Works and Supply Permanent Secretary Bizwayo Nkunika has assured that Government will ensure that contractors engaged to work on roads in the country do a better job in a bid to ensure that provinces countrywide are linked to each other.
Lt Colonel Nkunika pledged Government’s commitment to the construction of a better road infrastructure in the country as it was an engine for economic development.
Colonel Nkunika said this during a courtesy call on Namwala District Commissioner Eunice Nawa today.
The Permanent Secretary who was in the District to tour infrastructure developmental projects said it was sad that the Choma- Namwala Road in Southern Procvince has taken years to be rehabilitated but was quick to add that works were now progressing well on the stretch.
He said the Monze-Neiko road would also be on constant rehabilitation.
Lt Col Nkunika also said feasibility studies have been undertaken on the Namwala- Itezhi Tezhi road that passes through the Kafue Flood plains and works would begin soon.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Nawa thanked Government for working on major roads leading to the District saying this would significantly assist farmers to transport their produce to better markets in towns along the line of rail.
On the stalled Kabanga clinic in Namwala, Lt Col Nkunika said the stalled Kabanga clinic was been worked on by the same company that abandoned the project in 2006. He said this followed Government’s intervention.
He said it was sad that a named contractor abandoned the project in the area before completion and warned that Government would not tolerate contractors who had a tendency of abandoning projects before completing the job.
But Ms Nawa suggested to Government to consider introducing potential contractors on any government project to the District administration so that any shoddy works by contractors could be quickly identified.
The Kabanga clinic project worth about K500 Million was abandoned by Builders Developers Limited [BDL]on 2nd May 2006 in unexplained circumstances.
The company resumed work on the project on 1st May this year following Government intervention.
The project also includes the construction of one staff house expected to be completed this month (June).

Make sure a proper budget is allocated to road construction otherwise its a waste of income to run a project that wont even stand 2 rainy seasons. The chirundu road collapsing was a disgrace and blaming the engineer was even worse..Some one needs to be reponsible..Why was a lazy or rather NOT GOOD ENOUGH engineering company hired if they couldnt do a good jod. When someone gets a tender, let them deserve it please, construction is an investment, dont waste tax payers money. AM watching!
Colonel, Colonel, Colonel. Where have you been all this while for you to only realise that you need to “ensure that contractors engaged to work on roads in the country…do a better job”?Or is it that the verticle structures created with RDA are a hinderanc for you to monitor how roads are being done? Surely these poor works have been going on for a long time now. The closest GRZ came to “ensure” was only when the late President visited Mfuwe and later blacklisted the likes of Tommorrow Investments otherwise it would have been laissez faire, which it is even now. So what different thing is it which GRZ is going to do away from is business-as-usual laxity?
Easy said than done. All roads recently constructed get damaged in just a few months why?no one goes there to inspect these roads or may be its the nkani ya kangono virus.just a few roads ,chingola-solwezi road, luanshya town centre to mpatamatu, masangano turnoff to luanshya turn off.and many more.check them out not just talking, when will you ever act on what ever you say you guys?
They say”cheap things are expensive”.No doubt, this government awards contracts to cheap contractors who later end up doing shoddy work at the expense of tax payers money so that, the remaing tax payers money goes to the president and ministers salaries.Another reason, roads are done during compaign, mostly, the last year’s presidential term of office. This is corruption.Zambians we do not learn.
this is waht this Gov is good at , all talk no action, waste of space.
zambia is like the kid that never grows up! who lives in his father’s house all his life using all the things bought by his father!! we still relay on the same roads, schools, universities hospitals that unip left!! it is disgusting to go into a hospital to find the same grz matress and beddings that was left in 19 chakuti!! go to the school libary and find the same irrelvant books that have been there since independence its even impossible to vist the villlage cause the traces of the road that KK left have been washed away!! i would like someone to point out any major landmark or notable structure that current government has put up? lets build and build for the future.
