Zambezi Portland Cement gives employees K100m

Share

ZAMBEZI Portland Cement (ZPC) management has resolved to share the benefits from increased production with its employees by giving them a total of K100 million.

ZPC public relations manager Kelvin Sampa said the increase in production was despite a brief plant shut-down during this month to facilitate maintenance works.

“The sum of K100 million was disbursed to the employees in this profit share initiative. In addition, management decided to award the employees a 30 percent advance payment on their April salaries to enable them celebrate Easter holiday,” he said.

He added that the K100 million was given as a motivational incentive that management has come up with and is awarded to unionised staff when the production target reaches a certain level. ZPC has about 600 unionised staff.

Mr Sampa said in a statement that the firm witnessed an unprecedented rise in cement production to 1,200 metric tonnes after production capacity fell below 1,000 tonnes in February.

He said yesterday that the company experienced the highest levels of production since new management assumed control last April.

Mr Sampa has attributed the increase to higher local demand for cement and a motivated workforce coupled with a conducive business environment.

“Zambezi Portland Cement has strived to perform well on the Zambian market despite being a new entrant in the Zambian manufacturing industry.

Due to Government’s commitment to national development, we are now witnessing an increase countrywide in the construction industry which is ZPC’s primary target market,” he said.

Mr Sampa said ZPC is focusing on expanding the plant with a current capacity of 1,600 tonnes due to overwhelming product demand from an ever increasing market base.

“Our current capacity is 1,600 tonnes but we want to triple that to try and satisfy the market,” he said.

Mr Sampa said the company, which has successfully managed to contribute heavily to the economy as evidenced by the hive of construction activities on the Copperbelt and Ndola in particular, is also exporting cement to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meanwhile, ZPC has paid US$14 million in trying to reduce the company’s loan obligations.

  1. Please lets us be serious k100m divided by 600 is equal to K166,000.00 only. Is this amount worth talking about. Unless your unionised staff salaries are below 100 pin then you can boast having given them K100m. And how do you give them advance payment to celebrate Easter. You should have given them 30% of ftheir monthly salaries as a bonus for easter. You have put them into problems because you will recover 30% from their salaries this month end. Schools are just opening i wonder what will happen to them in the month of may. I rest my case.

  2. They have ABOUT 600 unionised staff. Work it out & it’ll give you a meagre K166,666.67 (US$35.00). This is mockery. Nensoni iyo?

  3. The idea is very good and commendable but the amount is too small – just about 35 dollars? ZPC management could have been more generous. Anyway, as they say, half a loaf is better than nothing.

  4. K160,000 = 3 bags of cement each, that is something. This Chilanga Cement don’t know how to value in Zambian way. Learn from MMD campaign strategy, they give baby-blue Chitenge material with an agree face of someone, whom babies cry at its sight, and the people vote for RB.

  5. with regard to meagre salaries the employers pays there workers, for them, this is something to talk about.
     IWE, TAIPASHILE  IYO.

  6. What counts is the thought! Well done ZPC!! I hope Chinese/Indian owned mines & companies can also motivate their employees in a similar manner!!

  7. Ifya bupuba fyekafyeka. Iwe ka Kelvin Sampa former Mooncity breakdancer, you should know what things are newsworthy, stan your call !

  8. Stupid bloggers! Somne of you have never even given your own workers 50pin bonus and your busy criticidsing. Atleast a 100pin! Silly fools keep hating. Some of you don’t even have 50pin in your own pockets. Busy bloggin in hunger. Awe. I’ve neva seen such hate in my life. Mambalas!!! Lol

  9. Good gesture but I hope this is just a donkyo of better bonuses to come. Advance payment should have converted into bonuses. The idea is commendable and we hope rupia’s chinese investors can learn a thing or two here.

  10. Stupidity lies in the masses…………….How on earth can somebody fail to appreciate the gesture? It does not neccesarily mean they should share the loot you i.diots, the money can be used for purchase of labour day awards, sports day, womens day etc.PF cadres no brains.

  11. if it was meant for such, as purported by Mosi, then its not worthy the effort to publicize it. alot of these companies are making a lot of money but are not sharing the accumulated wealth. A good example is in a telecommunication world where some companies are even changing their names and feel the can sell their assets whenever they wish at the expense of poor employees… its shameful!

  12. K100million to 600 employees! How much was donated to MMD during fund raising dinners, not to mention the bounced K12million cheque….

  13. [-( hunger hatred. Appreciate and go give your own worker 50pin. Then comment. Yaba. Some of you ate boiled eggs on easter! Lol.

  14. This ka money is not even worth mentioning. ZPC need to do more to control their cement dust emissions. look at the environmental and respiratory hazard this cement dust has been to the families of the same unionized workers and other residents of Ndola. cement dust is a binder that affects any body part that has moisture. when u visit Ndola, u can visibly see this cement dust on vehicles in the morning and buildings. One wonders what the environmental council of Zambia and the healthy department is doing on this matter.

  15. You haters! Bare in mind this company has only been in existence for a few years now and as stated they also have loan obligations. If you ask me these are the kind of investors we need, they’re really making a difference in my home town. Keep it up!

  16. Bonuses are a percentage of the target, so probably the only reached just above 80% but anyhow am suprised pips cant appreciate a token of appreciation, ngatamukwete ifyakulemba bafikala nikuzinkala che ..

  17. i have onced worked for the mines. bonus of any amount counts. the highest i recieved was aboout 300 000kwacha and lowest was at 60 000kwacha. at times the bonus was too low we could even just get a tray of eggs. learn to appreciate people. if 600 employees make 100milion kwacha bonus what do you expect the company to do?

  18. a half loaf of bread is better than nothing although its worth knowing what the salary structures are like this could be a mitigation strategy to a suspected future demonstration by the workers. lets hope it has been done in good faith.

  19. # 16 what is there to appreciate? This is not something making public about. Unfortunately there alot of our country folk that have set very low standards such that you think K100m is alot of money to share amongst the whole work force. Lets just say ok they gave them. No need to blow a trumpet or make praises. How in any sane mind’s person give someone 30% of their pay at easter and the 70% at the end of the month. You even announce that to the public, gosh! my country. For Sure it’s Cry My Beloved Country!! Giving you you pay in piecemeal makes it very difficult to budget for. Why not give them a 30% raise if production is high.

  20. I like this line, “Due to Government’s commitment to national development, we are now witnessing an increase countrywide in the construction industry which is ZPC’s primary target market,” he said” end quote.

This is very true. I also commend ZPC for the gesture. Most welcome indeed.

  21. This is the slave wages/bonuses  these private investors give but when you look at what they share amongst themselves you will find that this K100M will go to one boss.

  22. Another indicator of the booming Zambian economy as more people have more money in their pockets, they are using it to build bigger and better houses for their families. Great gesture by the company. A $35 you were not expecting is better than nothing.

  23. MULEKWATAKO NENSONI KWATI MULEEBA ABAICE………GIVE THEM SOMETHING MEANINGFUL AND WORTH TO TALK ABOUT NOT THE PEANUTS OF K166,000 EACH.WHAT CAN ONE DO WITH THAT….

  24. All you ungrateful bastards, pretending to care for our countrymen, if K166,000 means nothing to you, why don’t you show us some of your love for other poor Zambians and dish out K166,000 even to just one individual today. Waiting to see some snaps as proof of your generosity and patirotism. Suckers!
