Esther Phiri’s 100 percent record came to an end today after drawing with American fighter Terri Blair in a Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) light welterweight title fight at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
It was Esther’s first draw since July 23, 2005 that she recorded in her first professional fight against Jota Sumali in Kitwe.
Furthermore, the draw also ends her 10-fight winning streak that stretches back to May 2006.
In tonights fight, Judge Alfred Buqwana scored the fight 96-94, Stephen Okumu 96-98 while Lilian Olero scored her cards 96-96.
Esther this evening dominated the first four rounds with some easy pounding the resolute American who took the fight to her local opponent despite trailing.
Blair took the subsequent two rounds opening Esther’s right eye with her left in the 5th.
However, the toll from the long haul travel less than 72 hours before was evident with her lethargic punching with a barrage of body shot combinations throughout.
Esther landed a couple of telling hooks in the 7th but Blair stood firm.
The pressure grew as the last round neared when the two boxers lost points in the 8th for a bizarre incident after the bell when Blair landed a left shot that saw Esther lose her cool to crash a right hook on the side of the American head.
Esther attempted a late rally in the 10th but Blair ducked her brawling opponent while maintaining the momentum to a draw.
