Mpombo refutes dark corner meetings

Share

FORMER Minister of Defence, George Mpombo has denied allegations by Government that he has been holding dark-corner meetings with some diplomats.

Mr Mpombo said the allegations have no basis to show his involvement.

He said in an interview yesterday that remarks by Government Spokesperson Lieutenant-General Shikapwasha are aimed at destroying his character.
“I will not be shaken because at no time have I held such disgraceful meetings,” Mr Mpombo said.

He challenged Gen Shikapwasha to produce evidence to show that he has been holding dark-corner meetings.
Mr Mpombo said he is a patriotic Zambian and that he has the interest of the nation at heart.

“I was prompted to comment on the issue of the donor community because I saw that it was getting out of hand and that a solution was needed,” he said.

Mr Mpombo urged Government to bring back the foreign policy that will only give leeway to the Minister of Foreign Affairs to comment on issues that border on foreign policy.

“As it is now, any Government minister has the privilege to issue statements regarding foreign policy issues,” Mr Mpombo said.

On Tuesday, Government accused Mr Mpombo of being one of those allegedly holding secret meetings with some diplomats with a view to bring down Government.

Gen Shikapwasha said the State is aware that Mr Mpombo is being used to destabilise Government.

He said Government is aware that Mr Mpombo is being used to destabilise Government.

“As Government, we are fully equipped with information regarding Mr Mpombo as being one of our former senior Government officials holding dark-corner meetings so that people can rise against the MMD Government,” Gen Shikapwasha said.

Gen Shikapwasha said Mr Mpombo has no interest of the nation at heart but is out to promote his own agenda.
He advised Mr Mpombo to stop issuing comments on issues of diplomacy because he understands little or nothing about the subject.

“Mr Mpombo has never worked in a foreign mission for him to issue statements that Government must be careful with donors,” Gen Shikapwasha said.

He said Government is only safeguarding the interest of all citizens and not to be in conflict with donors.

Gen Shikapwasha said Government is going to abide by the Geneva Convention by resolving contentious issues with diplomats accredited to Zambia amicably.

  1. go on and sue their a.s.s.e.z Mpombo, unles its true!!! thats a serious allegation and amounts to treason, plotting against you own country….chimbwi pakulila ninshi pali eko ashintilile amatako

  2. Our leaders have even guts to be exchanging accusation through the Press yet they meet at Parliament as the seating session is on. What a shameful of commuicating. We need more answers to the many problems Zambia as a country is facing. It appears Kabinga Pande is not doing his job to the fullest or he would like to please his boss by taking a low profile on the accusations labled against the diplomats especially the British High Commissioner. We need level headed men and women in GRZ who will talk hard based on real facts and not assumptions.Already our health sector is bleeding to death and we the poor are the hardest hit. When they fall in even a mere cold they go to South Africa for specialised treatment.

  3. Why has Mpombo become a hero all of a sudden? Does it mean that anybody who fails to work in govt or has a diffrent opinion to that of govt is a hero?

Ba Zambia, muza paya your own country with your own rantings!

  4. Agreed with #10. All of a sudden Mpombo is a hero! A year or so ago he was considered as Mwanawasa or RB stooge.

  5. Mpoombo knows alot of rot things in MMD no wonder they want to silence him.Coming to 2011 the new constitution should allow the running mate rule to be implemeted atleast this will help the PACT, then if this work out let SATA start , then HH last but if the degree issue comes on board then HH comes in first and then SATA let him concetrate on the degree for the next five years and rule this country last,do not worry about age god bless mother zambia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Just arrest him and charge him with treason you foolish man dont waste our time and also visit your area keembe no developmental projects going on justing ranting in lusaka swebo katupenga ansala buluya ubo we shikapwaha chishono

  7. MMD CAME TO POWER BY USING FOREIGN MONEY FOR THEIR ELECTION CAMPAINS IN 1991. KATELE BEING THE ONLY REMAINING ORIGINAL MMD MEMBER I CHALLENGE YOU TO REFUTE THIS. LET MPOMBO ALSO DO WHAT EVER HE CAN TO UNSEAT MMD.

  8. Mpompo is right, any kambwanga MP or minister can issue matuvi foriegn affaires statments. PLM used to sack such *****s. Now we dont even see RB , he is either globtroting or attending traditional ceremonies. He is such a weak presido. Even if it takes voting for HH and Sata in 2011 just to bring some sort of normality to this GRZ, i will vote for them. In the mean time i am sending postal oder manee to those NGOs protesting FJTs re-intoduction into GRZ.

  9. We need many more Zambians like Hon Mpombo who can stand up and speak for the many concerned citizens. Many people are scared to talk and are just concerned about immediate needs like jobs. Well done Hon Mpombo for the good work. Every Zambian has the right to participate in matters affecting their future as long as it is within the law.

  10. Mpombo resigned late. He should have resigned on the 2nd of October 2005 when he mismanaged our energy sector causing a wide spread fuel shortage. He is incompetent and not fit to be a minister. These are the remains of Levy’s “yes” men!

Zambian opposition demands energy minister resign
Zambia’s opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has called for the resignation of Energy and Water Development Minister Geroge Mpombo as acute fuel shortage hit the southern African country for second time in two months.

FDD spokesperson Charles Banda told the official Zambia News Agency that Mpombo should relinquish his ministerial position for failing to tell the nation the truth about the fuel crisis in the country.

He said Mpombo is fond of saying all was “well” when things are not well in the country.

Mpombo has continued to give people false hope by repeatedly saying fuel would flow into the country, but the situation has not improved, he…

  12. The latest fuel shortage started two weeks ago and is getting worse and worse by the weekend. Filling stations across the country are either run out of fuel or sieged by long queues of vehicles.

The fuel shortage has reportedly paralyzed businesses in some parts of the country. Illegal dealers are said to be selling petrol at over two US dollars per liter, twice the normal price.

Government has blamed the shutdown of the country’s only refinery in Ndola, Copperbelt Province for the fuel crisis.

Zambia suffered a major fuel shortage in July and August when Indeni was shut down in mid-July for maintenance work.

The refinery resume production in August, only to be shutdown again in late September.

Economists have said that the constant fuel shortages will cost the…

Energy Minister Mpombo said the technical problem at Indeni has been solved and that it is waiting for the arrival of Naphtha from Kenya to start up the refinery. Naphtha is a chemical crucial for the start up of refinery.

“We anticipate that by the end of next week, we will have received the chemical because we are hauling it by road from Kenya,” he said.

  14. Leave Mpombo Alone.. Go read the full article on ww.post.dpwn.com .. LT ha knit-picked what Mpombo said.. neway.. My respect for him is growing. Im beginning to se what LPM saw in him when we called for him blood during the fuel stock out period in 2005. Ninshimbi Mudala Uyu.

  15. Mpombo on Shikapwasha – “he is a pathological liar who is showing signs off advanced symptoms of serious political meningitis!” Post October 8 2009 edition.Iinformation ministers are always all the same – blindly towing their bosses line, remember that chap in Iraq who kept denying reality that the US led coalition tanks where in Baghdad until he saw one in his yard that come to arrest him! MMD the writing is on the wall – its about time you packed and moved to the Opposition benches!

  16. It appers the likes of failed generals like Shikapwasha are now chasing the wind which they cant catch. One would wonder how these guys have been running our public affairs if they can be exchanging words through the press. Parliament in is in session and these men meet day day out. There is just to much rubbish talk coming out of the mouths of these leaders. Mike and Ronnie are now behaving like the kaponyas. Mpombo gave his reason for resigningnhis Ministerail and NEC position in Monze. Now that he is free from collective responsibiity let the man air his frustrations freely. THere is no need to cause public alarm. No wonder when Captain Solo and group went into action Ron was nowhere near FTJ. RB should caution this man. Zambia is not only for politicians but for all of us dead or live

  17. I heard Mpombo on a MISA radio programme this morning. Before this I had given him the benefit of doubt as to his reported statements. Today though I was shocked at the depth of his shallowness. He talked about RB not deserving the MMD presidency because Levy retrieved him from his farm. Mpombo seems to have conveniently forgotten that this is not without precedent and actually one can safely say that this is MMD culture now. Remember Levy was also woken from slumber? The MMD objective is to pick the leader to win it elections and not following hierarchy and length of service in the party. Whoever is Mpombo’s paymaster(s) must have more money than brains, you cannot win your battles with Mpombo’s senseless, loud and foul mouth.

  18. Jonas Savimbi incarnate (Mpombo) knows how government operates. He was defence minister. He did it deliberately to pretend that he was holding dark corner meetings so that he may be caught, but not really guilty: just to embarass the govt.
