Suspended Registrar of Societies Jones Mwelwa arrested

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested suspended Registrar of Societies Jones Mwelwa for corrupt practices involving K800, 000.

Mr. Mwelwa, 50, of Plot No. 13020, in Lusaka’s Chalala area in Chilenje South, was yesterday arrested by the ACC for one count of corrupt practices by public officer contrary to section 29 (1) and 41 of the Anti Corruption Commission Act No. 42 of 1996.

ACC Public Relations Officer Timothy Moono confirmed the development to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Mr. Moono said Mr. Mwelwa has since been released on a K2 million bond and two working sureties and will appear in a Livingstone Magistrate Court on March 11, 2008 for plea.

It is alleged that between January 1, 2006 and June 30 of the same year in Livingstone, Mr. Mwelwa being a Public Officer namely Senior Immigration Officer at the time, corruptly solicited for K800, 000 from Andre Jan Fritz and received the said amount as an inducement or reward for him to facilitate the issuance of self employment permit to Andre Jan Fritz.

  1. Lecy is doing a good job. Atleast we are able to read about things which we were not able to in the previous Administrations.

  2. Get arrested and potentailly lose your job for about $220, what a shame. If I get arreted by the ACC or anyone for that matter, it’s going to be for a lot more that a few beers worth of money..Not to smart Mr. Registrar!

  3. this is merely the tip of the iceberg…….numerous work permits have been issued to chaps of doubtful origin and qualifications.A sweep of all those “shop assistants” in Kamwala should be done and a check on their papers made.i’m sure their documents will show that alot of them are doctors & engineers but there is no explanation as how and why they continue to work in their relatives shops denying Zambians jobs!!

  4. Could the ACC look into the issuance of work permits? Iam sure a lot rupees and yen exchange hands.

  5. Really he should not be looked at as the only offender, get back to the roots and check all the so called investers in Zambia and get a thorough check on their permits, all those involved must be brought to book, really it’s a shame to lose a Job over less than a quarter of your pay

  6. This was ‘ubushiku usheme ne cimbala ciloca’. You see, when you embed yourself too much in sin, you become careless. Am sure ideally he would not have accepted such a small ncekelako, he’s pinching himself. Ba KUKU mulishani, akantemba kalishani
