Sakeni warns Nevers Mumba against reckless statements

Government has said MMD president Nevers Mumba’s attacks on government following his arrest for alleged abuse of authority of office were ridiculous and reckless.

Chief Government Spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni said Dr. Mumba was exclusively familiar with what transpired to the Zambian taxpayers’ money when he served as Zambia’s High Commissioner to Canada.

Mr. Sakeni, who is also Information Minister, said in a press statement released to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today that government finds the utterances of Dr. Mumba irrational and irresponsible.

He advised the embattled MMD leader not to sensationalize matters and attempt to cleanse himself with mud because there was nothing political about the four charges of abuse of office he was facing.

Mr. Sakeni said the matter was in court and therefore, Dr. Mumba would do well to wait for his turn to give his side of the story which the Zambian people are eager to hear.

The Chief Government Spokesperson charged that if Dr. Mumba ascended to the MMD presidency with a view of insulating himself from potential prosecution, then he misjudged himself.

Mr. Sakeni added that Dr. Mumba’s alleged offences were known to him and the general public way before he became MMD president.

“It is preposterous for him to cry political prosecution. As a man of the collar, let him speak the truth and let him refrain from deceit and lies at least for once,” Mr. Sakeni said.

He said the Patriotic Front (PF) government undertook to fight corruption and will not shield anyone or in any way be selective but that it will professionally and impartially execute its mandate.

Mr. Sakeni reminded Dr. Mumba that this habitual issuance of reckless statements will not add any value to his status and political ambition.

He added that the PF administration has set the fight against corruption high on its national agenda and shall make every effort to confront the scourge head-on and anybody found wanting will be severely dealt with in accordance with the law.

Yesterday, Dr. Mumba insinuated that his recent arrests were politically influenced to silence opposition political leaders.

    • Sakeni should not throw stones just because he is now in a glass house. Just a few years ago, he was going to court over charges of corruption and obtaining money by false pretence after failing to complete a government project for which he got KR500,000 prepayment.

    • The Pastor may have issues BUT since there is general perception that the law enforcement in Zambia has been anti-opposition (eg, denying opposition right of assembly), it is logical to suspect victimization. In any case, there are other cases involving those on the side of the ruling party whose cases are taking very long to take off or have simply been shelved. Do u want examples?

  10. When something is wrong it aught to be rectified. We cannot not live in deceipt and pretend all is well. There has been rampant corruption in Zambia, trully so. If we just closr our eyes and pretend all is well Iam afraid public resources shall continue being plundered at the expense of ordinary citizens who deserve good roads, bridges, hospitals, housing and all that which befits improved or developed well-being of citizens. Every ngwee that is stollen or midapplied affect zambians individually and severally. In the case of Nevers the allegation has been there since he came back. They are allegations and Nevers should just ‘don’t kutina’. Just exculpate yourself as per your accountabilities and redponsibilities. If you ever misused cash tough luck. Put it staright, man.

    • In order to recover public money and ensure that we do not have selective justice, perhaps you could also ensure that the Government files its appeal in the Henry Kapoko case. After all there is more money at stake there, than the Nevers Mumba case which is just failure to follow tender precedures and the amounts are small. What do you think?

    • Ya well, the president tried to fire the judges who made the ruling that tax payers money must be paid back. Appointed a tribunal the courts thwarted its work arguing that it usurped the powers of the judicial complaint commission. Last time I checked Malawian Judge Chipoko was still at Pamodzi. Now this is what abuse of office is and by the way those arguing that Nevers Stole or did not (FTJ and team) please note the charge. There is no ‘theft’ on the charge sheet.

  15. True such cases have political conotations. Sata was nearly caged by LPM and Sondashi over a cressida & some other car from OP. It was Saviuor Chungu who came to the rescue and testified before the courts of law that the secret service is at liberty to offer gifts/ utilities to friends of the system & HE MCS came out clean. I wonder whether madam Anna chifungula or indeed any Auditor General will be able to testify in the courts of law that a Zambian diplomat can raise money from well wishers using his office ( beg on letters typed on official embassy letterheads) BUT USE THE MONEY DONTED TO THE EMBASSY AS HE WISHES & without following procedure. Nevers has a serious weakness for money & luxury UNFORTUNATELY HE IS NOT HARDWORKING & RELIES ON THE TALKING INDUSTRY TO MAKE ENDS MEET.

    • Nevers raised the money for a Zambian Cultural event to which Zambian Artistes were invited.A committee took charge of all monies disbursed.Nevers was not even a signatory to the account.So how does he steal the money.It will be interesting to listen to court proceedings over this matter.The State as usual will suffer Legal Costs.regrettably it is us Tax payers that will reimburse Mumba.

    • God allowed PF to rule because thats what the Zambians wanted. This is a case of The israelites wanting Saul and God gave them what they wanted. God’s choice was David not Saul but God allows things because people are stiff necked, so He gives them what they ask for.
      Thank God for Dr Mumba because he is brave enough to confront this government that has done very little for the people of Zambia.

  30. PF are just uncomfortable with Nervous because according to insiders he is splitting the Bemba vote. PF party will not rest until Mumba is replaced with a non-bemba speaking person so as to split HH’s votes. In the mean time, Mumba is enemy/target number 1 for PF machinations. Afterwards the famous tribal chorus will resurrect on UPND with the hope of staying longer in power. I’m glad Northwestern, Western and Southern MMD committees have already seen through this scheme and are solidly behind Mumba. Watch this space.

  31. The PF Govt has lost the moral authority to champion the fight against graft and corruption. Wynter Kabimba’s behaviour at the ACC offices was very unfortunate and to add salt to the wound, Sata reacted by protecting Kabimba and intimidating the ACC officials. What nonsense!
    And today Sakeni whats us to believe that his govt is serious with the fight against corruption, He must be a buffoon. These politicians can fool some people sometimes but they can’t fool all the people all the time.
    This PF govt should stop using cheap rhetorics in an attempt to control public opinion.
    PF own up, your approach to politics and governance is 2000 late.
