The government expects a 100% teacher turn-out on Monday. This follows the successful conclusion of bargaining between government and three teacher-unions, out of which teachers have been given a 15 percent pay rise.
Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary, Lillian Kapulu says teachers that will NOT report for work on Monday, will be doing so at their own peril.
Mrs. Kapulu has warned that labour laws will apply for teachers that decide to stay away from classes but hoped the situation will not reach that level.
She says there is no justification for teachers to continue with their strike action after being awarded a 15 percent pay rise.
And Mrs. Kapulu says the ministry of finance will soon release K15 Billion as part payment of fixed band allowances for teachers.
The Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary said government is aware that teachers are owed K42.5 Billion in fixed band and is determined to off-set the arrears by August this year.
And the three Teacher unions in Lusaka say there is NO need for teachers to continue with the strike action.
And the unions have challenged those within the teaching profession inciting teachers to continue with the strike to leave the profession.
This was said by Lusaka province Basic Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) Chairman Ian Miyoba, flanked his Secretary Clifford Chirwa.
Mr. Miyoba thanked national leaders from the three teacher unions for their courage and determination in reaching at the 15 percent pay rise with government.
And Zambia Union of Teachers (ZNUT) Provincial Secretary Lillian Nshinga, said teachers should report back for work on MOnday.
I hope you will abide by solutions to the problem and just don’t expect teachers to keep working under terrible conditions of service.
whateva
Ha wateva! Its ok, kaili most teachers just sit and do nothing. Infact they just talk. U want to be paid billions just 4 talking?
What am wondering is why are they just giving them a 15% pay rise why didnt governement pay what they owe the teachers as of now and the pay rise 15% should be effective in a future day they would have named say five months time while they settle wht they owe the teachers.Because all the time the government has been asuring teachers of giveing them their due for about two years i hear.
This is a good development considering that across the bored employees have been getting 15% increaments ie barclays, stan chart etc. And these are private companies for government to on equal footing is progress
Was 15% imposed on the strikers by their union or was it democratically accepted by the majority?
Madam PS, threats is a sign of poor leadership.
Politicians have taken Zambians for granted. Politicians are ever enjoying while civil servants are suffering with their children. You are paid K800 000 , you have three children in secondary schoool, each has to pay K500 000 per term, you rent a house at K700 000, food what else. awe bane tefyo chifwile chaba. God created US equal and all of us want good life. Not life ya pa Zed. Could you blame a teacher if he plundered? Please Lod God deal with these RB and his devils so they do not see good days in their lives. VIVA STRIKE.
#5 wait a moment! 15% at barclays and 15% in Govt. is miles apart. For example if an MP receives K25m per month and a Teacher receives K1m, and both receive a 15% increment, this maths does not work well. The MP receives K3,750,000 and the Teacher receives K150,000 as increment. This is the mockery which is present in calculating and increasing salaries in %ages.
#3 U are witting and blogging becoz a teacher was talking sense…Some us our parents were teachers and i feel insulted by what u say coz the people she has taught are all doing well though they are not part of this government..It’s dunderheads like u that make Zambia where it is now,u just never would understand even if Jesus taught u will ever be dull.
” teachers that will not report for work on Monday, will be doing so at their own peril”
Excuse me, that sounds like blackmail! African governments are fond of working with threats and that is why democracy doesn’t work. Can you seriously expect good results when you force someone to accept a peanut salary and return to work at gunpoint?
#8. Okocha, an MP in Zambia does not get K25m. It is roughly K5m and it is the lowest among the countries in Southern Africa. Get your your facts right and stop inciting people for nothing.
Number 11 waliba dull, understand the meaning of ” IF” . We mbushi we! You dont need to have facts if you are using conditional words.
The 15% increment is not really solving the teachers’ problem. The main issue is housing allowance. One can make adjustments to the amount of food to be put on the table but rentals are hardly negotiable. The effect of the sale of govt and council house is being felt now.
# You are very much right the housing allowances for teachers range from 100pin -450 pin. what house can one get from such. The majority hardly get 350 pin. Can govt shushushus despite this .
Can the OP chaps dispute what I have written above !!!!!! 314 since you seem not see true the cause of the strikes .
# 11 Nkhole……kwena walitumpa sana. Ask your fellow bootlicker SINIOR CITIZEN at the Zambian Embassy in US, we have known him what remains is to menssion his name now if he continues with ubupuba. have you ever seen him in that name? If he has changed the name we will find him bcoz of his written English style. Even you nkole we know that you are a bootlicker of Nyama Soya……we will know you soon bcoz we also have shushus here. So be careful Nkole.
That is why it is practically impossible to crop out corruption in Zambia. When you pay peanuts expect to employ monkeys. By the way how much are you giving Boma(policemen)? They dont complain publicly but their actions speak volumes. We are in trouble. UTH taken over by soldiers, is it ok you MMD bootlickers? Im not partisan but on this one iam moved.
Fire fighting tactics. 15% salary increases after strike action. Why not before? Teachers are human beings like politicians and they go to the same shops like anybody else, surely why make them cry for a salary increase to survive so that they can continue to teach our children when Titus Mpundu is enjoying himself for having stolen from Zambian tax-payers?
Aaaah! Ba LT, you have done it again. Swallowed my article because of Titus Mpundu. Can show bloggars the deed poll Titus Mpundu used to become Fredrick Chiluba? My article in favour of teachers was genuine and you know it.
The houses that KK and his team built for civil servant were sold by FTJ , most people who bought the houses have since retired and rentals is their source of income . Would they rent the houses at 350pin?
The MMD has been in power for over18yrs how many houses across the country have they bulit? who mostly benefited? Don`t we hear of one person have 10 houses in PHI ?
#11 is Nyama soya’ s son, allow him to say what he wants.
Good news for now. Know what, the percentages are so deceiving …this is most likely amounting to something around 100 to 150pin for most of the teachers.
Bwafya!!!
Teachers should not be taken for granted. They are human beings. You shoud give them respect and just not taking them for a ride. Pay them housing allowances arrears now and the 15% to follow in August. After all 15% for teachers is peanuts. Be considerate ba PS
It’s a free expression atmosphere where everyone is free to speak their mind, however some of the comments are pretty careless (#11), Iam absolutelysure that you’ve been to school and these same teachers so to it that you get the knowledge( someone said just talking) and like a few of us, are even working abroad. Imagine the sacrifice of the teachers before you talk shit! Let us be all level headed, make our deliberations much more inclined to intellectual orientation and probably make good leaders for Zambia and the World!
A good development ,i just wonder if 15 % can make any substancial difference to the teachers already compromised food busket
Teachers and others just withdraw your UNION SUBS. Your leaders sold you at Kafue Nation Park when they met RB.
#11 Nkole Wafimo fimo. You are the one who is got your facts wrong: 1) An MP is not full time which means this man can have other sources of income apart from that K5m he gets as an MP. 2) MPs get graduity which is 10s of millions of Kwacha there you cannot compare his income to that of a teacher.
Zambian Politicians are All selfish ,How can they get over K400,000,000. Midterm gratuity with this economic crisis, they should learn from Kenya, all posh cars and sell them and channel the money to the needy. Your Union leaders are useless why accept such when the politicians have set an example by pay them huge moneys and 100% icreaments to their allowances.
Please civil servants do accept what your Union Leaders have signed, those quacks have been paid alot by these thieves MMD
#3 i think it waz goin 2 be better if u dint say anything cos uv said nothiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnngggg#11 listen 2 #12
the union leaders were bribed, wat the heck is 15%.ther is 2 much graft in the bwezani administration
ba union leader Sta-nyoko.
