA HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOMOSEXUALITY IN ZAMBIA. MEMBE SHOULD INSTEAD BLAME THE PF FOR HAVING ALLOWED CORRUPTION TO GROW EXTENSIVELY OVER THE 10 YEARS IT WAS IN POWER. PEOPLE WITH CORRUPTED MINDS CAN DO ANYTHING. EVEN THE SO CALLED HOMOSEXUAL GROUPS, ARE NOT ACTUALLY HOMOSEXUALS. THEY ARE JUST CORRUPTLY ORGANISED AND SPONSORED/FINANCED TO DISPLAY ALL SORTS OF ACTS THAT ARE CONTRARY TO CHRISTIAN AND NATIONAL VALUES OF ZAMBIA BY A CARTEL IN PF THAT HAS A PLANNED SYNDICATE TO RAISE FALSE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST HH IN ORDER TO MANIPULATE THE GENERAL PUBLIC WITH A THEME, “ALEBWELELAPO SORI”

  6. It’s good that you have taken a position on this matter. Now we’re waiting for your former ally in the Rainbow Party that is now under the style of Economic Front Bwana Wynter Kabimba to avail us his finger. Wynter! Don’t hide, please come out we’re waiting to exact the promised digit

  7. Who needs Americans to keep your country in the stone age when you can do it yourself? Even Cuba has left us behind

  8. Why is LT not allowing my comments on this issue?? I repeat this Mmembe is acknowledging that there are gay people in Zambia and he is one of them. Meanwhile he redirects his anger to USA urging USA to stay out of the gay issue. Mmembe is trying to project himself as an opposition party in USA.. What a waste of time by Mmembe.

  9. Members should tell us the political ideology his party intends to bring to Zambia. Should our presidents rule us like Putin does, being very corrupt himself and living in golden luxury? And ruling Russia for as long as he lives? We rejected such ideology in 1991. If the USA is meddling in other countries politics that he mentioned like Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan, then Zambia had also meddled with ANC in South Africa, with SWAPO in Namibia and ZANU in Zimbabwe (Just to mention a few). And Dr Kaunda worked with the USA to bring the peace we now enjoy in Southern Africa.
