Soccer fans have commended government for reversing its decision to rename the new stadium under construction in Lusaka from Gabon Disaster Heroes National Stadium to Heroes National Stadium.

The Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZASPOFA) patron Peter Makembo said President Sata had united the country by intervening in the cries of the people.

Makembo said the gesture was an affirmation of how passionate President Sata was for the game of football in the country.

“We congratulate President Sata for listening to our cries, it shows that our President is a listening and as an association we are happy that the name change has been made without wasting much time,” he said.

In a separate interview, Chipolopolo Soccer Fans Association (CSFA) patron Yotam Mwanza said he was happy that the new name was widely acceptable by Zambians.

“We are happy that the government has changed the name to something acceptable by the majority people, it’s now water under the bridge and we have to commend the government for that,” he said.

Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili announced on Friday that the name change followed consultations with Republican President Michael Sata in relations to the concerns raised by Zambians on the earlier name.

Kambwili announced that government had with immediate effect renamed the new ‘Gabon Disaster Heroes National Stadium’ to Heroes National Stadium.

Kambwili acknowledged that when the stadium was given the name as ‘GABON Disaster Heroes National Stadium’ all Zambians were obliged to air their different views.

  1. iwe makembo there is nothing about listening president here! what listening? if these goons were listening people as you claim, that cj woman should have been sent packing long ago

    • but still heroes national stadium is not correct grammatically speaking. i have even given a detailed exaplanation of what this arrangement of words would mean in the article as a contribution. the correct name should be National Heroes Stadium. Please ba cabinet look at this critically and you will see my point. lets correct it before its too late. jusr one more correction ninshi chapwa twasolva nomba.

    • @Hitman
linguistically speaking you are correct… Heroes national staduim is grammitically incorrent… national heroes stadium is much better

  2. Listening president?if he is a listening mcs,why
    -still keep the Acj?
-why disobey court judgment on Rb passport saga.
-poaching opposition mps and enticing them with d/minister positions
On the expense of the poor.
    -suppressing free speech.
I didn’t expect him to run the country like he is doing.

  3. From what Kambwili is saying, it is now so clear that the stadium was named by the president in that cabinet meeting of twenty people and nobody challenged him. And that explain why the Vice President Guy Scott had the audacity to go to Parliament and defend the name because it was a child of his boss’s brain.

It is shameful that Guy Scott even went to the extent of telling Zambians to shorten the name or table a private members bill to change the name. I wonder what his feeling are now.

PF Government has a ONE BRAIN cabinet instead of 20 brains and the sad part is no one person in the world has enough wisdom required to bring any meaningful development. That is the sad part really.

  4. What do you mean “Listening president” ?? What about all the cries about removal of petrol and maize subsidies by the grassroots?? Why has he turned a deaf ear to that ?? Nha?
Why has he locked himself up in state house and does not want to meet and see the ordinary people who gave him the mandate to govern the country on their behalf???

  5. Ok English broken can be broken English. National heroes or Heroes National stadium mean the same literally. The worst was to declare disaster!!!

    • No boss. It really is NOT the same. It’s attitudes like yours that makes them politicians take us for a ride. You are too easily pacified. Docile. Never settle easily. It’s not our fault that we have school drop outs leading us. They may be leading us BUT they will never be the ones to set our standards.
Don’t try & cow us in your “yes bwana” attitude. That’s what brought us here in the first place. We want OUR stadium name to read CORRECTLY. That is “National Heroes Stadium”!

  6. That’s is very good. Listening to people’s views demonstrates good leadership. Cheers and keep it up

    • So in a way you are agreeing to the fact that the pf is bad leadership for insisting on
      not listening to citizenry cry that;
      1. the grandmother at supreme court should not be there
2.. should not be creating unnecessary by elections
      3. should not have the biggest number of ministers
      4. should not have abruptly removed fuel and maize subsidies,
      5. should come out and address the nation thru a press conference
      6. the govt should stop police and judiciary interference
      7. Membe should not be a defecto president by appointing his friends as DPP, Speaker, minister of justice, Attorney General, Solicitor General, Secretary to the Cabinet, RDA CEO, foreign embassy officials etc
From all this, then you ve a lunatic saying they have a listening president, God help us.

  7. Makembo another useless illiterate, like Costa Mwansa on Muvi tv applauded the pf and urged that they be given a pat on the back for accepting to change the name after a venomous resistance to citizens’ suggestions, what nonsense…!
It’s like saying a neighbour who defecated at your veranda is a listening neighbour by eventually reluctantly agreeing to clean up the mess after ceaseless persuasion and that he should be given a pat on the back, really? No way, coz in the first place that’s total lunacy of the worst degree.

    • Zambians need to WAKE UP they are too docile and easily swayed by such gestures….its no wonder the holder of the highest public office in the land has NEVER held a press conference for two years.

    • i applaud you small axe. Like in the lyrics of one UB40 song, you are are cutting the big tree down with your sharp critical thinking. keep it up. eh boom iyi!!!

  8. president sata te chilimba or ju box that you can listen to any time you are bored. his leadership style is comfusing utuma technocrat utwaba mu diaspora

    • Jukebox ne chilimba, too stationary.

The word is mobile devices mmmmmkay?

  9. DON’T CHEAT THAT AFTER CONSULTATION,PF FOOLS DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO CONSULT,AFTER THE PUBLIC REFUSED YOUR STUPID NAME SO CALLED GABON. IS GABON IN ZAMBIA?
UKWA WAS THINKING IS GOING NAME THIS STADIUM LIKE HE NAMED AIRPORTS AND HOSPITAL JUST FROM HIS MAD HEAD TO PLEASE HIS FELLOW FOOLS,THIS TIME PUBLIC HAS REFUSED.TELL YOUR STUPID PRESIDENT TO LEARN TO CONSULT. *****S STUPID FOOLS DIE WELL.

  10. THANKS MR KATEKA FOR HEARING TO OUR CRIES . HEROES IS A BETTER NAME CAUSE EVEN ME NEXT YEAR I LL BE A HERO AND MY NAME LL BE REGISTERED THERE.

  11. What does he mean by listening president? When the president himself has not been seen OR heard for weeks in public and the arrogant sports minister of a BUFFOON Chishimba Kambwili basically told us the people who pay his salary to hang….how does this became suddenly rosy? Anywhere else BUFFOON Kambwili would have been clearing his desk and out of the job. When are we going to wake up from this docility and when are we going to show the selfsame passion to bread and butter issues that matter not a pointless name of a stadium which will basically be a liability. We are poor because we tolerate this mediocrity of lies.

WAKE UP people from your docility!!

  12. Satanic traits: tribalistic, proud and self centred, intimidation of opposition and independent media, nepotism and insulting opposition leaders.

  13. @Jay,jay and yo minions are u the only Zambians u id iots? There is nothing good that will come from pf for u seem to ve been benificiaries of the rotten mmd’s evils and upnds regionalistic way of thinking. Bushe kumfwanakufyabupuba? Bravo pf govt!

  14. I still can’t believe that 19 or is it 21 grown men sat around a table and came up with a name such as, “Gabon Disaster Heroes National Stadium.” Chi Kambwili and the most stupid white man even defended such a name. What a bunch of human waste.

  15. SATA IS AN ELECTED PRESIDENT AND LISTENS TO THE ELECTORATE,THE PEOPLE WHO PUT HIM IN THAT POSITION.
HE IS NOT LIKE PEOPLE WHO WAKE UP AND IMPOSE THEMSELVES ON OTHERS AS A PRESIDENT WITHOUT BEING ELECTED.
THIS IS TRUE DEMOCRACY. A DICTATOR IMPOSES HIMSELF ON PEOPLE WITHOUT.

  16. Sadly, things like jayjay,Ndobo, senior citizen, notorious and team hear, are such insencere things that we don’t need in our democratic despensation. They re stu ipid ‘sportsmen’ who do not acknowledge de performance of their opponents. Useless chaps

  17. Kambwili boyi vela, ba lemba ati “National Heroes Stadium” not “Heroes National Stadium”…iyi yeve ni gonga! ikapo na futi.

  18. lf yo mission is to rubbish everything that the President does or say u are wrong and that is undemocratic.lt is a very dangerous strategy. But being evil as u are you can’t change.

    • Please do not confuse authoritarian rule and democracy. Going round arresting people you suspect to be your enemy or who speak out against you is democratic to you? intervening in to issues that should dealt with at council level single handed is democracy to you? The fact that your flag shows you are in the middle east explains your intake on democracy. To be democratic means the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them . We don’t need one man to rule our lives, we are way past that stage.

  19. ZAMBIA?? PEOPLE LOVE TO TAKE CREDIT WERE ITS NOT EVEN WORTH?? WHY THE PRESIDENT IN THE NAMING OF A STADIUM?? WHERE IS THE SPORTS MINISTER/ LUSAKA MAYOR OR TOWN CLERK?? YOU MEAN THEY CAN NOT MAKE A DECISIONS UNLESS THE PRESIDENT?? MAKES ME WONDER THE KIND OF LEADERSHIP WE HAVE IN ZAMBIA. POLITICIZING EVERYTHING??

  20. that stadium is on same piece of turf as the old Independence Stadium. So why not keep the old name? Is it because we now accept that we have lost our independence?

  21. People of Zambia, do not miss an opportunity to realize the change you so desire in the president Mr. M C Sata. If your child does a wrong, correct him/her. If your child does something good, praise him/her; in this way, you will encourage your child to do even better in future. If you over criticize your spouse, he/she will become hardened—in self defence. Unless you say, you don’t want the president to listen to you , on purpose—a political manoeuvre; then don’t complain. Unless you say, you want to keep complaining all the time about everything—another political manoeuvre; then your words will become ineffective—much like the way insults on most blogs have become ineffective because they’re overdone; so much that when I write with reason, I expect them.

  22. much like the way insults on most blogs have become ineffective because they’re overdone; so much that when I write with reason, I expect them, or even worse; I can be permanently blocked from ever commenting on this site—which is what ZWD have done. Put in simple terms, it looks like we don’t even know what we want, because, even that which we think we want, we wouldn’t like it the moment we got it. This is what causes a lot of

  23. unhappiness in many people. You wanted a name change, you got it, but you’re still not satisfied; what a way to go! May God bless you all!!!

    • If it was named correctly in the first place then we wouldn’t be having this discussion don’t you think?

  24. ZASPOFA? A simple ZASFA would work. Unless already taken but still.

What’s with the trend of misnaming in Zambia ? A sign of the underlying chaos maybe?

    • National can mean a lot of things. But we will concentrate on the one that means pertaining to, or common to a nation as a whole. “ZANACO” stands for Zambia National commercial Bank. Since it’s common to Zambia as a whole it’s use in this context actually means National Bank of Zambia. So now let’s take “Heroes National Stadium” here you will be saying Heroes pertaining to or of a stadium? but if you change it to ‘National Heroes Stadium’ the meaning becomes a stadium of or pertaining to Heroes, not just the Gabon Heroes but all Zambia’s footballing legends. In fact to recognise the stadium globally you would call it ‘Zambia National Heroes Stadium’ meaning the stadium of Heroes common to Zambia as a whole.

  25. FIRSTLY WHY THE RUSH IN NAMING THE STADIUM EVEN BEFORE ITS COMPLETED AND HANDED OVER?

SECONDLY I WOULD LIKE TO START A DEBATE ON THE NAME FOR THE NEW INDEPENDENCE STADIUM SO WE DON’T FIND OURSELVES IN THE SAME SITUATION. I SUGGEST WE NAME IT” THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS CHACHACHA STRUGGLE BLOOD SPILLED AGAINST RACIAL DISCRIMINATION FOR SELF-RULE STADIUM.”

  26. We go forward, then we go back again. I think PF should “think” before they make decisions only to digress a few days later. To some it appears as though they are “listening” to the people, when in fact they really don’t know what they are doing.

I could be wrong with my analysis, but wait 90 days and they’ll make a big decision and u-turn a few days later.

    #Bufi

    • yes, just look at the confusion that the P.F has caused by changing the colours of our mini buses. there’s no uniformity.

  27. We are likened to slaves in a slave ship urging about who has the shiniest chain on….why can’t we ask about how the stadium will be FUNDED AND MAINTAINED? So what of the other 50,000 seater stadium in Ndola that is FAILING LAMENTABLY to balance its books at the moment…what is going to happen to it since matches will be moved to Lusaka? Why is it that we never debate about issues? We are urging about a name of a stadium when companies pay for the privilege to put their names on stadia…you can call that stadium “The Home of the Champions of Football” BUT it won’t change the FACT that our game is overseen by a bunch of corrupt empty suits at Football House & we are NOT going ANYWHERE. The incompetence at Ministry of Sports is just the tip of the ice berg.

    WAKE UP FROM YOUR…

  28. Heroes National Staduim = The national stadium for Heroes
National Heroes Stadium = Heroes Stadium for the Nation

The first one dedicates the stadium to the Heroes (e.g the fallen Heroes)
The Second one dedicates the Stadium (called heroes) to the Nation

Both names are correct gramatically. What really matters is what they are trying to achieve with the naming. I feel the current name is centered on trying pay tribute the Fallen Heroes in particular, and not just Evey other Hero. If that assumption is correct, then the new name serves the purpose.

  29. Ba Kambwili Muleke uku1andila official matters in public. On 2 occasions 1 met U ta1king Govt matters in public shouting outside the officia1 parked vehic1e. Ninshi teti mu1elandi1a mu Motoka We a11 know that U a cabinet Minister, bukaponya fulu mumutwe Awe sure!

  30. People of Zambia, to understand the naming well, let’s breakdown the phrase-name into smaller entities (single words):
    Heroes National Stadium
Note that in this phrase-name, there are two nouns and one adjective.
    1. Heroes, is the first noun
    2. National, is an adjective
    3. Stadium, is the second noun
If I say, the Heroes National Stadium, the emphasis is on the stadium, which is national (its importance is country wide); Stadium is the noun that is coming just after the adjective (the description) National (e.g., a tall man, and not, a man tall). In my example, the emphasis is on the man (noun). Grammatically, the phrase Heroes National Stadium is correct. But if I add an article, the: The Heroes National Stadium, the emphasis is now on the Heroes, and not the stadium.

  31. If I say, National Heroes Stadium, the emphasis is on the Heroes; their importance is national (country wide). This phrase name is also correct, it’s just the emphasis that changes. Now, remember, a Noun=a name. But an adjective (National) is not a name but a description of a name (noun). If you want to avoid the confusion, you can simply drop the adjective, and you will still remain with a very meaningful name; e.g., Heroes Stadium, or, The Heroes Stadium (to put the emphasis on the heroes), but not: Stadium Heroes. The Heroes Stadium was what I suggested in my comment on the issue of name change (on Zambian Eye). Do you see why? God bless you all.

  32. If you still find this confusing, ask yourself a very simple question: are you giving the name to the stadium, or to the heroes (National Heroes)? If we were giving the name to the Heroes, it would be: Stadium Heroes. Do you get the picture?

  33. Aibmaz’ naiwee. It was not a favour, that is our stadium. And correct things must be done period! Ninshi taumwene ati National Heroes Stadium is proper gramma than Heroes National Stadium? Naiwe be kwati niba cabinet sure.

    • Mwansa, tekanyafye naiwe, ubelenge bwino, ninondolola ubusaka sana. Ngaulefwaya, kuti waipusha ba queen ba ku England. Kano fye ngataulefwaya ukumfwa, nomba na lyo ninshi waba nomufulo. Umuntu nga alondolola bwino, ufwile watasha. Wa chishiba shani ati ndalanda ichibemba? Ale, mune a kasungu nga nakakupita, kuti walanda, kuti naesha uku kulondolwela muchibemba. Lesa akupale. Nomba bane umbi elemba mu chi Lozi; nshaishiba.

    • Nga twati: The Heroes Stadium, it means we are inclusive. That’s why I suggested dropping the adjedctive: National. After all this is an international stadium, not just national; this is where international matches will be played.

  34. I think I know now y we need a degree clause in the constitution for presidency. Minimum for presidency must be a degree from arecognised institution, MP Advanced certificate n for councellor the minimum must be G12 school certificate! The likes of bena kambwili, Sata are supposed to be councillors for heavens sake

  35. Unlike Makembo, I want to thank all the RIGHT THINKING ZAMBIANS who opposed the rubbish from SENSELESS ZAMBIANS! No one but you, woe to the USEFUL *****S….
