Four months after the ban of the famous beer sachets popularly known as tujilijili in the country, people are still consuming the beer in most parts of Lusaka.
According to information obtained most traders who have stocks of the beer have even taken advantage of the scarcity of the now ‘illegal’ beer to hike the price by over 100 percent.
The beer is now fetching between K1,500 and K2,000 per sachet from the previous K800 and K1000 per sachet before the beer was banned in Zambia.
Some people including in most part of town are accessing the beer although they are taking it knowing that it is illegal.
Some of the consumer talked to confirmed to ZANIS that the beer is still on the market but could not disclose the sources.
And Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Relations Officer, Henry Kapata has said the council is aware that some traders have stocks of the banned beer and appealed to them to surrender it for destruction.
Mr. Kapata told ZANIS in an interview that the council has done a lot of sensitization and made several appeals to firms that still had the stock to surrender it to the council a programme he said was yielding results.
He stated that since the ban in April this year, the council has destroyed sachets worth over K960 million through voluntary surrendering while it has also confiscated and destroyed the sachet worth K360 million from traders who were hiding it.
He, has, since appealed to traders still in possession of the beer to voluntarily surrender it to the council for destruction.
He said the council will give protection to all traders who will willingly surrender such beer but warned that the local authority will however prosecute all those who will be found in possession of the beer and are not willing to surrender it.
Mr. Kapata stated that the Food and Drug Act Cap 303 of the Laws of Zambia gives protection to institutions, individuals who voluntary surrender all such items which are deemed expired, illegal for consumption.
He has further called on consumers of the beer and all members of the public with information on the sale of the beer to report to the council or even other law enforcement agencies.
Government in April this year banned the production, sale and consumption of the infamous beer in the country.

Tujilijili back on the market because the traders may have seen laxity on the part of law enforcers! It is not difficult to trace the source, just use the same consumers to lead to the source.
