CBU students run amok, smash vehicles

FLASHBACK: Copperbelt University students listening to speeches by union leaders

COPPERBELT University (CBU) students on Saturday evening smashed two motor vehicle windscreens in a rumpus that followed a power outage.

Copperbelt University Students Union president, Mark Munafumpa and police told the Times in Kitwe yesterday the unruly behaviour was sparked by a disruption in electricity supply.

Campus security personnel apprehended two students in the confusion that happened between 19:00 hours and 21:00 hours.

Mr Munafumpa said shortly after electricity went off, some students ran amok and
went to Jambo Drive where they started throwing missiles and caused commotion among motorists.

He, however, said it was yet to be established whether the protest was actually sparked by the power outage or the students took advantage of the darkness to air their grievances over irregularities in meal allowance payments.

“I am made to believe that protest was over the issue of meal allowance and not the power outage because there are some omissions in payment of the allowances,” he said.

He some motorists were stoned although he could not tell how many vehicles were involved and the extent of the damage caused.

“On behalf of the union, we condemn the students’ action. Their behaviour was not necessary at all,” Mr Munafumpa said.

And police said two vehicles had their windscreens smashed by the students, and that no arrests were made.

CBU registrar Allan Ilunga said some students had not been paid their meal allowances.

Mr Ilunga said the affected students were either those who had not submitted their bank account numbers or those who had given wrong information.

  1. I suppose these riots are now a yearly issue. I dont agree with the violence but in some way the violence gets the necessary attention.

  2. close the school arrest the ringleaders and stiffen rules further. treat those brats like secondary school pupils thats what they deserve. smashing cars of taxpayers who pay for their education

  3. imwe ba koswe why do u rush to condemn students n 4getn the root cause…mulifipuba,u think every1 is well as u..be reasonable.

  4. Kindly consider the innocence of the owners of the cars that were stoned, imagine if a lady driver with a bbby in the car is hit and goes off the road, overturns and is injured or killed. Must innocent citizens suffer because of a power cut at CBU. Our electricity supply is sporadic and we all know that. The students are supposed to be intellectuals but act like lunatics.. like kaponyas!

  5. ok ba monk mwachilamo ifyabupuba their better ways in resolving such issues than resorting to violence..you guyz are now taking advantage of thing in the name of not living well or ommissions of meal allowances,am a student like u but i dont ever dream of throwing a stone at some ones car for not getting a room or bc..guyz lets change coz our riotuos behavour is been passd on to generations which is not a good sign ama viva kale ya amba…lets stop it now…!!!!

  6. One wonders why even the NCC think of saying a degree is a qualification for one to be president because what i see is senseless people using worng means of rersolving issues. What a school and you think these are the people to rule Zambia with such behavoiur sure.

  7. Are these the same people who will lead us after getting their so called degrees. Please God have mess on these kaponyas.

  8. Wrong way of reacting to problems.. If they pay electric bills to suppliers, they should go straight to the electrical suppliers to register their complaints. Pay for repair to the damaged cars plus grivance caused to the owners. Those car owner may also experience power blank.. Violence bleeds violence punish those caught in the act. vandalism costs alot of monies and hinders development.

  9. If you have passed through CBU or UNZA you will know what to say about this situation, otherwise just shut up!

  10. Dr musonda is a free soul after shooting someone.Unless you have not gone throught university,u will never understand life at campus.

  11. #15mmmm ubufi whats so special about unza cbu they are schools just like any other. why shud you become a rogue when you go to campus. does that explain why you are in UK

  12. KK called students as natural rebels. Bar them from expressing their views in the right channels and you’re calling for trouble. I’ve been there & I’ve done that!

  13. Yashani ba monk naba moma ukuchivivula so !!!!! Student life yachabe we also had our time so i guess they are just doing what us their elder brothers used to do.

  14. I suppose most of the bloggers who are condeming the students are either:
    1. Not graduates, ifikopo
    2. Graduates from abroad who are coming from well to do families or otherwise
Any one who has been to UNZA OR CBU knows the hardship students face. Government does not take seriously negotiations or light talk, you always have to force the money out of them. Is it the first time students are complaining of late allowances? Not only in Zambia but also students under G.R.Z abroad face the same problems. Not to mention civil servants who go on strike regularly as well!

  15. kabiyeni kuma upstairs colleges in cairo road.leave unza n cbu to those who ve bn there…after all thats where the sharp are, cowards buy degrees…nsimbi ni nsimbi olo tikumenye libwe ku roadside…

  16. Thats the difference between CBU & UNZA/HONE. The latter, riots over more senseble issues but CBU just always shows some empty grey matters unleashing their lunacy! They cant protest over national issues and yet they are the future leaders? While! leaders in the making! Thumbs up to UNZA/HONE.

  17. Funding of higher education in Zambia has failed. There’s need to face reliality and commercialise higher education and all this thuggery will stop! Let all students pay commercial fees for higher education by giving their parents/guardians loans. For students with no parent/guardian able to get a loan, let the stdent be given a loan in own cognisance. End the GRZ Bursary and let universities determine fees.

  18. It is really sad that our brothers and sister are still facing the same issues we had faced years ago. As a former CBU I can honestly sit here and condenm the Jambo but if Jambo is the only way the govt understand and for years they have not changed, how do we expect the students to change?

I am really sad and ashamed about our government and its concern for the citizen of Jambo and Great East Road. If the govt really love the people, this problem should have been resolved many years ago.

May be it is time, we (former graduates) helped our brothers and sister in finding a better way of resolving issues. Apology to the innocent citizen in Jambo. Perpheps its time we worked together and address this problem with the goverment.

  19. # 23,Let me remind you that HONE IS A COLLEGE AND CBU A UNIVERSITY.PEOPLE AT HONE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH POINTS TO GO TO CBU.SO HONE IS A NONE ENTITY HERE.COMING TO UNZA, THE LARGEST SCHOOL THERE IS EDUCATION,FOLLOWED BY HUMANITIES ETC,ETC. THE CUT OFF POINTS FOR THESE PROGRAMS ARE LOW,ONLY FEW PROGRAMS PA UNZA ARE COMPETITVE. CBU IS MORE OF A TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY FORMERLY CALLED ZIT,ADMISSION IS PROGRAM WISE AND NOT SCHOOL WISE LIKE UNZA AND IT HAS LESS CLOSURES.DURING MY TENURE AT C.B.U, THE BEST GUYS FROM HILLCREST,D.K AND OTHER SCHOOLS CAME TO C.B.U.RECENTLY THE RATINGS OF UNZA HAVE DROPPED SHARPLY AND MANY LECTURERS EVEN PREFER TO COME AND TEACH AT C.B.U.CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF.SO DO NOT OPEN YOUR MOUTH IF YOU HAVE NOTHING SENSIBLE TO CONTRIBUTE!

  20. # 23 georgebush,I wouldn’t be surprised if you were denied admission @ C.B.U. Also I do not think you are a U.N.Z.A graduate, most probably you are from Evelyn Hone and trying to hide behind U.N.Z.A. Tough luck boi, you can still try as a mature, there are enough places, just hope you will not fail!

  21. Achimwemwe, you are missing the whole wide point. I was at UNZA and my sister is at CBU. HONE, ya but i must also tell you that Hone has produced most of your famous journelists pa Zed. Including Dr Luo. Wamvela.
For CBU, tell me which constructive national issue did they ever protest on? Heee! Just becuase you are from CBU does not mean you must say what you dim right. Its one thing to be from there and another to be who you are collectively as students.
I rest my case. Congratulations though for being there even if you think all those in colleges and universities are more intellegent than those that have never been ther-for example FTJ is intelligent as well as Sata but look where SIKOTA is? Just bootlicking! So, refering to canongobility is just overshadowing the issue at hand.

  22. Police, what do you mean saying no arrests have been made? Campus security apprehended two of these hoodlums. Lock them up and follow it through with charges, these thugs belong behind bars!!!

  23. # 26-Being at CBU or UNZA does not make anyone more intelligent or special by any means. There are a lot of pipo from evelyn hone college who ended up there because of circumstances. Some coz they had no bursaries hence opted not to go there while others coz they were at campus and but loved partying of their days hence failed their exams(learning the hard way).Mind you not everyyone can go to unza because of limited capacity.you should agree with me also that there isa big chunk of students that have also gone there not on merit, but because they have good connections.By the way there a lot big brains in the diaspora doing wonders where they are who are products of zambian colleges including those in cairo road.Bola panshi.

  24. #26 Dont take things personal. You are trying to tell us that CBU is best institution currently in Zed. Please give us more details. And why are you so negative about Hone? I went to UNZA but some of my friends who went to Hone due to LIMITED places at Zambian universities are doing far much better than me. How can you explain that? ZCCM sent guys to UK and other countries, where do you fit them? Mr. CBU you need to analyse the problems your institution is facing and see how best you can help our country to avoid such to occur in future.

  25. Am glad reasonable people came to my rescue. In our day and age-a university blagging or rioting over things like electricity is beyond the mind. I pay for electricity everyday home but i do not always have power all week long. In any case, there are more children from rich and well connected burries on the barsaries than there are from poor ones. Actually, after going through university-i would tell you that there is nothing special but copying assignments, some of which have already been done by guys gone by. As long as you are uptpo date then ukapasa. Many girls there are making it because of shagging lecturers like pigs or chickens.
There are national issues at hand in which students must make their voices heard than quashing someone hard earned car to pulp. Misdirected…

  26. Amazing!!!indeed..one pays taxes so you get allowances, now you damage their property.what a way to air your problems.VIOLENCE!!! and you say you are at a university?!!!!! it’s time Govt introduced a review of fees and surcharges.no wonder our education system sucks, with such behaviour? it’s a wonder we get anything.unless you are getting ready for political campaigns then you are on the right path, but hell no not with my taxes!!!!
We will force the govt to privatise all institutions of higher learning so people appreciate education.advice to CBU students GROW UP AND ACT YOUR AGE!!!!!!!

  27. we just need more mature students and not these inbreds.futhermore we need to privatise these colleges and instill a sense of ownership in Zambian institutions, you can’t compare the pride people in advanced societies(maybe that’s why they are advanced) take about their universities,us we show it by damaging private property.those who did that damage to school property and private should pay from their pockets and an example should be set to their fellow students.
People pay taxes so you can learn new ideas and not damage property..CBU STUDENTS GROW UP AND DON’T BE SHORTSIGHTED!!!!!!!

  28. Cbu students grow up!!!!you are not prisoners at Kamfinsa prison or maybe you are in the wrong place…it costs taxes to keep you there(CBU)and feed you and you show gratitude by smashing up private property!!!what cheek!!!i wonder how many of you would rather you coughed up Zmk 20 million a semester just to walk into a classroom, your fees are very low they need to be reviewed, maybe that explains your levels of reasoning……be mature about it..

  29. Obviously, the act of throwing stones randomly at passing cars is barbaric. It was the norm during the colonial times when our fore fathers out of frustration at the oppressive regime vented their anger-though in a collaborative manner. Here we are, the oppressor gotten rid of, shall we go after ourselves to destroy our own hardwork? No. Being a beneficiary of the system in Zambia, I would encourage leaders to speak to students in a manner that discourages civil disobedience. Every car passing by CBU, UNZA or Hone has a story of a father, mother or child being supported. Let us not present a chaotic front to the world, it reflects in our overall credibility-yes even rating-which shows how trusted we can be with resources and business dealings. The best way is to change within self.

  30. These brats are Zambia’s future leaders! Gos help us ,no wonder our country is not developing. Use you brains ba kasukulu and direct your anger on the MMD government which has failed to run ZESCO properly and not hard working tax payers. That’s why people send their children to universities overseas, atleast kids here mature faster and are more responsible.

  31. achimwene as your name sounds. So are you sure you are a graduate or is this the foolishness that you are trying to bring out in the media. How can you honestly come out like that and maybe you did not read what the discusion is all about. Its about a group of thugs who claim to be learned demostrating over power going off.Maybe if you dont read the papers ZESCO has from time to time been anouncing road scheding and these foolish guys go on the streets to show there foolishnes and they say birds of the same feathers flock together so you join. What a university.atleast if they where demostrating over geniune issues

  32. you can condem these guys if you have never been there. how can you study without electricity or food in your stomach? although violence is not a solution its the best way to air your views. who will listen to you if you are quiet? VIVA BA MONK, VIVAAAAAAA……
