PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Kabwata parliamentary candidate Given Lubinda and two others have been implicated in the distribution of a fake statement attributed to first President Kenneth Kaunda.
The source said Mr Lubinda, in the company of a Mr Joseph Chisenge, a PF cadre, and another man believed to be an employee of The Post, were spotted at a business centre at Arcades shopping mall on September 14 around 11:30 hours, where they were overheard making arrangements to distribute the false document.
The source said Mr Lubinda was also heard urging the two other men to ‘hurry up’ and finalise the document before The Post newspaper driver was instructed to start distributing it.
“Joseph Chisenge was with Mr Lubinda at Arcades around 11:30 hours and a courier van from The Post was parked at a distance and shortly, the van started distributing the documents,” the source said.
“Mr Lubinda was even telling the driver to speed up his pace as he had a programme at Radio Phoenix and for sure, he was on Radio Phoenix later around 15:00 hours,” he said.
He said The Post courier van was also spotted at Yatsani Radio station dropping off the manipulated document.
Meanwhile, more organisations have condemned the attempt by The Post Newspaper editor Fred M’membe and Mark Chona to attribute a document they authored to President Kenneth Kaunda.
Forum for Leadership Search executive director Edwin Lifwekelo said in an interview on September 15 that what the duo did is an act of desperation.
Mr Lifwekelo said taking advantage of Dr Kaunda is a sign that Mr M’membe and Mr Chona and their allies have run out of time and are now looking for ways to play on the minds of the electorate.
He said the duo must be ashamed of themselves as what they did on September 14 is a malicious act which should be condemned with the contempt it deserves.
“How can two educated people try to abuse a decent old man by attributing an inflammatory statement to him? We should have decency in our politics,” he said.
Committee of Citizens executive director Gregory Chifire said Mr M’membe and Mr Chona are desperate to campaign for the Patriotic Front but it is good that their attempt to malign Dr Kaunda has been foiled.
He said Dr Kaunda is a respected person in Zambia and the fact that Mr M’membe has decided to take advantage of his friendship with Dr Kaunda shows high levels of panic.
“Mr M’membe has betrayed Dr Kaunda. What he and his allies have done is a disgrace. They are hoping that the debts owed to various institutions can be written off,” Mr Chifire said.
Zambia National Marketeers Association (ZANAMA) chairman general Elvis Nkandu said it is a well-known fact that The Post is working with the PF to discredit the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
Mr Nkandu said no matter what the newspaper attempts to do, Zambians have already made up their minds on who to vote for.
He said all attempts to discredit the electoral body are futile because President Banda has done his homework and is going to win next week’s elections.
Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ) president David Masupa said it is unfortunate for some people to sink to such low levels.
Reverend Masupa said Zambians must be wary of institutions and individuals working with some political parties without credibility.
He said Zambians must continue to pray for the country to go through a peaceful electoral process.
