Kaingu appeals for another term for PF government

Education minister Michael Kaingu says the Patriotic Front (PF) government should be given another term in office so that it can continue with the vision of the Late President Michael Sata.

Mr. Kaingu said the PF should continue with the developmental projects left by the late Mr. Sata without interruptions so that the ongoing projects can be completed.

He said the Kazungula bridge project is among the many developmental projects that the PF government has put in place saying such developmental projects should be allowed to continue smoothly.

ZANIS reports that the Education minister said this today when he paid a courtesy call on Kazungula Acting District Commissioner Bbaro Goretti at her office.

The Minister also thanked the late Mr. Sata for coming up with the new districts for the purpose of achieving development in the areas.

Mr. Kaingu added that everyone was now enjoying seeing the massive projects coming up in the newly created districts across the country.

He disclosed that Western Province for example has received a total of $29.5 million to go towards the alleviation of water problems in the province adding that he would want the same to happen in Southern province.

Earlier, Kazungula Acting District Commissioner Bbaro Goretti highlighted on a number of developmental projects in the district.

Mrs. Goretti said currently a new police station with ten housing units for the officers are under construction and is expected to be completed by December this year.

She said that works on the civic center and administration block under at slab level will be completed by March 2016.

On the Kazungula Bridge, Mrs. Goretti charged that once completed the bridge will boost the country’s economic development among other benefits.

She also said the bridge project which will take four to five years to be completed will employ more locals in the area.

My questioning is pure intimidation-HH

UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has described as pure intimidation the move by the Zambia Police to question him over his recent community tours.

Mr Hichilema has however vowed that he will continue to fight for what is right.

In a statement, Mr Hichilema said the amount of resources spent in this exercise on fuel, mobilization and other allowances is tantamount to abuse.

‘We appeared for questioning at Kabwata Police this morning in yet another case of pure intimidation that sought to limit our freedom of movement in a supposedly free and democratic country,’ he said.

Mr Hichilema said is sad that the PF have once again chosen to engage in unproductive and expensive exercise through such summons.

‘This is once again another case of misdirected priorities in the use of public resources and personal. Can you imagine how much was spent in this exercise on fuel, mobilization and other allowances over something that was not even supposed to take place when our people have no medicine in hospitals?’

‘Just last week, suspected PF cadres brutally beat up minibus drivers in town and nothing has happened to these people, yet one would have thought security personal would have been directed to stop such hooliganism against citizens,’ Mr Hichilema said.

‘For how long shall this abuse of state resources and police brutality go on while our people wallow in poverty due to lack of jobs?’

‘Anyway, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who showed up in numbers in solidarity and also Charity Katanga and the PF Government for granting us an opportunity to mingle with our people at Kabwata Police Station,’ he stated.

‘May we continue to fight for what is right because we just have One Zambia, and One Nation. May the good Lord, Jesus Christ, be with you all. Thank you’

NAREP dismisses defection of 400 members to PF

File:NAREP branded T-shirts were led by party president Elias Chipimo jr and his vice Charles Maboshe who also took time to talk to shop owners and vendors during the clean up procession.

We have finally witnessed the joining of Mr. Jevan Kamanga to the ruling PF.

In a bid to please his new masters, he chose not to attend a disciplinary hearing he had been summoned to last week and claims he has taken 400 members with him from NAREP to PF, claims we strongly dismiss as a party.

Mr. Kamanga joins the ranks of so many fake bishops that have tried their hand at politics and ended up having to sell their souls to the highest bidder.Make no mistake, this is all about money and desperation. Yes, politics of the belly is alive and kicking in Zambia.

[pullquote]we would like to invite all the so-called defectors to bring their membership cards to the secretariat as proof and we shall hold a farewell party for them[/pullquote]

After claiming to have met with president Lungu and other PF officials several months ago, Mr. Kamanga became famous for telling NAREP staff and officials that he was about to be appointed to diplomatic service in Malaysia. He was also good at promising a few gullible followers that if they went along with him they too would be appointed to the diplomatic service or as District Commissioners.

In keeping with our party values and principles and to show that we are different as NAREP, we would like to invite all the so-called defectors to bring their membership cards to the secretariat as proof and we shall hold a farewell party for them to demonstrate that we have no hard feelings. We however doubt that more than 10 genuine Party members will turn up but we will hold a party for those few anyway.

We respect the democratic rights of every one of our members but to support moves that injures on the spirit of democracy is not good for this country. We urge our members across the country to remain firm and united as we work together in strengthening our party structures at all levels.

PF Government lifts ban on hunting of Lions and Leopards in Zambia’s game parks

The PF government has lifted the ban on hunting of big cats in Zambia’s game parks.

Minister of Tourism and Arts Jean Kapata announced the lifting of the ban at a media briefing in Lusaka and said that hunting of lions will resume in the 2016/2017 season, while that of leopards can start in the 2015/2016 season.

“I am lifting the ban on the following conditions: the guidelines are drafted into a statutory instrument so that they become part of the wildlife law. Lion hunting should only resume in the 2016/2017 hunting season and not this year.Leopard hunting can resume this year 2015/2016 season, but with very cautionary quotas,” Mrs Kapata said.

The hunting of cats was enforced in January 2013.Mrs Kapata said safari hunting is the most profitable and good for off-take of wildlife which can benefit all citizens if properly handled.
She said since the adoption of community-based natural resources management approaches, safari hunting has contributed significantly to improving the livelihoods of rural communities.

The minister said the main thrust to safari hunting in Zambia is the cat hunting, which involves the shooting of the lion and leopard.
She said the suspension of the hunting in the 19 hunting blocks greatly affected wildlife resources and the livelihood of the locals in the game management areas.

“Government’s move to ban the hunting of lion and other cats on January 10, 2013 had a good basis with a background of weak regulatory mechanisms,” Mrs Kapata said.
She said some problems that led to the ban included, declining lion populations in some areas due to over-harvesting, hunting of underage lions and depleting of the lion habitats.

Mrs Kapata said the leopard population was and is still healthy but hunting was affected because of lapses in monitoring aspects.

She said based on the advice given and fresh information from the field, ZAWA has produced documentation that describes the status of the lions in Zambia and prescribed guidelines that will be used to regulate cat hunting in Zambia.

“Some of the regulatory methods are currently being used in Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. These have been found to be effective,” Mrs Kapata said.
She said Government is sure the methods will be useful in the regulation of cat hunting in Zambia.

50 +1 years legacy of trickery, mockery and treachery -Breaking the vicious circle

18

By Mukunyandela wa Nyandi

As the ‘wind of change’ was blowing across Africa, frantic efforts were being made to hammer out an agreement that would bring independence to Northern Rhodesia to ensure that Barotseland does not remain dependent on the British Crown in accordance with the treaties between the British Crown on one hand and the Barotse Monarchy on the other. Late on 18th May, 1964, ‘The Barotseland Agreement 1964’ was signed. The opening paragraph of the preamble of The Barotseland Agreement 1964 stated,

Following talks in London between the British Government, the Government of Northern Rhodesia and the Litunga of Barotseland, an Agreement was concluded at the Commonwealth Relations Office on 18th May, 1964. It is entitled ‘The Barotseland Agreement 1964. It was signed by Dr. K. D. Kaunda, Prime Minister of Northern Rhodesia, by Sir Mwanawina Lewanika III K.B.E., Litunga of Barotseland and by the Right Honourable Duncan Sandys M.P., Secretary for Commonwealth Relations and for the Colonies, signifying the approval of her Majesty’s Government.

The preamble further stated,

“The Prime Minister of Northern Rhodesia undertook on behalf of his Government that the Agreement would be reaffirmed by the Government of Northern Rhodesia at Independence.”

It is an open historic secret and fact that this undertaking was not fulfilled and remains unfulfilled today, fifty plus one years, since it was made. This is the genesis of a legacy of trickery, mockery and treachery that has prevailed since the still birth of the Unitary State called Republic of Zambia.

President Kaunda

Three months later, in a very flowery speech delivered in the Kashandi at the headquarters of the Barotse Government in Lealui on Thursday 6th August 1964, Mr Kenneth David Kaunda said among other things,

“… I can assure you, Sir Mwanawina, and all members of the Barotse Royal Family and of the Barotse Government, that the Government has no wish to interfere with the day to day running of the internal affairs of Barotseland.”

Again, the truth on the ground supported by documentary evidence and history is that the Kaunda regime made it its prime responsibility to interfere in the day-to-day affairs of Barotseland. This was done by destabilizing the Katengo Legislative Council soon after Zambia’s independence in 1965 when he replaced it by District Councils that were answerable to the Minister of Local Government and not the Litunga anymore. They went as far as looting the Barotse National Treasury in order to cripple the operations of the Barotse
??
Government. On 6th August 1964, Kaunda in a speech to the nation, nicknamed Barotseland Government as Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) and robbed it capacity to stand on its feet until it was barely crawling on its belly, such that, the first popularly elected Ngambela, The Right Hon. Hastings Ndangwa Nooyo, had to abdicate for lack of capacity to sustain his day to day needs.
The syndrome of trickery, mockery and treachery continued as the Kaunda regime enacted legislation after legislation mutilating the Barotseland Agreement 1964, contrary to its own provisions. This started with the enactment of the Local Government Act 69 of 1965. The last nail in the coffin was the enactment of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment No. 5) Act 33 of 1969 which completely abrogated and literally threw into the refuse bin The Barotseland Agreement 1964. Noteworthy, is the fact that all this was done without the consent of the people of Barotseland, the other party to the Agreement.

Twenty-one years down the line Mr. Kaunda realized that his castle-empire built over 27 years was crumbling down and tried to use his last trick in the bag to save himself from the eminent collapse by using flowery language to the Barotse people. He promised to re-think The Barotseland Agreement 1964. He went as far as promising the BRE the best legal representation at the expense of GRZ. Of course even that turned out to be too little, too late as the Kaunda days were numbered and his empire was found wanting and lost the 1991 elections.

President Chiluba

The Movement for Multiparty Democracy whirlwind which led to the tumbling of the Kaunda regime was principally founded and spearheaded by some fine Barotse brains such as Mr. Akashambatwa Mbikusita and it promised to redress all the ills of the Kaunda regime, which was draconian by the time it tumbled from power. Among the serious ills that were to be redressed was the trampling underfoot of The Barotseland Agreement 1964. At the eleventh hour, the MMD’s march to take over government was hijacked by a self-confessed political engineer and trickster, Fredrick Jacob Titus Mpundu Chiluba, who dribbled everyone else to position himself for the top job (MHSRIP). Consequently, much to the frustration and disillusionment of many within the rank and file he abandoned the fine tenets of the founding members’ dream. The Chiluba regime declared The Barotseland Agreement 1964 ‘statutory stale’, the Litunga was threatened with arrest and it took the Barotse people to literally protect their King as human shields. Senior Chief Inyambo was thrown behind bars and the ‘divide and rule’ tactic was entrenched into the trickery, mockery and treachery legacy by inciting the Nkoya people against their own brothers, gazetting chiefs contrary to Barotse norms and traditions as well as the Zambian Constitution, and refusing to gazette rightly enthroned Senior Chief Amukena II.

Mr. Kaunda tried to play the BA ’64 card again in 1996 but was outwitted by the political engineer through a constitutional amendment that appeared to bar him from contesting presidential elections.

President Mwanawasa

This prompted an election boycott by UNIP, which delivered an easy victory to the trickster and master dribbler late Mr. Chiluba. Mr. Chiluba was succeeded by his chosen successor Mr. Levy Mwanawasa SC who tried to appease the Barotse with a balanced development agenda and equitable distribution of the national cake. He referred to the territory by its rightful name of Barotseland, which was treason under both the Kaunda and the Chiluba regimes by the bare mention of the name. This softened stance ??resulted into the bouncing back of popularity of the MMD in Barotseland in 2006.

Riding on the same wave of popularity Mr. Rupiah Bwezani Banda, won the Barotse vote during the election after Mr. Mwanawasa’s demise in 2008 (MHSRIP).
Mr. Banda quickly took on the garment of his old mentor and brother in-law, Mr. Kaunda embraced the same legacy of trickery, mockery and treachery. First and foremost he insulted the Barotse by saying he never asked for their vote. It was under Mr. Banda that the Barotse anger against this legacy of trickery, mockery and treachery almost reached a crescendo and was met with brutality and iron fists. For this reason we shall not forget the January 14th 2011 massacre of unarmed and peaceful people of Barotseland butchered in cold blood. May their souls rest in peace.

President Sata

Mr. Michael Chilufya Mwango Felix Katongo Sata (MHSRIP), the King Cobra, on the other hand took full advantage of the situation and true to his nature as a snake in the grass played to the gallery and declared himself Linyungandambo member and that the BA ’64 was an honourable and sensible Agreement which was still alive. He promised to restore it within 90 days if elected into power. The sweet tongue of the serpent played the trick and earning himself a reasonal number of votes from Barotseland to him a marginal edge over his principle rival, Mr. Banda, to win him the Zambia presidency and two parliamentary seats in Barotseland. The only reward Barotseland got was the release of Barotse detainees, a window dressing meeting at State House with some Barotse activists and scorning the Litunga as well as establishing a commission of inquiry to investigate the 14th January 2011 massacre of innocent Barotseland nationals, whose report and recommendations have never seen the light of day, and the publication of the BA ’64 in the three main newspapers. Further, the King Cobra arrested more Barotse nationals, increased state sponsored brutality, more venomous threats, more divide and rule, more trickery, mockery and treachery as well as declaring war on an unarmed and peaceful people of Barotseland.
The 20th January, 2015 presidential elections demonstrated the national significance of the BA ’64 as presidential aspirants tried to outwit one another by making this or that statement over the Agreement. We ended up having a catalogue of the most balanced and sane positions on the issue as well as the most absurd and irrational ones.

President Lungu

Perhaps what is not publicly known is the fact that among other things the candidate who emerged victorious, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, actually made sweeping promises over the issue to a group of Barotse youth activists. Among the promises he made was that he would allow the people of Barotseland to determine their destiny and would immediately engage all the stakeholders to that effect. Further, he would release the Rodger Chongwe Commission Report and he would immediately change the nickname of Western Province back to Barotseland as well as release all persons incarcerated on Barotseland related allegations.

Information in the public domain is that within 24hrs of his swearing in as Zambia’s 6th Republican president, Mr. Lungu was in receipt of a letter from the BNFA Chairman General Mr. Clement Wainyae Sinyinda challenging him to among other things:
“… immediately engage the people of Barotseland and Barotse civil society organizations for the sole purpose of working out transitional arrangements towards self determination and self rule for Barotseland.”
????
What is also common knowledge is that the President of Zambia communicated his desire to engage the Barotse Authorities and activists through the BNFA Chairperson General. He further announced the same to the international community while in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the AU Heads of State summit, to be undertaken upon his return to Zambia.
It has been more than three months since the AU heads of state summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Mr. Lungu has remained mute on this matter. This has prompted the BNFA Executive Committee to submit to him a ‘Position Statement’ on the matter of the Actualization of Barotseland Statehood on Thursday, 23rd April 2015, which is indeed the Position Statement of the people of Barotseland as a whole. The president’s ‘very audible’ silence on this crucial matter especially after the buoyancy with which he approached it at the onset of his presidency reeks of the legacy of trickery, mockery and treachery that have dogged and bedevilled the matter over the past fifty plus one years.

It remains to be seen whether indeed as per suspicion the current president will be just like the rest of his predecessors or he will break and depart from the tradition of his predecessors by demonstrating political will to ensure that the matter of the actualization of Barotseland statehood receives the due attention it deserves from the Zambian government, including subjecting it to international interventions because the Barotse people believe they are not making any strange or unreasonable demands but only what is rightfully their RIGHT, falling within the perimeters of logic and legality in accordance with universally accepted international norms. It remains to be seen whether Mr Lungu, who prides himself as being a seasoned lawyer, will make good his earlier commitment in line with his campaign promise that he will be a listening President.

Yet when all is said and done, the responsibility to break this vicious circle of trickery, mockery and treachery by successive Zambian regimes lies squarely in the hands of the Barotse themselves. It is up to all the Barotse to stand up and be counted and say enough is enough, we are fed up of this legacy and put it to an end once and for all. It is called a revolution. A revolution in the past meant ‘blood and iron’ but in this day and age it doesn’t need to be. That is why there is talk of the velvet revolution also referred to as the Arab spring. The Barotse revolution does not even need to get to that level of hostilities. It is a peaceful revolution of a people refusing to be trampled upon, tricked, mocked, and treated with disdain and in a treacherous manner. Refusing to remain silent, cognisant of the fact that, in Martin Luther King Jnr’s words,

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”
Believing the words of Nelson Mandela,

“No people are perpetually too weak as to fail to stand up for their rights”
Tukuongote shaa! Wa mwana Nongolo kapa wa mwana Muka, if need be, until freedom reigns from the highest mountain top to the lowest valley!

Government calls on all Citizens renting out property to be paying withholding tax.

Chishimba Kambwili

Government has called on all citizens renting out property to be paying 10 per cent withholding tax to the Zambia Revenue Authority because it is law.

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili made the call during a live interview on Radio Luapula in Nchelenge District.

Mr. Kambwili said the law was passed between 1992 and 1994 by the MMD Government at the time but were timid to implement the law because of politics of appeasement.

He said withholding tax is not a new law except that the MMD feared to lose votes from the people if they implemented the law but law is law and every citizen should comply.

Mr. Kambwili said the PF Government is just implementing the law that has been on the law books for many years and every citizen who owns property and rents it out should pay the 10 per cent withholding tax to enable Government in raising the required funds for financing developmental projects.

The Minister added that failure to pay the tax is breaking the law and if there are concerns on the amount of the percentage, Government is ready to dialogue on the percentage of the tax but paying withholding tax is law and every citizen should comply.

Mr. Kambwili was responding to a caller who wanted to know the meaning of withholding tax which the tenants of property being rented to them were required to pay to the Zambia Revenue Authority.

A delegation of South African business people has arrived in the country to explore business and investment opportunities on the Copperbelt and North Western Provinces.

The delegation of 14 companies which arrived in Kitwe yesterday includes companies from Energy, Engineering, Construction, Mining, Logistics, and the Finance sectors.

Green Party condemns the lifting of ban on hunting lions and leopards

8

Green Party leader Peter Sinkamba
Green Party leader Peter Sinkamba

Green Party President Peter Sinkamba has condemned PF Government’s decision to lift the ban on hunting lions and leopards.

Mr Sinkamba said the decision is outrageous and too ghastly to contemplate.

He observed that the ban was initiated when conservationists warned that wildlife populations, especially the cat family were facing a greater threat than at any time since the 1980s.

‘We all know that the number of lions and other big cat species in Zambia’s major parks is depleted and limited due to poaching and other anthropogenic activities,’ Mr Sinkamba said.

Mr Sinkamba revealed that the total population of lions in the country as at 2013 was estimated to be between 2,500 and 4,700.

‘These are just crude estimates since successive governments after Dr Kaunda’s UNIP, have over the years failed to sustain a continuous wildlife census system,’ he said.

‘Much as we are aware that the PF government is facing serious budget deficit challenges, it is extremely outrageous to resort to unleashing safari hunters on to limited populations of big cat species, regardless the fact that safari hunting is allegedly most profitable.’

Mr Sinkamba has since urged Government to reverse lifting of the ban and instead come up with other revenue generating schemes.

‘This type of approach is definitely awful. Posterity will judge our generation harshly for having been responsible for depletions of rhinos, black lechwes and other species,’ Mr Sinkamba said.

Tourism and Arts Minister Jean Kapata announced the lifting of the ban at a media briefing on Friday adding that hunting of lions will only resume in the 2016/2017 season, while that of leopards can start in the 2015/2016 season.

“I am lifting the ban on the following conditions, the guidelines are drafted into a statutory instrument so that they become part of the wildlife law. Lion hunting should only resume in the 2016/2017 hunting season and not this year.

“Leopard hunting can resume this year 2015/2016 season, but with very cautionary quotas,” Mrs Kapata said.

The hunting of cats was enforced in January 2013.

Beating of a Chief by his subjects is indiscipline of the highest level-Minister

14

Muchinga Province Minister Mwimba Malama says the recent beating and assault of chief Muyombe of the Tumbuka people of Mafinga District is indiscipline of the highest level.

Speaking in an interview with Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali yesterday Mr. Malama says he condemns the act by the traditional ruler’s subjects in the strongest terms.

The provincial minister has since directed the police in the area to be on high alert and bring culprits to book and ensure that acts of such nature are avoided in future.

He has further directed that the perpetrators who managed to escape as well as those already in custody face the wrath of the law.

So far 16 people have been arrested in connection with the beating and assault of the chief.

Chief Muyombe of the Tumbuka people of Mafinga district was on the morning of 2nd May gravely assaulted by his subjects who were also demanding that he steps down because he allegedly does not come from the linage of Chiefs.

Some of the people who attacked the chief are reportedly still hiding in the neighbouring Malawi and a search for them continues.

Meanwhile, the Chief Muyombe who admitted to Chinsali District Hospital after being assaulted has been discharged and is back at his palace.

Zambia has been proposed to temporarily host the Great Lakes Region Secretariat currently located in Bujumbura-Burundi following increased unrest in that country.

Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba confirmed the development to Zambian journalists attending the Great Lakes Region pre-summit meetings in Luanda, Angola this morning.

The extraordinary summit of the Heads of States and Government of the Great Lakes Region opens in Luanda tomorrow May 18 and President Edgar Lungu will arrive here this afternoon to join 11 other Leaders for the Meeting.

Top on the Summit Agenda is the current turbulences in Burundi where President Pierre Nkurunziza was reportedly toppled by insurgents last week while he was away attending a regional Meeting in Tanzania.

And Mr Kalaba says the Council of Ministers of the Great Lakes Region says Zambia should host the regional Secretariat for now until the volatile situation in Burundi is brought under control.

Mr Kalaba said the Council proposed Zambia as a preferred relocation for the Great Lakes Secretariat because it currently hosts the Center for Democracy and Good Governance in Lusaka.

He also disclosed the the Republic of Rwanda has also been proposed to host the Secretariat alongside Zambia but that a final decision will be made by the Heads of States and Government at the Summit tomorrow.

Mr kalaba also disclosed the workers from the Great Lakes Region Secretariat that were detained in Bujumbura are still locked up and that the Summit will discuss ways of negotiating their release.

“Currently there is a challenge in Bujumbura, the workers are still under detention, the situation right now is unstable”, said Mr Kalaba.

Meanwhile, Mr Kalaba has also disclosed that the Council of Ministers proposed the level of representation being sent to Burundi be escalated to Heads of State and Government from the Great Lakes Region so that they could go and confer with President Nkurunziza about what is happening in that country and also chart a way forward.

Earlier, the Council of Ministers had proposed a delegation of Foreign Ministers from the regional grouping should travel to Burundi to find out first hand what was happening in that country.

We have many people working with us in the UPND-Father Bwalya

59
Frank Bwalya
Frank Bwalya

Patriotic Front (PF) member Frank Bwalya has said that said people surrounding UPND president Hakainde Hichilema are not happy with his leadership style.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Father Bwalya said that Mr Hichilema will be shocked with what will remain of his party before the 2016 elections.

“Three months before the elections, HH will be shocked with what will happen and remain of his party,” Father Bwalya said.

He said people are no longer viewing the UPND as a party that is likely to form Government as evidenced by the defection of its vice-president to the PF.

“We have many people working with us in the UPND but it is surprising that the man who claimed he controls the intelligence does not know,” Fr Bwalya said.

Fr Bwalya said if Mr Hichilema knew that Mr Kapita was defecting to the PF, he would have fired him but he didn’t.

“He claimed that he controlled the intelligence. Why then didn’t he know that Mr Kapita was defecting? If he knew, why didn’t he fire him as per rules of politics? Then he feared repercussions,” he said.

And press statement posted by UPND deputy spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo, attributed to the party’s media and publicity committee, described Mr Kapita’s departure from the party as “good riddance”. Mr Lifwekelo described Mr Kapita as antagonistic and divisive.

“Mr Kapita had lost credibility and his departure from UPND will elate many genuine UPND members who feel very strongly that he was a plant in UPND and was eating with both hands,” the press statement reads.

Mr Kapita, a founder member of the UPND, and former MP for Mwinilunga West, defected to the PF along with several other UPND members in Mwinilunga on Saturday and was received by President Lungu.

“It’s with a heavy heart I am resigning from the UPND, a party I helped to build from inception in 1998,” Mr Kapita said said at Freedom Square.

Former Solwezi East MP Richard Taima said the departure of Mr Kapita from the UPND is good for the PF.

“Mr Kapita is a man of high political experience whose defection is a big plus to the PF and cannot be down-played by the UPND,” Mr Taima said.

Mr Taima also thanked President Lungu for his all-embracing and inspiring leadership style.

He said President Lungu has embraced all well-meaning Zambians into his Government regardless of their political affiliation.

“Due to his likable and inspiring leadership style, President Lungu will lead the PF into victory in 2016 even in areas where the PF has faced resistance such as North-Western Province,” he said.

He said in politics, victory is either on account of political party popularity or an individual’s popularity and influence and that President Lungu has both.

And former Kabompo East MP under the UPND ticket Lucas Chikoti, who is now chairperson for the Council of Elders in North-Western Province, said Mr Kapita’s resignation is a huge blow to the UPND and a gain to the PF.

“As elders, we mingled with President Lungu at Kansanshi hotel the other night. He is a humble man and he is amiable. This is what is attracting people to the PF,” Mr Chikoti said.

Nkana insist Zanaco will not beat them again in the final leg later this season despite recording a fortunate home draw on Saturday at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

Seventh placed Nkana stole a last-minute 1-1 draw with second positioned Zanaco when they scored a 90th minute penalty converted by Shadreck Musonda after the visitors had taken a 36th minute lead through Boyd Musonda.

“If you see the way Zanaco are playing, they are not a pushover they have quality in the team and I am happy with the way we have been playing against Zanaco and hope to tale the three points in the return leg against them,” Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi said.

Zanaco have not picked up a home or away win over Nkana since beating the latter 3-1 in Kitwe in November, 2012.

Since then they have picked up three defeats and two draws against Nkana.

Zimbabwe made an important headway in their chase for a 2015 Cosafa Castle Cup quarterfinal date with Zambia after winning their opening Group A match Moruleng Stadium in Rustenberg.

Goals from Carlos Rusere in the 28th minute and Ronald Chitiyo in the 66th minute sent Zimbabwe to the top of Group A on day one of the Cosafa Castle Cup that South Africa is hosting from May 17-30.

Namibia and Seychelles are tied on one point after they finished scoreless in the earlier kickoff.

Victory for Zimbabwe on May 19 against Seychelles will see them through to a May 24 date with defending champions Zambia.
