The Bishops Council of Zambia has cautioned opposition politicians not to aggravate the Barotse agreement by politicizing the issue.

In a statement released to ZANIS in Mufulira today, Council President Bishop Peter Chinyama said the Barotse agreement is a serious matter that can bring serious political tension and division in the country if not well handled.

Bishop Chinyama observed that some opposition politicians are trying to gain cheap political mileage over the Barotse agreement a situation he said would aggravate the whole matter.

He urged the opposition politicians to try and promote national unit instead of dividing the country by peddling their selfish political agenda.

He advised the opposition politicians to realize that first President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda was not unwise when he worked towards uniting the entire country including the Barotseland through the motto One Zambia One Nation that held the country together since independence.

Bishop Chinyama further urged politicians who were claiming to speak on behalf of the people of Western Province to also realize that Western Province had highly educated people and successful politicians who fully understand the documents and implications of the agreement.

He said the elite from the Western Province would have done something if harmonizing the agreement could be helpful to the province and the nation at large.

He however commended government for the way it handled the matter.

Recently PF Leader Michael Sata was quoted in some section of the media as saying that he was ready to help the people of Barotseland gain independence from the rest of Zambia.

  1. That is a lie….!!! Sata didnot say that he was ready to help the people of Barotseland gain independence from the rest of Zambia.

We all know that ZANIS is owned & controlled by govt.

  2. actually sata said that…he went on to say he was ready to go to western province to help them fight for what was theres……….he said this at a rally he had in mpulungu last week……….was even front page on the post……………………and that the man u want as president………….all am saying is that his heart is in the right place but his head isnt

  3. One Zambia One Nation, One Nationa One Leader, And that Leader, Dr.Kaunda for Peace, forever and ever Amen. Aima yaya.

Its nice people are begning to talk, other than just saying don’t talk. How do you solve problems if people are not allowed to talk? Zedians please, talk out solutions.

  4. Leave the lozi’s rule them selve’s and see how far they will go at this time of arror. politics please””””””””

  5. That agreement does not talk of independence but decentralization of some functions. People need to read and understand this document though my personal opinion is that it wouldn’t make much difference to the life of people in Western Province even if it was revived. It’s a non-issue.

  6. 5// The mistake made by Dr.Kaunda’s government was not to make mention of the BA anywhere in the history curricular. I don’t believe Ricky that, its a non-issue because authorities would not be so gittery when people talk about. Remember its the only document that founded our country (meant to unite Barotseland and Northern Rhodesia to make Zambia). If its a non-issue as you say, then a quick solution would have been found by authorities. However, as constructive debate by level headed citizens goes on, I am sure a sustainable solution will be found.

  7. Also note that elderly people talk about a fight that erupted in Lealui when Dr.Kaunda and his friends went to get the Barotse Treasury (about 78 million Pounds), much of which was from Migrant Labour by able bodied to South African Mines. The war involved the use of cattle horns by local people to fight Dr.Kaunda’s friends. Our leaders should be bold enough and tell us what exactly happened and how they seek to address the situation. Its them, the Winas and Kaundas who should find solutions for a problem they created.

  8. “The Barotse agreement is real and nobody can gross over it. Threats against those demanding for that will not work. I am ready to spend two months in Barotseland to help fight for their rights,” Sata said. “It is their birth right and nobody can change that.

  9. I seriously question the sanity of one Michael Chilufya Sata calling for seccession of Barotseland from Zambia. Even if its a matter of his illiteracy, unparallel ignorance, unpatriotism and brainless opportunism in desperate quest for power, his is kitchen sink opportunism. Which Zambian would in North Western, Copperbelt’s lamba land, Central, Lusaka and southern province would forefeit their Zambian citizenry to fall under Barotseland factional groups devoid of leadership or system of order? To Sata every tribe should secceed and form their own micro-nations. And such is a retard seeking for state power.Comedy must have its limit.

  10. Read the press statement of Veteran politician Sikota Wina

(1)-“Barotseland agreement was not meant to create another country”-Sikota Wina TZ and The Zambian Watchdog

And then painstakingly read Godwin Kaluwe’s insanity call on LT of Thursday, October 28, 2010

    (2)- “The Barotseland contention”-By Godwin M Kaluwe

  11. It is good that Sata ignited this debate, the man is not a coward by pretending all is well! Why were people fighting in October? Yes, Mr Sikota and the madam have spoken but then the reaction was more political than clarity! Our brothers and sisters in Western province are so passionate about their tradition that why this issue has failed to die away! Sata as a politician has right to make his stand on any the matter and of course in the process he will take advantage to secure some votes.

  12. I HAVE SEEN THE LAMENTATIONS OF OUR BROTHERS IN THE WESTERN PROVINCE ON THE ISSUE OF DEVELOPMENT. THOUGH NO REGION IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER, I MUST HASTEN TO SAY, THE MODEL OF GLOBALIZATION WAS GIVEN BY MICHEAL PORTER IN WHICH HE USED 4 I’S NAMELY-1-INVESTMENT, 2-INDUSTRY OR MANUFACTURING-3-INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND 4-INDIVIDUAL CONSUMER OR MARKETIZATION. TO THIS I ADD THE 5TH ‘I’ AS INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS WITHOUT WHICH A NATION WILL OPERATE UNDER NO TRADE CONDITIONS CALLED AUTARKY. BUT WITH TRADE IT CAN PRODUCE BEYOND THEIR PRODUCTION POSSIBLITY FRONTIER, (PPF) SO AS TO PROMOTE, INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND LOWER THE MANUFACTURING COSTS.

  13. ECONOMIC HISTORY SHOWS THAT THE OPENING UP OF OVER 3000 ITEMS UNDER WTO REGIME POST-2001 IN CHINA INCREASED THE SALES OF COSMETICS, HALOGEN BULBS, TORCHES AND TOYS, CONDOMS ETC. BAROTSELAND MUST REVISIT ITS LAND AND INVESTMENT RIGHTS IF THE REGION HAS TO PICK UP ON DEVELOPMENT. PROSPERITY OF A REGION IS NOT NECESSARILY AN ISSUE OF GOVERNMENT BUT LAWS AND OPEN DOOR TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR WILLING TO BRING IN THEIR MONEY.

  14. The seccession Sata is shoving on the throats of the Barotseland people will only plunge that part and the entire Zambia in turmoil in quest of each tribe becoming a micro-nation. If big nations like the US can believe in the union and slap treason on seccession moves, what more young Zambia? Ignore the kitchen sink mind of Sata and keep steadfastly rallying around RB and his pro development leadership.

  15. Zedians here is a solution, bundle all those that have been honoured as heroes at independence celebration into Mulunguishi Conference Centre and give them 2 days to find a solution. Failure to do so RB should withdraw the honours. Remember, this problems was not created by RB but by the father to Panji. Praise God he is still alive. Even “Mama Regions” are still a there.

  16. Sikota Wina has said it well in white & black to the press. That said, for those that are still sceptical, they should go and look at the archives and read the whole document

The only person that will have a rude awakening during the election is Sata – he has made a terrible political judgement, which I think he has started regretting, having barked those statements & sentiments about BA for ridiculous & bizarre Political Engineering

  17. Today’s Post. The Barotse Freedom Movement will be making a grave mistake to think that Sata has a solution to the Barotseland Agreement. Entertaining him for 2 months for what?

  18. Ya men! Lozis are oppressed everywhere in offices, at school, in public and now in govt. Its time the barotse broke away. Raise up my kings and lords! Enough is enough.
