Police in Solwezi have arrested 42 suspected Patriotic Front cadres (PF) in connection with riotous behaviour that erupted at Solwezi central totaling centre at Council Chambers.

North-Western Provincial Police Commanding Officer Charles Lungu confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS in Solwezi today.

Mr Lungu said 35 men and seven women are in detention at Solwezi Police station and have since been charged with riotous behaviour.

He said the irate suspected PF cadres became unruly after confiscating 12 ballot boxes from Tumvwanganai polling station which they alleged had been tampered with.

The Police Commanding Officer said the cadres suspected that they were pre-marked papers with no official seals and that this prompted police to use tear gas to disperse them.

He has appealed to all political party players in this general election and members of the general public to remain calm and wait patiently for the final result without resorting to violent behaviour.

Mr Lungu has also warned that police will not relent to arrest any person inciting people to protest or engage in violence activity in the province.

He has also urged members of the general public not to panic assuring that the police are doing everything possible to ensure that peace and order prevailed in the region.

Meanwhile business had come to a standstill in Solwezi town following riotous behaviour by suspected irate PF cadres who were protesting.

  1. Deal with the ECZ who have failed to handle the results properly. Don’t arrest people who are feeling aggrieved by this unnecessary conduct by the electoral body.

Zambians are peaceful people who cast their votes at least more than 24 hours ago, and kept the peace. If there is going to be any breach of the peace in Zambia, it will be the ECZ and their disorder that must bear responsibility for being disrespectful to the Zambians and their goodness.

We hope that decency will return to the ECZ operations.
