Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), a company of Vedanta Group has been actively involved in improving the lives of people living in Zambia. KCM Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives are bringing good results and the people participation has been increasing. The recent is the association of KCM with Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’s ‘Kenneth Kaunda Children of Africa Foundation (KKCAF) for improving the sanitary facilities in Nyimba school.

Through the Kenneth Kaunda Children of Africa Foundation (KKCAF), Dr Kaunda has continued his desire to improve the lives of Zambians, especially the most vulnerable children. The Centre accommodates over 140 orphans and offers services to the vulnerable people and those living with HIV/AIDS.

When Dr Kaunda approached Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) for assistance in improving sanitary facilities at a nondescript school in Nyimba, KCM instantly agreed and welcomed the initiative. The request got an immediate positive response because of the concern at hand. At the KKCAF school children shared one toilet and the institution did not have a reliable source of water. The pupils had to also walk a distance of almost 1km to fetch water for use at the school.

When KCM handed over water and sanitation facilities to KKCAF, built at a cost of K151 million, it brought smiles on the fames of hundreds of Nyimba residents. KCM has built eight toilets and a bore-hole that has cheered the people of the rural community to no end..

The teachers and pupils excitement was shared by the local government leadership that included Nyimba District Commissioner (DC) Mr. Alexander Miti and Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health officials. Mr Miti said that the HIV/AIDS scourge must not be underrated and some people infected should not feel ashamed or scared about their status because it was not a death warrant. Mr Miti said the Government was grateful that Dr Kaunda has remained committed to fighting HIV/AIDS.

Mr Miti said Government was ready to work with all organizations whose objectives are to better the livelihood of the people in local communities. He urged other organizations to emulate KCM in supporting KKCAF or other similar projects across the country.

KCM Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager, Sampa Chitah said KCM remains committed to helping the needy members of society and improve their quality of life. Meanwhile Office of the First President chief-of-staff, Godwin Mfula, hoped that after seeing the magnitude of the needs at the KKCAF Nyimba Centre, KCM would render more assistance in future.

  1. KK – Man of Action. Still working to improve Zambia and we all thought Humanism week was a waste of time. RB is the waste of time.

  2. That was a leader of substance we had in KK not a sorry excuse of a president we have in RB and his ensemble of clowns. Long live father of the nation!

  3. it’s easier to give only K151 M than to give severals hundred millions of US $ to zccm-ih…

with big benefits, VEDANTA and FIRST QUANTUM MINERALS still steal zambia and pay only very small dividends to ZCCM (1 per cent for 20 per cent)

do not be deceived by the small sums of money given by Vedanta while in the same time a thousand times more is not given

  4. KELIZ…and this is why no matter how much we hated some of the $hyt you put us through, we still can atleast respect you for trying to do something no matter how small, for the people. May God continue to bless you and hope mama Betty bounces back soon. Where is ka Kafupi? Busy chewing the money he stole and not even trying to pretend…ka mambala iwe kachikamba. Ba KK, inspite of your bull$hit, I applaud you mudala. keep up the good work. RB, I hope you just bolt from Zed after 2011, you may have to. it’s not looking good for you man. Monkies ahve been at State House since it was built….not incident of a monkey pissing on anybody not even the ka garden boy. Now you have a monkey piss on your big head and you chase them out from their home too? You will pay RB, you will pay.

  5. Useless Cooperate Image,It’s all bull shit,KCM has failed to provide its employees at the so called new smelter with sanitary facilities, employees do urinate on dark corners,4 da past 1 year en sum months KCM did not provide its 400 plus employees with toilets and it was jst resently when a poorly constructed change house was built, the sad part is that this same change house has been shut down”barricated” bcoz fieces used to flow every where, and here they are, boostin of K151 Million sanitary facility!Ta twakwata ukwa kunyela.

  6. We should atleast learn to appreciate small beginnings. This KK unlike kafupi is making a difference in many suffering Zambians. we should start to appreciate these small beginingsx and have these corparate institutions accountable socially.

  7. Why Nyimba particularly? Is this to please Nyama Soya? Lamba land is where all the wealth is coming from, mind you KCM.

  8. This is clearly window dressing. These mining companies are a rip-off. By the way, if KK stood against all these jokers don’t you think he can beat them all?

  9. Nomba elyo awama Kaunda? Where were all these supporters when the poor old man was being insulted by Kafupi and Company? The Zambian people listened to the lies from the Post in 1991 and a caricature of a President came into power. I hope that this time round, sanity and pragmatism prevails, otherwise we will be like Italy, changing leaders like underwear!

  10. I swear president Rupiah Banda of Zambia “ali na ntenda ya chiwewe”, otherwise he would realise this country cannot afford the opportunity cost of buying cars for these good for nothing chiefs. You bet he wants to use them as his campaign agents come 2011 polls, but hardly does he realise apart from his AIDS ravaged rapist Chief Mpezeni, most if not all other chiefs in Zambia are not customary allowed to speak in public. When hospitals and schools are so grossly underfunded, it will take a fit of monumental proportions for any same president to appease useless chiefs. Only Kanitundila is capable of such supreme s.t.u.p.i.d.i.t.y.

  11. Wow!!!!!!!! Thus my former school area. Its a joy to ssee what a leader we have in KK and KCM .
Am certain that this development has brought joy to the Nyimba residents. If you ve been there you will agree with me . Nyimba is one town in Zambia that feels like you are in rural Mozambique.

  12. KK! Thats very kind of you. You have proved to be a Great leader. No Matter what names we called you and did to you, you are ever ready to work for Mother Zambia. Keep it up. God you always bless you. Advise Chiluba to emulate you not by not being a cadre for RB. As a former president, You still have to continue helping the country now him and RB are dividing us. Go Go Go! KK. We love you!

  13. “Mr Miti said Government was ready to work with all organizations whose objectives are to better the livelihood of the people in local communities.”

I suppose RB spends more than K151m every time he travels. Please RB and Govt, tax money is not for your enjoyment only, lift the living standards of Zambians.

KK thanks for your help. KCM thank you for assisting.

Those complaining about toilets at KCM please find out what the MUZ is doing about it. They could be sleeping.

#10 The SAINT “The Zambian people listened to the lies from the Post in 1991 and a caricature of a President came into power”. It may be that the POST tells lies even today. If so consider them a trash newspaper. Why listen to a liar. The Devils is a liar, isn’t he, Christians dont listen to him.

  14. It is true pipo are born leaders not made leaders. Selfless hard work for the pipo, as a servant for thr pipo. Were is ka chiluba, bussy dreassing in suits and demanding his so called $8M.

KK is repected world wide. I love KK. You are a true insparation for our country. May God bless you.

  15. Hi guys, these some sad but very true article i came across on some blog. An american commented about zambia and its people. The guy wrote things that we as zambian have actually being missing all along. anybody interested can send me their email add to royalgold at vodamail dot co dot za. Its shocking but sadly true

    Data Protection.

Just cut and paste ecepts from teh article onto the blog. Mention the source to avoid plugiarism.

    We are waiting.

  17. we are tired of KCM trying to impress the whole country yet forgeting its hard working employees. these guy made 190m US dollar profit last year

  18. Greeetings everyone!
Some positive news to end the working days and start the weekend. Only real patriots appreciate what Dr. Kaunda has and is still doing for the nation. May The Lord add many more days of health and strength to his life too. Maranatha.

  19. The best president Zambia had…he had his flaws but he tried. God bless Him. He was president when he was 40. He cared about educating Zambians. I hope more young people are ALLOWED to take part in politics who have a heart to improve the livelihood of ALL Zambians .

  20. Good work KK . Actions speak louder than words. Zambians need to realise it takes a village to raise a child. (I equate a child to Zambia in this scenario and the village the people). To make a difference the Zambian people need to change their way of thinking. Everything is about “ME “syndrome needs to change …..especially amongst our Zambian political leaders.

  21. I agree with no 5.KCM must begin to focus on issues that affect morale of their hard working and committed employees. These guys have completely failed to run the CompanyThey are bringing in more and more Indians who have no clue on the operations. It is high time KCM hired a technically competent CEO who can add value, instead of one who spends time on meetings that are not productive. The Company seriously needs a competent CEO.It is suffering because of bringing people who are not qualified and do not understand the operations, instead you have a CEO who spends three quarters of his time on useless meetings which do not add value.KCM should also pay more attention to the concerns of the employees.Zambians in KCM are knowleadgeable and can turn around the operations if properly motivated .

  22. Why Nyimba and not Chinsali.Anyway at least Ba KK you are working for mother Zambia instead of Chiluba and Banda. We thank you for having built the schools and hospitals.
We must thank you .Greet Mama Betty and wishing her well.

  23. Well done KK,but please tell KCM to clean up the mining townships and buy medicine for their hospitals. They have neglected the mining towns which look so dirty now.Sosa Sosa bakakunfwa.
