Zambia on Saturday kickoff their 2017 Africa Cup qualifying campaign with a home Group E match against Guinea Bissau at Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola.

This is the debut meeting between Chipolopolo and Guinea Bissau.

The 2012 African champions are favourites over the West African side that has never qualified to the Nation Cup.

Zambia face Guinea Bissau just five days after replacing coach Honour Janza with George Lwandamina who has taken over the job as acting trainer.

Lwandamina is positive that Zambia will launch the qualifying campaign with a positive result in Ndola.
“We have tried to psyche players and believe that they can deliver in the same way they used to do because it is not a team that has changed much because it is a team that has been playing well which played better football and for that, they have to start believing in themselves and deliver for zambia,” Lwandamina said.

Zambia are missing key defender Stoppila Sunzu and striker Evans Kangwa who are nursing injuries.

“Definately those are good players like any other player in the team. But the replacements will always be there. we may not see exactly what we usually expect from Sunzu and Evans but we have cover.”

Guinea Bissau are arriving in Zambia in Friday afternoon- hours before the match.

Meanwhile, Congo-Brazzaville host Kenya in the other Group E opener on Sunday in Brazzaville.

Nevers Mumba complains to the Police over harassment, as he denies looking for a job in PF

Dr Nevers Mumba
Dr Nevers Mumba

MMD President Nevers Mumba has complained to the police of continued harassment and attacks from some MMD members opposed to his leadership.

Dr Mumba said in an interview that the case of his continued attacks on him and the MMD secretariat staff by unruly members had been handed over to the police and arrests were being expected.

He said whenever the party wanted to mobilize itself, some known expelled senior members sent unruly youths to destabilize meetings and attack Secretariat staff.

“We are being destabilized and they are weakening the party,” he said.

Dr Mumba said the court ruling was clear that the MMD under him should be left to operate freely.

He said some disgruntled MMD members wanted to use the youths to destabilize his leadership so they say he had failed to lead the party.

Asked to comment on reports that the MMD was headed for extinction under his leadership, Dr Mumba said “It’s a fallacy, I haven’t failed. There are people who want to use youths to undermine our Constitution.”

He said under his leadership, MMD had survived the biggest fights and the party would not have survived the battle had it not been for his spiritual standing.

“Now we have fought a good fight and defended the party with limited resources. We will continue to succeed,” he said.

On calls for him to immediately call for a convention, Dr Mumba said he had a five year mandate to run the MMD during which time he would uphold the party Constitution.

“Those calling for a convention should know that it doesn’t work like that. I have a five year mandate and I don’t understand why people are in a hurry to call for a convention,” he said.

On members calling for Dr Mumba’s resignation, he said it was not for them to say they did not want him.

“I was voted for by the grassroots. Those are just innocent street people that they are using to destabilize the party. Just because I am a Pastor people think they can destabilize the party. There is no back door entry,” he said.

Dr Mumba said he would uphold the Constitution and MMD would remain a democratic party under his leadership.

The MMD had since started mobilizing itself and within a few days, the party would hold a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
He dismissed allegations that he was seeking an ambassadorial job from the PF Government.

“I never joined politics for a Job. I am in this to serve the Zambian people. Am on a mission to change the face of Zambian politics and assist develop the country. Am not satisfied until my country sees a
better day,” he said.
Meanwhile three people have been arrested in connection with the harassment of MMD President Nevers Mumba and MMD secretariat staff.

Lusaka province police chief Charity Katanga said police received the reports from Dr Mumba on Wednesday and yesterday.

Ms Katanga said that before Dr Mumba reported the case on Wednesday, some youths went to the police to get a permit that the MMD president would be addressing them at the MMD secretariat when it was in fact not true.

The three suspects are being held at Woodlands police station and police are investigating the matter further.

She warned that police would not allow the harassment of Dr Mumba and the MMD staff and police would handle the matter to its logical conclusion.

President Lungu should communicate his long term plan – British High Commissioner to Zambia

Outgoing British High Commissioner to Zambia James Thornton has called on President Edgar Lungu to communicate his long term plan for the country’s socio economic development.

Mr Thornton said Lungu’s short term commitment to poverty eradication has not yet born any fruits.

“President Lungu has not yet clearly communicated his long term plan for the country’s socio-economic development. His short term commitment to poverty eradication has not yet born any fruits. His Governments huge appetite for borrowing also disadvantaged the country in the long term,” he said.

Mr Thornton was speaking yesterday on Joy FM’s the Platform Program where he commented on a number of issues including the Barotseland agreement.

On Barotseland
Kenneth Kaunda abrogated the Barotseland agreement and this is why the people of that area feel less Zambian. An independent Barotseland is not economically viable; Zambia needs to continue being a unitary state.

Mr Thornton said Kenneth Kaunda had the face or image of a dictator who destroyed a once vibrant country’s economy and overstayed in power for almost the same period as Mandela was in prison. He said Kaunda was reluctant to leave power but Mandela on the other hand was so quick to leave power that he acquired almost a sainthood image. He added that whatever Kaunda accomplished was taken away by his other failures; hence he could not be viewed in the same way the West view Mandela.

On the late Michael Sata

“Well, Michael Sata was quite a character, he was a strong figure that changed Zambia’s politics for the opposition. However, his presidency was marred by threats on the opposition, bullying diplomats and so on. I remember Mr. Sata phoning me directly complaining as to why I was meeting opposition members. Some of his accusations were true but most of them were false. I blatantly told him I would continue doing my job and reminded him how we used to meet him when he was in the opposition. But I still feel relations between UK and Zambia would have continued because Sata respected the Queen of England. Otherwise he was quite a character.”

Relationship between Zambians and their President

“Time has come for Zambians to stop looking at their Presidents the way subjects look at their chiefs. They are citizens and a President a Chief servant of theirs. Criticising a President could be formal or it can take a less formal path which includes satire or parody if you may like. It is one thing to be respectful but another to say things as they are. Zambians must allow others to express their views on a matter, the way they feel like, the way they see things. That is the only way Zambia’s Democracy would grow.”

On the media
“I hope to see ZNBC running professionally like the BBC. Currently it is not serving the nation the way it is supposed to. It does not also make sense for Government to own two Newspapers. On the other hand it is good to see media diversify in the private sector. I am happy to see the Zambian Watchdog and Zambia Reports have many likes on Facebook. It is also good to see most privately owned Radio Stations give platforms to Zambia’s divergent voices.”

Let’s eat more Kapata, Chibwabwa, Kalembula and Impwa -CSO-SUN

Zambians should take pride and start consuming more indigenous vegetables and fruits to improve their nutrition status, a nutritionist has advised.

Nelly Phiri, the Nutrition Program Officer at the Zambia Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition Alliance said local vegetables such as Chibwabwa, Impwa and Kalembula have more nutrition value than most western foods.

Zambia is one of the most malnourished countries in the world with close to 40 percent of children under five years stunted while a growing adult population is obese.

[pullquote]Years ago, we never used to hear of malnutrition because we used to grow our own vegetables in the backyard[/pullquote]
Ms. Phiri said consuming local vegetables and fruits is cheaper and beneficial for households with low incomes.

‘Most of these vegetables and fruits contain vitamins like A,D, A, K which are fat soluble vitamins and B Complex which are water soluble vitamins and these can be gotten from our local fruits such as Baobab fruit which is locally known as Masau including the Masau which also have other mineral elements which people can benefit from,’ Ms Phiri said.

Ms Phiri added that the indigenous vegetables and fruits are mostly organic and are not grown using artificial fertilizers.

‘Most of these vegetables are wild vegetables like Kapata and Kalembula and we don’t need any fertilizer,’ she said.

She added, ‘Let’s take pride in what we have as Zambians and make use of that. Most people think if you want vegetable you have to go to Spar, Pick N Pay. Years ago, we never used to hear of malnutrition because we used to grow our own vegetables in the backyard and they were grown without fertilizer which enhanced nutrient absorption,’

Influential African businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu says the time has come for African entrepreneurs to conquer the world by creating large multinational corporations.

Mr Elumelu who is Chairman of United Bank for Africa and Founder the Tony Elumelu Foundation said African SMEs should strive to become future multinational corporations.

Mr Elumelu plan is to create 10,000 African-owned businesses, generating 1,000,000 new jobs and contributing $10 billion to revenues across Africa over the next 10 years.

Rozalla Miller is back on the Billboard charts

rozalla

Zambian born Rozalla Miller , mostly know for her 1991 hit “Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)”, which has been remixed and re-issued several times , is back on the Billboard charts with her song “If You Say It Again.”  The song has peaked at number 5 on the Dance Club Songs chart and is currently at number 8.

An article in Billboard by Gordon Murray reads: “Bookending the top 10, Rozalla roars 18-10 with If You Say It Again. It’s her first Dance Club Songs top 10 in 21 years, dating to her third No. 1 I Love Music in 1994.
“Rozalla, who arrived with the 1992 No. 1 Every body’s Free (To Feel Good), tells Billboard Again, ‘I wrote it as an affirmation of love. To be honest, I was inspired by the wonderful relationship I have with my husband, but I felt so many people could relate to these lyrics. We need more positive songs about love these days!’
“Regarding her new chart rank, she adds, ‘I’m beyond thrilled to be back in the top 10: it has been a renewed dream and goal and I am so thankful to all the DJs who have been incredibly supportive of the song.
“Again, Rozalla says, ‘took on a second wind when my pals from the UK, Love to Infinity, who had worked with me on some of my previous hits, were gracious enough to want to be a part of the remix package.’ (In addition to the Love to Infinity mixes, interpretations have arrived from Ricardo Autobahn, Ranny and Stormby, among others.)
“It’s been so many years since I was in the charts, and, for me, Billboard has always been the godfather of music magazines.”

Everybodys Free (Feel good)

If you say it again

Rozalla-Miller-Everybody-is-Free

She was born on March 18, 1964 in Zambia to a Zimbabwean father and a Zambian mother, which means she went through the experiences of the two neighbouring countries.

Just like most of her contemporaries at the time, Rozalla started her music career at a tender age after some people identified her talent and encouraged her not to turn back.

Clubs became the seedbed for her talent as she would sing and dance to entertain patrons, while at the same time managing to earn a few dollars for herself, something which her age mates could not afford to do at the time.

Since her father was Zimbabwean, ties with her father’s relatives in that country were very strong, hence the decision to relocate to Zimbabwe in the 1980s.

And she continued with her passion, music.

It didn’t take the “new kid on the block” time to adjust to her new setting and surroundings since Zambia and Zimbabwe shared a lot in common.

Soon, Rozalla was working with a number of rhythm and blues (R&B) bands, most of whom were good on playing instruments but were in need of a good female voice to complement them. Rozalla’s stint with these bands, as well as her experience way back in Zambia, saw the singer starting her solo career which spawned a number of hits that went on to top the music charts in Zimbabwe, while in Zambia and other parts of the region, her fame was spreading.

In fact, the fame went beyond the African borders, and in 1988, Rozalla again moved, this time to London where she joined the group Band of Gypsies comprising of the talented duo of Tim Cox and Nigel Swanston.

In 1990, Rozalla’s break into the UK music scene came with the single “Born to Luv Ya” which became a club hit owing probably to her previous experience as a club artiste while still in Zambia in her youth.

But the biggest break came a year later when she released the world-renowned hit song, “Everybody’s Free” which caused a stir in the UK charts before storming other European countries where it made its way into the Billboard Top 40.

It was clear that the African girl whom two countries, Zambia and Zimbabwe sired, was indeed making an impact and was here to stay.

Her album, “Everybody’s Free”, which was inspired by the success of this single, which also carried two more hit songs “Faith (In the Power of Love)” and “Are You Ready to Fly” performed well when it went silver.

The late pop music icon Michael Jackson was something of the ‘demi-god’ of music and when Rozalla’s management and Michael Jacksons camp inked a deal which saw her touring with him across Europe on his “Dangerous” tour, her status as a musician was further raised.

She also performed alongside Billy Ocean in 2009 apart from making waves with some of her hit songs, some of which became motion-picture songs.

No doubt, Africa is proud of having one of its products who made such a mark on the international platform.

LECTRUERS at the University of Zambia (UNZA) have insisted that they will not be available for assessment of the final examination until their contractual obligations are met.

University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (NUZALRU) president Esten Chiputa said the members have refused to conduct examinations until their demands are met.

The University of Zambia is expected to conduct examination beginning June 22 to July 14, 2015.

‘We will be having a meeting with management today to discuss what had been decided by Government, on Wednesday next week we will make a decision on the way forward,” Dr Chiputa said.

And the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) has appealed to relevant authority to resolve the go slow by the lecturers and researchers amicably without affecting the education calendar.

UNZASU outgoing vice President Martin Nundwe said in an interview yesterday that the news that lecturers would withhold examination if their grievances were not met was unfortunate and should not be allowed.

“That’s a non starter, some of us are fourth year students we want to write our exams and leave the institution. We call on Government, management and lecturers to resolve this amicably,” Mr Ndundwe said.

He said paying a blind eye to the situation would not benefit any stakeholder as they would all lose out.

“We all stand to lose out, the students, lecturers management and Government,” he said.

The go slow by UNZALRU has entered week two with members demanding to be paid contractual obligations which include terminal benefits and gratuity for workers on contract.

Ms Katanga said among the arrested Juveniles were five boys, aged between 17 and 18years.

The nine girls were aged between 15 and 17 years. Among the girls, three were aged 15, while two were aged 16.

Police say they are still investigating the case and the suspects will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, 30 schools have been closed in Lusaka’s Kanyama Township following an outbreak of Typhoid.

LCC Public Relations Manager Mulunda Habeenzu in statement in Lusaka yesterday said about 30 Schools both government and private have been closed due to insanitary conditions in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20 of the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the laws of Zambia.

Luapula province permanent secretary Steven Bwalya pays respect to Paramount Chief Mwata Kazembe during a courtesy call in Mwansabombwe

The Mwata Kazembe of the Lunda People of Mwansabombwe District in Luapula Province has called on government to consider coming up with a revolving fund that will allow chiefs obtain loans.

The Mwata Kazembe says chiefs in the country are going through a lot of challenges, adding that a revolving fund will enable them address some of their problems.

He complained that living conditions of chiefs are bad despite traditional leadership being the oldest type of governance in the country.

The Mwata Kazembe said this when Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Permanent Secretary, Michael Pwete, paid a courtesy call on him at his palace.

The Mwata Kazembe said there is need for government to look after chiefs well, adding that everyone, including those in government, comes from particular chiefdoms.

He said traditional leaders will continue giving support to government developmental projects as they are concerned with the welfare of their people.

And Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Permanent Secretary, Michael Pwete, said government wants to see that chiefs are involved in developmental projects in the country.

Mr Pwete said government sees unity as cardinal in any development and that unity in the country can only be realised if chiefs are united.

He said government is committed to ensuring that chiefs lead decent lives and hence the coming up of a program to build institutional houses for chiefs throughout the country.

The Permanent Secretary was in Luapula Province to check on works for the construction of chiefs palaces.

A struggling Grade 11 Choma pupil looking for his father, a Dr Kalikoke

A STRUGGLING Grade 11 pupil of Swan Secondary School in Choma is looking for his father who allegedly divorced his mother at the time he was some months old.

Evans Kalikoke, 20, claimed he had never seen his father, a Dr Kalikoke, who used to work at Namwala General Hospital as a doctor, but was transferred to unknown hospital many years ago.

In a walk-interview at TIMES OF ZAMBIA offices yesterday, the boy, who was staying alone in the densely populated Mwapona Township, wanted his father to sponsor him to school.

He said his mother, Violet Simwaka, who was married and residing in Sikalongo Village in Chief Singani’s area, could not meet his school needs.

“I have come here to be helped to look for my father, he is a doctor and used to work at Namwala General Hospital, but he was transferred to unknown place many years ago,” he said.

He said that he was renting a room at K120 per month and paying K300 as school fees per term at Swan Secondary School and his mother was faced with financial constraints.

He said he walks to school every day covering a distance of more than six kilometres and that nobody knew the whereabouts of his father.

“I am so brilliant in class that’s why and I am looking for my father because I am confident of passing my Grade 12 examinations next year and I want him to sponsor me,” he said.

He was hopeful of being accepted at the University of Zambia to pursue engineering and later join the Zambia Army as an engineer. His mother was, however, unreachable by press time.
