Parliament today heard that 12,617 girls were re-admitted in school under the school re-entry policy after falling pregnant between 2009 and 2011.

Responding to a question by Chilubi Member of Parliament Obby Chisala who wanted to know how many girl pupils country-wide were reinstated under the re-entry programme and later completed grade 12 from 2009 to 2011 year by year, Education Minister John Phiri told the problem is more prevalent in basic schools.

The house was informed that in 2009, 5,517 basic school going pupils were readmitted in school, while 1,033 secondary school pupils were readmitted during the same year.

In 2010, 5,035 basic school pupils were readmitted into school, with 1,033 secondary school pupils being readmitted in the same year.

In 2011, 5,106 basic school pupils were readmitted in school, with 925 secondary school pupils being readmitted in school.

Dr Phiri further said it is time to do a more meaningful research into the re-entry policy which came into force in 1997 to establish whether it is working and if it not to identify the impediments.

  1. This figure is astonishing. It implies that these girls that we have in these schools are not virgins at all. Another research has to be conducted on the effects of the re-entry policy on the performance of the returnees into the conveentional education system.

    • Who made you the virginity police? It’s about the welfare of the mother and child and the effect on the country if so many mothers are thrown on the poverty lines with their kids.In other words economic progress not virginity.

  2. Morning after pill has been made available at some high schools in the US. Too bad this cant work in Zambia because of AIDS

  3. malinso tell me which country has such problems of sex. it a globe problem the different is developed countyr use contraceptive drugs and lot of abortion and many cases of infertility.

  4. thank goodness! Gone are the days when when the girl child was kicked out of school for getting pregnant.
In most cases girls are victims of sexual abuse before they fall pregnant at such an early age. It is good that they are given a chance to complete their education.
I remember in 1980 a couple of 17yrs old Secondary School girls kicked out of school after being raped and impregnanted by a UCZ choir-master in C/B….most of them I’ve never heard of again. They had to stop school and fend for the children at a tender age. The man who impregnanted the girls denied all the claims.. and moved to another town to molest even more vulnerable girls adding more bástaárds to the Zambian society.
Therefore the re-admission of school girls in schools is a very good cause!!!

  5. The readmission of the girls that fall pregnant is a gud policy.my only fear is that our male children will marry second hand material. And these marrieges will never last cause the girls will b mo advanced in conjugal matters or rather romantic exercises. The girls will b complaining that they have an amatuer in the bedroom.I hope u know what i mean fellow country men.

  6. It is only fair and humane to allow the girls re-entry. Why should the girls life be disrupted while the boy continues as if nothing ever happened. This girl who is now carrying a new life gets confined in a life of poverty and so does her child. counterproductive as a whole. This does not benefit the nations goals at all.

  7. it is shame that most these girls are from basic schools, one may wonder at what stage these
girls begin tasting boys or men ,i say so because at this stage the girls look very young what
happens at the time reach grade 12 worse when they go to college.

  8. When I was in Grade Seven, one of the most intelligent and promising girls fell pregnant and could not proceed to secondary school. She was immediately married off and even bore other children whilst we were still in secondary school. She didn’t deserve it ! Readmitting these girls is a noble cause, abstinence under pressure can be difficult to observe unless one is highly disciplined. Even in marriage, little surprises do happen!

  9. Undisputed indeed, the policy is good. The only problem is that a couple of these readmitted girls do not take advantage of the second chance given to them. Instead, they abuse it because they think they are already stars in sexual matters. They equate themselves to their teachers, and even want to compete with the female teachers. It is said, ‘once bitten, twice shy’. Such girls must learn to concentrate on school work & restore their dented image.
