HH declares President Sata a dictator who wants him assassinated

Police in Lusaka brutally beat up and tear gassed Journalists and some UPND cadres when UPND President Hakainde Hichilema turned up at Lusaka Central Police for questioning.

Mr. Hichilema who arrived at 10:25 in the company of his lawyers and some senior party officials was summoned for questioning for holding an illegal meeting at Evelyn Hone College.

Moments after his lawyers entered into a meeting with some senior police officers on the second floor, tear gas canisters were unleashed on unsuspecting cadres and journalists who had gone to cover the event.

About ten people were seriously injured, four hospitalized with two admitted in Intensive Care Unit at Lusaka’s Fairview Hospital.

The commotion continued for over 30 minutes as people scampered in all directions with some people teargased losing their personal belongings such as cell phones and hand bags.[pullquote]Mr. Hichilema vowed that he will not be silenced by the PF government adding that he will never again turn up for questioning when summoned by police.[/pullquote]

And addressing a hastily organised media briefing, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema charged that President Michael Sata is a dictator who wanted to assassinate him.

He said the attacks at Lusaka Central Police were planned and executed by PF cadres wearing police uniforms.

Mr. Hichilema vowed that he will not be silenced by the PF government adding that he will never again turn up for questioning when summoned by police.

And UPND Vice President Richard Kapita charged that the Zambia Police has declared war on innocent Zambians.

Mr. Kapita said the conduct of the police is unprofessional and unacceptable.

  10. You can not run a democracy if you do not accept the right of citizens to assemble peacefuly to express opinions freely and to petion government for sevices to which citizens are entitled to. This principle is supposed to be protected by police. This is their primary duty. The police debase themselves when they abandon this duty and begin serving the whims of one person. This is the reason why the new Consttution should reduce the powers of the President so that only a few individuals in public positions will be begotten to the President for thier jobs. Certainly, the Inspector General should not be appointed by the President and his/her job should have security of tenure. Only then are we likely to see a professional police service.

    • A pupil stood up and left the room without asking for permission from the teacher. When she came back entered the class without knocking and she walked straight to her desk and sat down. The surprised teacher and fellow students asked her what that was all about. She said she is an independent person and did not require any permission to go to the bathroom or to enter a classroom. Question: Does anybody’s freedom override the laid proceedures of conduct in relation to other people in society? No! I respect HH, but he should stop this type of childish and unruly behaviour. Let him lead by example. Ask for permission. If he is refused to address the students, use his parliamentarians to look into the current legislature about freedom of assembly and make necessary amendments. No bulldozing.

    • The problem with HH is that he thinks he can go anywhere and do anything in the name of democracy. To a certain extent he wrongly believes he is THE president. He should take time to reflect and properly stategise for the next elections rather than getting mixed up in activities that do not add value to his presidential ambitions.

    • What happened at the police was a ploy by HH to gain political mileage. It was uncalled for – for the cadres trying to storm the police office in which he was being interrogated. This is not the way to create yourself as popular politician. 

      And by the way the police want him to retract the lie regarding the PF training militias in Sudan. He has refused. Will be great for him to provide evidence in court. 

      Having said so, I also call upon the police to be prepared for this kind of things. They should not just let cadres create confusion all the time. We should have a unit in the police who are trained on how to handle cadres in situations like this to preserve life and protect both the cadres themselves as well as the general public. It is not good to resort to beating up people.

I’m not here to point a finger at anyone because four fingers of mine will be pointing at me. First HH was summoned by the police. HH /UPND organised their support through unruly youth, who wanted to FIGHT the police just for mere ordering them that there was no need for them to be there. The reaction to these unruly UPND youths was a turning point of throwing tear gas cans to despise them. What UPND and its leadership is advocating for confrontation and brutality will not make them achieve their political goal.During the MMD SATA was gased for no apparent reasons. He never organised the youth to fight with the police. Cases of brutality, Mufumbwe, Lstone

I was speaking to my cousin, who told that, Kabwe roundabout is full of people running but not sure of what was happening, Later send a text nd said the UPND had organised the youth who became so unruly at the Lusaka DivisionHQ. The police tried to reason with them by ordering to move in the name of the president but the answered, we have no president except HH. They refused to go and started abusing the police for being PF cadres. The UPND youth had one thing in mind to fight the police whilst knowing that was the worst form of approaching the police.     Perhaps Zambia needs a pure new regime to govern and restore proper democratic order in the country. President Sata was tear-gassed when he was in the opposition. How come he can allow the Police to do the same to HH’s supporters? What were the extenuating circumstances for them to do this?
    OR did the police do this in response to the allegation that they have run out of teargas canisters? Did they just want to make a statement to the UPND? Did the UPND believe there were no canisters available to the Police, and therefore began misbehaving? Did they deserve what they got? It is sad that human life in put at risk because of stupid political competition. I pray Zambians will say NO to this pulling and pushing going on with politicians.

Uhm now what an a piece of advice, has he forgotten so soon that not so long Mr Sata did the same when he was summoned to the Task Force for those funds at FBZ, short memory ka, when it suits them.   68. Our police techniques In crowd control are very poor. If There was a clever cop llike me around I would have ensured that no  UPND cadres are  allowed onto  the  police premises by cordoning it off .

    If  the cordon line was  broken and  cadres  go to se cond flow as was the case I would  have picked the police mega phone, put on my gas  mask and  to warned   the crowd to go out or else I un leash the tear gas. ……..

  71. What HH is seeking is martyrdom and sympathy. He is deliberately provoking the government so that they can arrest and lock him up. Then he will turn round and accuse the government of dictatorship. In other words, he wants to create a self-fulfilling prophecy. One wonders if the cops of today even reach grade 5..How can a normal thinking cop fire tear gas inside a building while he is still in the same building..The cops acted foolishly but also these leaders should learn not to abuse their cadrs. If HH had gone to the police without his cadres non of this nonsense would have happened

  101. this govt is slowly losing it. why use police to sort out percieved political opponenets? HH or any other political figure has a following and police when summoning any politician should except anything from only seeing the leader alone or with half the city at the police station. A leader of a big political party has some following and this is usually also attached with emotions. Just reading at the postings one can tell PF, MMD and UPND cadres. Hence not expecting this kind of thing to happen is a sign that we have a police which is illy prepared. Dr Jere you need to learn mob control management. See what happened at the Show ground, the cardate officers did a better job of controlling the youths booing Sata.

  103. CHALO BANTU at 95. It is shocking that you equate HH to Tongas. That is a sad way of looking at things. In your own thinking are they some Tongas who support PF? I bet the answer is yes, then looking at this from your angle such Tongas are at a lose as they should be in UPND. Could this be the reason why most PF cadres support that positions in this govt should be for Bembas only. We need to differentiate a person from an ethinic grouping. This cover insulting we soon make us fail to see an eye to an eye with each other. It can not be a normal insulting people based on a tribe or punishing others more because of a tribe, offering jobs to other based on a tribe, declaering chiefs to be experts in law making due to a tribe
