Construction of the K1 trillion Zambia Sugar expansion project is nearing completion.
Speaking during the tour of the state of the art project, Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Felix Mutati said the project will enable Zambia to start exporting huge amounts of sugar to the European market without any restrictions on quotas.
He said the project is a result of the facilitation of government in ensuring that the benefits of investments trickle down to all Zambians.
He said the project will also enable 10,000 jobs adding that the newly expanded factory will result in 100 percent production increase.
He said the project which is expected to be operational on April 1 has also enabled the transfer of knowledge and skills during the construction period because many Zambians have learnt skills from foreign expatriates.
And speaking after the tour, Zambia Sugar Company Managing Director Paul DeRobillard attributed the success of the project to the support of good partnership between his company and government.
Mr. DeRobillard said his company is now targeting to produce 14,000 tonnes of sugar per week.
He also disclosed that phase 2 of the expansion project will commence next week.

Ok. Atleast there is some Development!
Is this the same company based in Mazabuka? Mazabuka is not mentioned in here.
How much is sugar in Zambia nowadays. Too much time in Diaspora I have forgotten.
Good although I hope displaced people have been adequately satisfied and remunerated for this expansion exercise to take off. As for the “He said the project will also enable 10,000 jobs adding that the newly expanded factory will result in 100 percent production increase” what sort of jobs are we talking/writing about here?
Is it cane cutters? Or engineers and other skilled manpower?
Please inform me also how “He said the project is a result of the facilitation of government in ensuring that the benefits of investments trickle down to all Zambians” for too much information seems to be missing here.
#3, Jamaco, it must be relatively cheap. Remember it was distributed free during the elections campaign? lol.
This is , an indicator of development in Zambia . Firstly we all consume sugar in different levels and many cadres will be employed . Engineers , accountants, production managers, security personnel, technicians , drivers, sanitary workers name them …. the list is endless
#5 Thenjiwe Stevens (Mrs) thanks for the info. Africans in general are fond of sweet tastes. No wonder sugar is used as a campaign instrument.
Good news.however, there has been an issue of sugar being more dear locally than the exported one…remember ililonga’s observation.hope the 100% increase in production will lead to a significant reduction in local prices of sugar.otherwise,thumbs-up zambia sugar, great job done.
Zambia will be beaten badly by Egypt
employment creation=security guards and cane cutters. so-called engineers will be the british apprentice, on-job trained people with NVQ qualifications. properly trained engineers with university degrees are retained in their own industries. these “engineers” who are sent to zambia are the arrogant and racist types who want to drink from their own clubs.
Can someone please elaborate what this good partnership with Govt is. I hope the govt has not bent over to give too many incentives to the company. There has to be a balance.
This good news of hope.
Despite the confusions, atleast such news brings about hope 2 Zed Dwellers.
Has Zam Sugar taken over the Nanga Farms as well?
Answers to questions. 2. Yes it is Mazabuka. 3. The mill should crush on average 640 tons per hour and make over 450 000 tons of sugar per year. 4. Not only local employment but the spin off to secondary industry. All grades. New people in agricultural, Civil, Accounting, Manufacturing, and Engineering. EIT program. Anyone can drink at any club. This is Zambia not UK. 11. I believe there is a balanace and the new Ethenol plant will be a huge benefit to the country.14. Yes but it is run as a seperate company.
