Weeds in my Garden

9

By Mazala Zulu

Weeds in my garden.

They keep coming back. I thought I could get rid of the weeds in my garden. I even got a formula to get rid of them, still some of them keep coming back. They’re not overwhelming but I just have to remember to do my part to control them so that they don’t get out of control and spread.

If I don’t pay attention to them, they grow and spread and before I know it they take over everything and all that is good can easily get destroyed. I have to admit, recently I haven’t been able to pay as much attention as I would like, and so the weeds started spreading. I got my old formula and applied it. It works all the time. And by next week most of them will be gone. Sure some others will come back – I plan on paying attention, and getting rid of them as quickly as I can.

I hope you can see where I am heading to? Yes, negative thoughts work the same way as the weeds in my backyard. If you don’t control them, if you don’t keep them out, if you don’t use the right formula to get rid of them they’ll spread and destroy your life.[pullquote]Success is doing what is successful and not worrying about failure.[/pullquote]

When you get rid of negative thinking you attract and create positive situations into your life. You quickly put an end to self doubt, worry, fear, anxiety, and failure. You increase your confidence, you take the right actions, and you make the right choices. With this attitude you meet the right people and you get where you want to be. By the way, you’re also a lot happier because you’re no longer beating yourself up with all those negative thoughts.

With positive thinking in your head, you believe in yourself and when you believe in yourself you go from failure to success.

It is actually very simple to MOVE from negative to positive thinking. One way that works for me is when I have a negative thought, I tell myself to throw that thought in the rubbish bin, close it and work on not thinking about it. I quickly replace it with something exciting in my life. It’s like removing a bad DVD and replacing it with a good DVD film. Before I know it, that negative thought is meaningless in my head. This really works and there is no magic involved. It all happens very smoothly and it only happens because my subconscious mind begins to respond to the new beliefs.

Enjoy more success, enjoy more confidence, and believe in yourself.

Those pesky weeds will always show up in my backyard. And those negative thoughts will always come up from time to time. You won’t be able to get rid of all of them.

The negative thoughts that dominate your mind everyday are tied to negative beliefs. It’s those beliefs that create the struggle and misery in your life.

Your subconscious mind is always at work and always responding to your thoughts and beliefs. It goes out and creates your life based on those thoughts and beliefs. If you want success you need to have thoughts and beliefs about success.

Watch your thoughts, they always start your actions.

Like weeds, when you control them, you have to keep paying attention because if you stop or if you come up with excuses those little negative thoughts will grow and spread. Just like the weeds in a garden.

As you continually remove, change and replace to positive thoughts it becomes a habit and once you form that habit you have greater success. It’s a “snowball effect”. Once it starts it just gets better and better.

Take control and direct your subconscious mind. You can and will achieve your goals when you believe. You can believe, when you get rid of the doubt, worry and negative thinking.

Wishing you continued success…

Death Of A President; The Running Mate & The Zambian Perspective

37
Late President Levy Mwanawasa

By Kasabo S. Kalussa.

His death came three days after his 68th birthday and already, rumours were rife that the eccentric Nigerian Prophet TB Joshua had foretold the event.

Away from the apocalyptic part of it, John Atta Mills is President number two to have died whilst in office this year in Africa and the continent is watching closely.

In Zambia, his demise has just re-ignited an age old debate that pits conspiracy against facts and reality against myth.

Ghana is among the few four continental nations that have an interesting clause in their respective constitutions that triggers automatic ascendancy to the Presidency and 6 six hours after President Mills’ passing, there was already a new man in charge of Africa’s biggest cocoa exporter.

It was a swift and fast take over, even before the Presidents corpse could go cold, the political machine had already churned out a new player on the scene; John Mahama. It is imperative that lessons ought to be learned from the recent experiences in Malawi and Ghana as Zambia adopts a new constitution.

According to article 108 (c) of the first installment of the draft constitution, the Vice President may assume the office of the President in the event of a vacancy owing to an incapacitation.

Zambia like the West African state of Ghana has had its own unkind experience of a sitting President being unable to complete his term of office due to a sudden and unexpected death. And so the need for a running mate many would say.

When President Mwanawasa left the country for a summit in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm-El-Sheikh, no one knew it was going to be the last time everyone saw of him in 2008.

He later died in a French military hospital and close to over ZMK 19 billion was spent parading his body nationwide in what was termed a farewell journey for the dead President.

What followed was a relentless jostle for the keys to State House and as per requirements; Zambia would replace Mwanawasa in a space of 90 days.

It was an expensive and arduous exercise, state resources were channeled to another election barely 2yrs after going to the polls.

Proponents point out that in that desperate hour, some people who were vying for the job made some wrong decisions and almost mutilated national coffers in a bid to win the vote. The country even saw “image builders” to repair some of our politician’s images that lay in ruins.

That 2008 experience for Zambia will never be forgotten!

Today, as the country attempts to have new governing document, the episode has come to the fore vividly.

Advocates for a similar clause as in Malawi and Ghana argue that having a running mate will greatly lift the strain on the national treasury in the sudden incapacitation of a sitting President.Further, they advance the aspect of a grand reduction in the powers vested in the Head of State if the office were to be deputized by an elected Vice-President.

In this regard, a Vice-President who does not feast from the same table as the Head of State may ultimately take up the role of a good watchdog in decision making.

It may further grant the office bearer constitutional protection from being sacked in the face of personal whims and caprices from the head of state.

Ghana’s smooth transition is a classic example for those in this camp. The postulation of such reflects the state being an institution characterized and defined by rules and procedure.

Against this background, the demise of the President may not translate into an all out halt in the operations of the state as the law expects there to be a President 24/7.There is no mourning in the constitution, thus a new President is installed without undue delay!

Nevertheless given the two facets to this deeply divisive and contentious clause, those against such an arrangement are adamant it would be a recipe for chaos if it goes through. The Running mate in the Zambian perspective, they claim, is all together unnecessary and undesirable and it leaves a trail of questions more than answers.

  • It may potentially open a bad can of worms that will be politically too difficult to contain.
  • Among the foremost notion advanced in this regard is the abrasive nature of the Zambian political landscape.
  • What the running mate will seek to do is to bring in personal interests first before serving the people.
  • In this regard, an elected Vice President may be tempted to spend unnecessary efforts trying to discredit the superior knowing that in the event the President is ousted, he will be next in line for the top job.
  • The scenarios may be different; it could be the sudden development of major rift or there could be a political bone to chew between the two office bearers.
  • Antagonists in the debate further claim the clause weakens the office of the President. The Vice President will tend to be too autonomous and insulate his office from the influences of the President.
  • It is a dangerous prospect as it may create the undesirable outcome of springing up two centers of power in the government.
  • An advancing democracy is not defined by a running mate and a Vice-President simply takes up an advisory role to the President and acts as a ”chola boy” according to some.
  • Interestingly, there are even those with superstitious inklings on the matter. They feel the clause will give impetus for public officials to make use of the black arts of witchcraft and wizardry to try and eliminate opponents in a bid to ascend to the Presidency.

It is a bizarre take on things as such practices are non-existent in the minds of some. Indeed some of the political deaths in Africa are next to suspicious!

The debate will rage on as the country does and immense soul searching on what the future holds on the subject. It is a question that needs towels over our heads and collective thinking as we ponder whether or not we need a running mate.

Fred Membe and the Post Newspapers are the actual liars

Information Minister Fackson Shamenda (l) and Post newspapers owner Fred Mmember clench hands after a meeting in Lusaka
File:Information Minister Fackson Shamenda (l) and Post newspapers owner Fred Mmembe clench hands after a meeting in Lusaka

By G.USENGA

Fred Membe and Malupenga are two cunning characters who are very swift at identifying the lies from others and forgetting and hiding their pockets full of lies, slander and deception which have lingered in them for a long time. As such Fred Membe has become both a professional and international liar capable of twisting the lie to appear like truth and otherwise.

Mr.Membe is such a craft guy that can originate and generate a strange lie which can sound appealing and truthful to the readers by even quoting some unknown sources that in reality have never existed. The worst part is that Fred can obscure the real truth about a certain happening because it touches him and his fellow minions.

They have been accusing Zambia Watchdog and other genuine media organizations of peddling lies about them and the PF government, but when the truth comes out, they become quite instead of coming out in open that they were trying to block the truth.

Recently, the whole lot of the Fred Membe and his crooked counterpart,Mtembo Nchito, were on Hakainde Hichilema trying to define the so called lies from him (which we are waiting to prove them later), on how PF wants to send youths to train as militia men in Sudan. I can’t say this is not true as we still have to wait for some time for proof. The truth will surely come out one day. Let us wait and see.

But we ask ourselves these Questions. Why choosing a war torn Sudan to send PF youths for further education when we have several peaceful countries from where these Zambians can be educated.[pullquote]But we ask ourselves these Questions. Why choosing a war torn Sudan to send PF youths for further education when we have several peaceful countries from where these Zambians can be educated.[/pullquote]

Why choosing to enter into the Memorandum of Understanding with Sudan and Al-Bashir to have some of our youths be trained in different skills in Sudan? What are those skills which Sudanese have which no other countries have including Zimbabwe which has come to be a very strong ally of Sata? Don’t these include military skills?

This issue really raises suspicion. You know even during Kaunda era that there were certain special men with special skills acquired from some former communist countries to propel the one-party state agenda and to execute anyone against the state secretly. At that time suspicion rose on why the government was sending youths to be trained in that communist country. But since that time information was made deliberately scarce, very few knew these facts and so the one party state scheme was successfully implemented for many years with the help of this highly skilled office of the President (OP). [pullquote]Why choosing to enter into the Memorandum of Understanding with Sudan and Al-Bashir to have some of our youths be trained in different skills in Sudan? What are those skills which Sudanese have which no other countries have including Zimbabwe which has come to be a very strong ally of Sata? Don’t these include military skills?[/pullquote]

I am seeing this coming back to Zambia with the help of some skilled youths highly trained in those execution skills acquired from different countries to deal with the opposition and anyone against the state just as how Mugabe used to deal with opposition political parties. Find out why Zambian government seems to have no problems making deals with Al-Bashir of Sudan who went flat-out killing the opposition members and Southern Sudan’s people with the help of highly skilled secret soldiers and police. Why is Zambian government finding no problems with Mugabe who has been killing the opposition members ruthlessly?

You know what, all this is known by Fred Membe, but now that they are colleagues in this scheme, he is very quite.

So it is too early to say HH cheated on training of militia in Sudan, but we know what the post and Fred Membe cheated hence liable for a curse.
Zambians do remember the open lie by the Post on Rupiah Banda recently, when Membe claimed that Rupiah pleaded with Sata not to send him to jail because he was too old. The post quoted false sources that Banda met Sata in presence of GBM, Sakeni and others to convince him not to send him (Banda) to jail. This story was even used in the editorial comment by Membe…However the state house, Membe’s allies refuted the claim and further rubbished it as false. The Post newspaper couldn’t even publish the statement by the state house in refuting the false claims by Fred Membe.(READ THE QUOTE BELOW BY GOVERNMENT MOUTH PIECE ZNBC IN PROVING THE THAT MEMBE IS A LIAR ON 21/02/2012)

STATE HOUSE has refuted the headline story that appeared in todays edition of The Post newspaper alleging that President Michael Sata, held a private meeting with former president Rupiah Bwezani Banda after a luncheon hosted in honour of the Chipolopolo Boys last Tuesday.

State House is concerned that the newspaper went as far as basing their editorial comment on a story that has turned out to be untrue.
State House says it unfortunate and injurious to the persons accused and therefore an appropriate retraction is required.

According to President Sata’s special assistant for press and public relations George Chellar the Head of State has never held any private talks with Mr Banda or indeed anyone to discuss his immunity or any matters related to the on-going investigations on corruption against some members of the previous regime.

The Post Newspapers in its Tuesday February 21st edition quotes well-placed sources alleging that President Sata, in the company of Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba, Home Affairs Minister Kennedy Sakeni and his deputy Obvious Mwaliteta, met Mr Banda who they claim pleaded with the President not to send him to jail because he was too old.

Now who is supposed to be cursed, the one whose claims are yet to be proved or already proved and dispelled with impunity?

Further,do you recall when Membe’s post showed a house from new Kasama in Lusaka that it was built by Rupiah Banda when the house is being rented for him by the government? The Zambian government is renting a house for the former head of state but the Fred Membe twisted it to convince especially gullible Zambians that it was Rupiah’s newly built house. But this Fredrick Mumembe knew the fact that the house was rented by the government, but chose to tell a serious lie to increase the demand for his paper stocks.

Besides,do you remember when Membe claimed that 136,000 dollars went missing in RB’s bedroom and went further in the following day’s paper, to claim that the case was reported at Woodland Police station and the Inspector General of Police was phoned about the incidence. To spice up the high profile lie, Fred Membe claimed that the police who went to check for the missing cash at RB’s house were stopped by Thandiwe at the house. [pullquote]To spice up the high profile lie, Fred Membe claimed that the police who went to check for the missing cash at RB’s house were stopped by Thandiwe at the house.[/pullquote]
But later the Inspector general of police refuted the claims and asked the post to retract the false story.Further, it came out clear that the post were actually cheating after Zambian watchdog and other genuine online media showed that Thandiwe whom the post claimed to have stopped police from entering the house, had not actually returned from the USA.At that point the Post and Fred Membe were shown to be extreme liars of 21st Century.

Finally, it is clear that it is Fred Membe who is a liar and lives by lies and he wants to survive by lies. He is full of deceit and he wants to grow his business by deceiving people. Thus he can team up with his fellow crooks and go to DBZ, get a loan and later refuse to pay back, and even use further lies to try to jump out of the hook of his own misdeeds.

Mumembe doesn’t need to be cursed, for he is a curse himself. The old man Fred Membe is surely not only cursed but he is a curse and anyone who gets close to him receives the curses. He uses all the tactics applied by Satan, the Devil to deceive this Zambian generation.
Zambians be on the lookout for this deceitful character that has become an icon of the lies.

Take Off the Limits

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“I have seen that everything [human] has its limits and end [no matter how extensive, noble, and excellent]; but Your commandment is exceedingly broad and extends without limits [into eternity].”
(Psalm 119:96, AMP)
TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Did you know you can limit your life by dwelling on the wrong things? So often, wrong thinking keeps people stuck right where they are. If you think you’ll never accomplish your dreams, then you’ll stay stuck where you are. If you think you don’t have the talent, the connections or the funds, then you are limiting yourself.

We have to remember that God’s promises never return void. His Word stands true forever! Don’t limit what God can do in your life by focusing on what you see in the natural realm. You have to realize that you serve a supernatural God, and just because you don’t see a way doesn’t mean that God doesn’t have a way. God can bring one opportunity across your path that will thrust you to a whole new level. He has explosive blessings in store that can blast you out of where you are and into a place of abundance. If you’ll shift your focus from this limited realm and start looking at God’s supernatural realm, you’ll see His unlimited possibilities for your future. Take the limits off by setting your thoughts on what Almighty God can do in your life today!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father in heaven, today I lift my eyes to You. You alone are the source of my strength, peace and provision. I choose to delight myself in You knowing that You will give me the desires of my heart in Jesus’ name. Amen.

MMD condemns the PF governments continued harassment of the Opposition

PRESS RELEASE

The MMD strongly condemns the continued harassment of UPND President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema by the PF government. President Sata’s insatiable desire to silence the opposition is bad for Zambia and bad for democracy. His plans against the opposition will not work as the Zambian people are resolved to defend democracy at all cost.

Opposition leaders around the world are expected to expose areas of government’s deficiencies with a hope that the government will do something about the highlighted issue. To Harass Mr Hakainde for visiting Evelyn Hone is to say the least cheap and a show of PF’s lack of understanding of the role of the opposition.
UPND and Mr Hichilema should not be intimidated in any way as the Zambian people are in support of the efforts the opposition is making in the country.

MMD shall continue to accelerate its efforts to represent the aspirations of the Zambian people and shall not be side tracked by insecurities of the PF government and Mr Sata.

The MMD further condemns the brutality of the police against innocent and un armed citizens who went to show solidarity with President Hichilema. Such conduct by the police is what has implicated world leaders who have ended up being charged by international courts. Police brutality is not part of Zambian culture and we are not going to allow it on our soil. The police are part of us and the PF should not use them to divide the nation.

National Airports Corporation to introduce an infrastructure development levy on all departing passengers from Zambian airports

The innaugural flight for Emirates Airlines touches down at Kenneth Kaunda international airport

THE National Airports Corporation (NAC) this week has announced the introduction of a levy to be paid by passengers. The levy is meant for infrastructure development, specifically on the airports it administers country-wide.

The aviation infrastructure and development levy, which comes into effect on September 1, this year, is targeting all departing passengers.

According to figures made available to the media, domestic passengers will be paying K26, 400 while those embarking on international flights will have to pay K54, 800. This is in addition to the departure fee and airport taxes that in most cases have be incorporated into the air tickets fares.

All charges will be payable before departure.

Collum Coal Mine operations in Sinazongwe District to temporary remain suspended-Government

COLLUM Coal Mine operations in Sinazongwe District will temporary remain suspended until the Government and the directors of the mine thoroughly address all pressing issues, Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Stephen Kampyongo has said.

Police arrested 12 suspects in connection with the killing of a Chinese national, Wu Shengzai, 50, at the mine following a riot earlier in the week.

The riot was sparked by what the workers termed as Collum Mine management’s delay to effect the recently announced minimum wage. Five suspects appeared in the Choma Magistrate Court on Wednesday.

On Thursday, two Deputy Ministers of Home Affairs, Mr Kampyongo and his counterpart, Nixon Chilangwa; Southern Division Police Commissioner, Charity Katanga and other senior Government officials undertook a tour of the mine to assess the security situation.

Speaking when he addressed more than 50 workers, Mr Kampyongo said his ministry would recommend reopening of the mine after all issues were addressed.

The mine has more than 800 employees stationed in different mining shafts.

He said all relevant ministries and the directors of Collum Coal Mine would have to meet soon to iron out misunderstandings.

“As a ministry, we want to ensure there is security for investors and workers. We need to find lasting solutions and put strategic mechanisms to prevent future incidences of riots and loss of lives,” he said.

His ministry, along with Labour and Mines, Collum Coal Mine directors and Mine-workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) officials were scheduled to hold a caucus meeting yesterday.

During the meeting, it was discovered that the mine had two workers’ unions, MUZ and the Gemstone Allied Workers Union of Zambia.

And Mr Chilangwa complained to some Chinese officials during an earlier meeting at their offices for failing to employ an interpreter to provide effective communication between employers and workers.

He wondered how Chinese and their workers related to each other when employees had difficulties in understanding Chinese language.

MUZ Southern region senior organising secretary, Bernard Dolopo said the union had always been engaging the mine management in dialogue and was saddened that workers resorted to rioting.

Sinazongwe Constituency Member of Parliament, Richwell Siamunene thanked the Government for exhibiting leadership in resolving the impasse at the mine.

Police summons: HH u-turns

UPND President Hakainde Hichilema
UPND President Hakainde Hichilema

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema, who yesterday morning dared police to follow him to his residence if they wanted to arrest him, later in the day u-turned and sent a message through his lawyers that he had fallen ill.

Mr Hichilema was summoned to appear at the Zambia Police Service Headquarters at 09:00 hours yesterday to substantiate claims that the Patriotic Front had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sudan to have Zambian youths undergo training with militias in that country.

He had earlier in the morning issued media statements vowing that he would not make himself available and that police should follow him to his residence if they wanted him.

He had said he would not risk being ‘brutalised’ by police and accused Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mutembo Nchito of being a Patriotic Front cadre.

“If Mutembo Nchito has run out of ideas, let him resign. He is trying to blackmail me by telling me to appear before the police. I will not come.

“If they want, let them come and arrest me. I am not on the run, I am not like other politicians who run away. I am a citizen and I am around, let them come and arrest me,” Mr Hichilema told journalists in a phone interview in the morning when contacted over his delay in appearing.

The UPND leader later dispatched his lawyers, Sakwiba Sikota, Jack Mwiimbu, Keith Mweemba and Chad Muleza to inform the waiting investigators that their client was unwell.

The lawyers provided a verbal explanation about Mr Hichilema’s health condition but were turned away and asked to bring a signed medical report which they later presented.

Later police spokesperson, Charity Chanda confirmed that the lawyers had provided the medical report for Mr Hichilema obtained from Victoria Hospital and signed by a Desai.

“Lawyers to Mr Hichilema have provided a medical report from Victoria Hospital signed by Desai that he is unwell. We don’t want to doubt the medical report. The lawyers promised to bring him on Monday 10:00hours, so we will wait until Monday,” Ms Chanda said.

In a letter dated August 8, 2012 to Inspector-General of Police, Stella Libongani, obtained by the Times on Thursday, the DPP has recommended the arrest and prosecution of Mr Hichilema if he refuses to retract the allegations.

Police have now given Mr Hichilema up to 10: 00 hours on Monday.

Mr Sikota could not give a clear statement over Mr Hichilema’s condition after concluding talks with police in the company of Mr Mwiimbu.Mr Sikota told journalists that he was not aware of his client’s condition. When further queried, Mr Sakwiba Sikota said, “I don’t know about his (Hichilema) condition,  am I the one with an appointment at VictoriaHospital,” Mr Sikota said.

Before Mr Hichilema’s u-turn, Ms Libongani had indicated in an interview that a warrant of arrest was one of the tools through which the UPND leader could be compelled to respect the police call-out if he continued ignoring the order.

“We issued a call-out to Mr Hichilema to appear but this call-out has been deliberately ignored. If he does not come, we will exhaust all legal channels to ensure he answers our call. If he doesn’t come, we will continue with legal channels which include issuing a warrant of arrest,” Ms Libongani said.

In his letter, the DPP said he had reviewed the docket regarding Mr Hichilema’s case which bordered on publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public and that the “suspect” should be summoned immediately to appear before investigators.

The letter is captioned: “Hakainde Hichilema: Publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public.”The DPP has directed that the UPND leader be given an opportunity to make an ordinary statement, not under caution, in which he should retract the inaccurate statements he made and then the docket be closed.

State won’t respond to Henry antics-Lubinda

21
Given Lubinda

GOVERNMENT says it has no ‘space’ to respond to former President Rupiah Banda’s son, Henry, saying appropriate channels are used to ensure that anyone facing charges is made to answer.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Given Lubinda says there is no need for Henry to dramatise his issue because government has a way to pursue someone who has charges to answer.

Mr Lubinda told journalists yesterday that Henry must be careful with what he says and avoid attracting attention for himself.

He said Henry should wait “until the long arm of the law catches up with him”.

“He should not drag government into what he is saying. We have procedures to ensure that those who are supposed to come to Zambia to answer charges are brought back,” Mr Lubinda said.

Henry finally broke his silence and vowed not to return to Zambia because he feels he cannot get justice.

He has instead dared police to travel to South Africa and interrogate him from there if they feel they have a case against him, following a red alert issued against him.

Henry has been linked to oil supply companies stationed out of Kenya and his name has also been mentioned in the sale of Zamtel.

And Mr Lubinda said government is giving active attention to the extradition of former diplomat Attan Shansonga.

Mr Shansonga is wanted to answer charges concerning his actions when he served as a Zambian diplomat.

Mr Lubinda said officers are currently shuttling between Zambia and Denmark pursuing the matter.

Meanwhile, Mr Lubinda said Zambia will resume diplomatic operations in Libya once that country undergoes a smooth electoral transition to usher in a stable government.

He said the withdrawal of the Zambian mission and nationals in the Arab country is temporary following the civil war that engulfed Libya last year.

HRC condemns police brutality

HRC chairperson Pixie Yangailo
HRC chairperson Pixie Yangailo

THE Human Rights Commission (HRC) has condemned the use of force by the police against a crowd that included unruly United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres at Lusaka Central Police when their leader, Hakainde Hichilema was summoned for questioning on Thursday.

HRC chairperson Pixie Yangailo said in a statement yesterday that the police should not have allowed people who were not needed to enter the police station.

While being mindful that the unruly behaviour exhibited by cadres could have provoked the situation, Ms Yangailo said the Commission felt the fracas could have been avoided had the police taken the necessary precautions to control the crowd.

On Thursday, unruly UPND cadres forced their way to the second floor of the main building at the police station after out-numbering police officers, who were later forced to fire teargas canisters.

Ms Yangailo said the Commission was concerned over the use of force as a way of handling unruly crowds and described it as “unreasonable and unacceptable.”

She said the police high command should be aware that such “brutal and unprofessional tactics” dented the image of the police as well as the human rights record of the country.

”The Commission, therefore, urges the police to resist temptations to use brutal force when dealing with such unarmed and defenceless crowds as it expected to act professionally like a service and not a force if it is to inspire confidence from the public,” Ms Yangailo said.

She said the Commission also condemned the attack by police on journalists who went to cover the event. She reiterated the need for journalists to be allowed to do their work without undue interference.

Ms Yangailo called on the police to protect journalists at all times. She urged the leadership of all political parties to advise their cadres, whether in private or in public, to refrain from behaviour that would bring them in conflict with the law or likely to provoke situations that could lead to unnecessary clashes with the police.

“The enjoyment of human rights requires that everyone pays due regard to their own and others’ responsibility to act responsibly according to the law and not take the law in their own hands,” Ms Yangailo said.

And National Restoration Party (NAREP) youth league said that it was disappointed with what it has termed as high levels of intolerance that seem to have characterized the PF’s style of leadership.

NAREP youth league chairperson Aquino Mutale said that the PF government seems to have dictatorial tendencies especially towards opposition in the country.

Mutale told QFM news that it is not right for the PF government to be allowing the law enforcement agencies to intimidate the citizens.

The youth leader said that NAREP strongly condemns the brutal beating of journalists and UPND cadres yesterday at Lusaka Central police.

Mutale however, indicated that NAREP does not support the UPND’s bitter and frustrated approach towards politics and governance.

And Mutale has also challenged the Zambia police service to use the zeal it showed yesterday to beat journalists and cadres to close up on the people that have continued to kill women in Lusaka.

Mutale added that the police have a duty to ensure that they protect the Zambian citizens from criminal activities.

Zim Womens Coach Consoles Bruised Shepolopolo

6

Zimbabwe Women Soccer Team coach Rose Mugadza has consoled Zambia following their humiliating 5-nil loss to her side in Wednesday’s friendly at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Mugadza’s Zimbabwe taught Shepolopolo a football lesson thrashing them on the day strikers Rudo Nshamba and Rutendo Makore registered a brace each after Nkokuthula Ndhlovu had opened the flood-gates just a minute after the restart.

In a post match interview, Mugadza claimed that Zambia was a good side despite suffering the heavy defeat in the friendly.

“There is no weak team in Africa these days, we played a good side. Zambians improved and they are a good side no wonder we did not score in the first half,” she said.

Mugadza added: “We did not carry our full strength squad because in Zimbabwe we are currently having under-20 youth games and some of our players are competing in the tournament.”

She also noted that women football in Southern Africa was on the rise.

“We are improving very well in Southern Africa, given the support we are receiving from our associations we will surpass what the men have done in the region,” Mugadza said.

And new Zambia coach Masautso Mwale promised to improve the performance of the team.

Mwale, who begun his reign as women team coach on Wednesday, revealed that he will recruit more players in a bid to strengthen the squad.

Jacob Mulenga To Miss South Korea Friendly

23

Jacob Muenga has pulled out of Zambia’s friendly against South Korea on Wednesday.

Football Association of Zambia communications officer Erick Mwanza confirmed in a statement.

“Jacob has a family commitment; a family emergency which will not enable him travel and be in a good mind-frame to play. As a result, we have decided to excuse him from this match. We know how important a player Jacob is and his commitment to the national team and our football. It is a very difficult period for him and his family and we fully understand and empathise with his situation,” Mwanza said.

“Coach Herve Renard is fully aware of Jacob’s situation. He has indicated that the team will be ok and will have enough ammunition upfront. Every coach would love to have top players like Jacob available every time but when situations like these arise, other squad members have to rise to the occasion.

“We know the many questions and concern the fans and nation would have concerning this family commitment. We will however not divulge any further details as this is a private family matter which the Mulenga family has not made public and we shall leave it at that.”

Mulenga was due to make his long awaited Zambia return on August 15 in Seoul after recovering from a long injury layoff.

The striker from Dutch side FC Dutch sustained an injury last November that saw him miss the 2012 Africa Cup.

File: Dr Katele Kalumba and Faustin Kabwe bundled in a police car after their sentencing to jail by a Lusaka magistrate Court

The scheduled judgment on the appeal against conviction of former MMD National Secretary Katele Kalumba and others for corruption, failed to take off on Friday. This was on grounds that lawyers for Dr Kalumba’s two co-accused Faustin Kabwe and Aaron Chungu applied for the re-opening of the case.

Lusaka Lawyers Robert Simeza and John Sangwa told a panel of three High Court Judges that they have found information that the prosecution paid some witness to fabricate evidence on their clients Mr. Kabwe and Mr Chungu.

Leading the onslaught, Mr Simeza submitted that the High Court has jurisdiction to re-open the case if the affected accused have no alternative remedy. But Deputy Chief State Advocate Patrick Mutale argued that the Criminal Procedure Code-CPC does not stipulate that cases heard, can be re-opened.

Mr Mutale notes that there can be no finality to appeal cases if the re-opening quest is allowed.

And Assistant Senior State Advocate Margaret Chitundu accused Mr Simeza and Mr Sangwa of attempting to have a second chance to effectively represent their clients.

Former foreign Affairs Minister Dr Katele Kalumba, former Finance Permanent Secretary Stella Chibanda, Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe were convicted by the Lusaka Magistrate Court for five years, four years ago.

In April this year, the Lusaka high court set August 10th 2012 as the judgment day for former MMD National Secretary Katele Kalumba and his co-accused in a matter in which Katele Kalumba, former Access Financial Services directors Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe and former Permanent secretary in the then Ministry of Finance and Economic Development Stella Chibanda had appealed against their five year sentence for corruption by the Lusaka magistrate`s court.

A panel of three High Court Judges among them Lusaka high court Judge in charge Jane Kabuka , Justice Nigel Mutuna and Judge Evans Hamaundu set 10th August 2012 as the judgment day because it was earliest date due to the commitments all the judges had

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has vowed not to retract his statement of allegations suggesting that the Patriotic Front was sending its cadres to Sudan for militia training.

Mr. Hichilema said that he is aware that the Director for Public Prosecutions Mutembo Nchito is trying to create evidence to use against him once he admits and retracts the statement.

The opposition leader has told QFM news that he will not allow Mr. Nchito to hold him to ransom as well as blackmail him.

He said that Mr Nchito is faced with the conflict of interest in the DBZ case and is trying to silence the opposition as they seem to speak on the matter in the interest of the nation.

Mr. Hichilema has further stated that Mr. Nchito does not deserve to be the Director of Public Prosecutions on the basis that he is compromised.

The UPND leader has charged that Mr. Nchito is behaving like a cadre for the PF and has questioned why the DPP seems to be talking on behalf of the ruling party.

And Mr. Hichilema said that he will not appear before the Police who have summoned him to appear before them today.

Mr. Hichilema said that following the alleged Police brutality that took place yesterday, he will not allow the police to continue violating his human rights.

The opposition leader has also challenged the Lusaka Province Commissioner of Police Solomon Jere to stop issuing misleading statements indicating that he is on the run.

Mr. Hichilema has since advised the Police investigations team to concentrate on bringing to book the police officers who allegedly brutalized people yesterday leaving two in a critical condition.
