12 year old killed by crocodile

Share

A 12 year old girl has been killed by a crocodile on Lake Kariba in Sinazongwe district in Southern Province.

Nangombe ward councilor Robson Sialukowa confirmed in an interview with ZANIS that Anita Simalugwe of Kaduku Village in Chief Sinazongwe area was killed while she was swimming in Lake Kariba.

Mr. Sialukowa said the girl who was in grade one at Nangombe Middle Basic School was found dead when the parents ran to the Lake to rescue her. He said there were a lot of crocodiles in Lake Kariba and urged the Zambia Wild Life Authority to crop the reptiles that have continued killing people in Sinazongwe.

In September a 21 year old woman of Izenga Village near Chief Sinazongwe’s palace was also killed by a crocodile while she was washing vegetables at the shores of Lake Kariba.

The ward councillor has also warned parents to avoid letting their children swim in Lake Kariba.

  1. Sad news, may her soul rest in peace, cropping them could help. Them gators need food and so they are a danger to anyone around where they live

  2. Yes ,12 years in grade 1. Not everybody comes from a better family like you Keyser Soze. Sorry but you need to respect other people as well. MHSRIP:

  3. There is nothing wrong for one t start garde 1 at 12yrs. There alot of personal circumstances. As for the call on Zawa to crop the crocs, it will not achieve any better results as the lake is big. Perhaps the only way is to fence off certain where there are human activities otherwiae lives will continue being lost. Its unfortunate that a child got killed. The parents know well that the lake is heavily infested with crocs and to let children go to fetch water or wash on the banks of the lake sounds like pipo take things for granted. There are 2 rivers in Mwinilunga ‘1.e Kasanjilo and Muzhimbezhi there are croc infeted and pipo are very much aware and take all necessary precausion. Visistors are warned in advance and this reduces chance of croc attacks. MHSRIP

  4. The fact is indeed sad, but it happens because PEOPLE are invading areas that they shouldn’t be invading. If you notice on the map, the area is close to several african national parks!
I am truly sorry for the girl, but I really think that the people are a danger to crocs wherever they live. If rules are followed, no accident of this sort may happen. We have indeed to learn how to live with nature as neighbours, not enemies. (Roderick, Biologist from Brazil).
