THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has expelled Colonel Panji Kaunda from the party for breaching the party constitution.
UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that Col Kaunda’s expulsion follows his failure to exculpate himself as stipulated in the suspension letter of March 29.
“Following the suspension of Col Kaunda and his subsequent failure to exculpate himself from the charges we put to him, UPND has today (April 13) expelled Col Kaunda from the party pursuant to article 70 of our party constitution,” Mr Kakoma said.
He said Col Kaunda breached article 8 of the party constitution, which compels members to respect and follow the constitution.
“We have found Col Kaunda wanting and therefore liable to expulsion. We therefore wish to advise our supporters and the public that Col Kaunda is no longer a member of UPND,” he said.
Mr Kakoma said the article states that members should uphold and defend the philosophy, vision and objectives of the party and its democratically adopted position on internal and international issues.
He said article 8 further states that party members should safeguard party policies and programmes from ‘undue corruption of thought’.

The article also states that members should adhere to collective responsibility and defend their ideas and positions through the established party structures.
Mr Kakoma said any meeting called by Col Kaunda from today onwards should be deemed illegal because he has ceased to be a member of the UPND.
The UPND has also formally welcomed former MMD Katuba member of Parliament Jonas Shakafuswa to the party.
Mr Kakoma said Mr Shakafuswa has indicated to the UPND that he will officially join the party after the dissolution of Parliament but the opposition party says it is ready for a by-election if the Katuba seat is declared vacant before the dissolution of the National Assembly.
Commenting on his expulsion, Col Kaunda said he will not fight the UPND’s decision because his pact is with the people and not any political party.
“This is a free country and the UPND has a right to expel whoever they want to expel. I am currently busy campaigning for my candidate,” he said.
Col Kaunda said he does not have time to discuss the affairs of the UPND because he is busy in the field.

Just finished reading the PF Manifesto…a painstaking exercise- thank God for coffee..it is now confirmed that the PF has no capacity to run a govt. Their understanding of govt is so naive and childlike I begin to wonder if Sata was really smoking cigarettes or PCP during his “rich experience” of politics. The manifesto itself is is riddled with MMD critiques, and the “meat” of it is empty promises. Their so called solutions had to have been written by a Grade 12. But since it is mediocre, most Zambians will love it: NI DONCHI KUBEBA!!!…smh

We all agree that Panji has a democratic right to campaign for a candidate of his choice but the UPND has equally got a right to expell any member who breaches their constitution and exhibits prostitutional bahaviour. The difference between Panji and prof Chirwa is that Chirwa only made a confidential proposal to break a political deadlock but when that information was leaked by overzealous PF functionaries he(Chirwa) quickly disassociated himself from it and publicly apologised. At no point did he campaign for or endorse Sata. There is no need for Panji to use his father’s name when he can simply join PF and campaign for Sata. There are equaly a lot of PF supporters who prefer HH to be president and will only show their intention by voting or joining UPND
The way forward to remove MMD is by rallying behind HH not Sata. There is no doubt that HH has the capacity and support base to win the presidency and that explains why Mmembe is jealous of him. Sata represents the worst form of MMD, he is part and parcel of the hated Chiluba regime. That explains why he is attracting the likes of Nawakwi, Chitala, Sichinga, Mpombo, Wina etc. What change do you expect from such characters? Aren’t some of them the architect of MMD? A leopard does not change it’s colours overnight. Forward with real generational change, vote HH!!

The good news is that PF still maintains its popularity in all its strongholds and they do not need to compaign their. But they have gained alot of ground in areas they were previously not popular such as Northwestern, Western, Eastern and some parts of Central provinces. I am sure they will never get zeros in these areas again. Atleast they will be getting something better than the last elections. The 30,000 votes btwn MMD and PF was a very small gap.I think PF does not UPND to win this elections though and alliance would have been better. PF is outrightly winning this year-2011.

In 1991 KK told us that Chiluba is NOT fit to be President, we dd NOT listen. KK knows what it takes to be president of a country. You work long hours, your read long hours, u attend to different people of different back ground. On top of that u are in Control of the arms amd guns, the intellegence and the Armed forces. In case of Zambia u have fragile democratic institutions and constitution that u need to strengthen. You need also to have a vision of where you need to take this country in terms creating wealth for the country that will reduce poverty. Chiluba was former Grade 7 pupil, he destroyed the country to reach the last poorest 10 nations in the world…..now from a grade 7 u want to vote in SATA a former grade 6 pupil. This shows how shallow African politics are. Panji is just an ordinary member of the party. How can you expel ordinary members of the party. They are the ones who are supposed to decide the direction of the party. Oh, I forgot. There is no democracy in our parties. Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Barak Obama – they were all elected by ordinary members of the their parties, some of whom even used abusive language against the prospective leaders. But the leaders have no authority to expel them. It would be a bit like the republican president expelling ordinary Zambians from their country for ‘insulting’ the great leader.
I have always believed that the difficult part about selling one’s presidential candidate, like Panji is doing, is that you don’t ultimately know for sure if the people you are talking politics to will turn your talk into voting for them. So is the fallacy that when you are drawing unprecedented number of crowds at campaign rallies, then that is a good measure that you are assured of votes, no. The open secret is that the VOTE ultimately is secret, period.

We need to reflect on why UPND expels Panji and quickly admits Shakafuswa into the Party. Panji lacks a capacity to read the mindset of current UPND leaders. The character of UPND drastically changed after the death of Mazoka. The Party flushed out non-Tonga prominent leaders such as Patrick Chisanga, Given Lubinda, Bob Sichinga, Sakwiba Sikota because they needed to field a Tonga for Republican Presidency. History reveals the existence of an ethnic group called Bantu-Bo-Tatwe (comprised of Ila, Lenje & Tonga). This group conspired to compete against the Bemba ethnic grouping that Sata (a Mwakyusa) has been exploiting to his own advantage. Students of political science must take note and advise Panji accordingly.

UNDP cannot win by banking their votes from Southern Province and parts of Central province, while Western Province is to be shared by all political parties. I really am baffled by people who compare HH to Obama.Whts worse is that HH himself views himself as a Zambian version of Obama which is a big shame becoz the man is just lying to himself. HH has ridden on the popularity of the late great man Anderson Mazoka’s (mhsriep) popularity for far too long.He was even luckier that his widow Mutinta endorsed thgh b4 that he says “he was in the background”.When Mazoka was alive I never heard of the man.Can UPND even hold your party convntn to see if the man will not be chllnged bcz i know deep down Siakalima,Moono,Simenda,Hachipuka,Hamududu,Lumba,Mooya,Muntanga,Mwiimbu and especially Nkombo would like to vie for the presidency and i bet if any of ths dcde to go for it, HH is finished afterall most of these i have mentioned are original Mazoka…
