Zambia National soccer team coach, Patrick Phiri has drafted South Africa based defender, Chintu Kampamba into the squad to replace the injured Elijah Tana.

Tana has not recovered fully since sustaining an injury in a match against Congo Brazzaville in June.

Phiri has dropped Moroka Swallows striker, Songwe Chalwe to create room for Kampamba of Free State Stars to seal the gap left by Tana.

Phiri told ZNBC Sports reporter, Kelvin Kasama in Cape Town that German based midfielder, Andrew Sinkala is part of the team.

Zambia takes on South Africa, in Cape Town, Sunday in the final phase of the 2008 Africa cup of Nations to be hosted by Ghana.

The Chipolopolo Boys have to win by at least two goals to qualify to the continental soccer showpiece.

Meanwhile, the Zambia under 23 side draw 1-1 with Senegal yesterday in an Olympic qualifier match.

  1. BBC: 1514: FULL TIME! South Africa 1-3 Zambia The whistle goes for full time and Zambia are get Group Eleven’s automatic ticket to the next year’s African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

  2. Final 3-1 Zambia (Chris Katongo hat-trick)(Benni MacCarthy). Congrats! However we should be taking care of business much sooner in the qualifiers, this business of barely making it doesn’t last nowadays. Bring in pros for the early games against the like of Sudan, Djibouti etc…, bag it in and let the locals play the last games for exposure!

  3. I’d like to congratulate the boys on the wonderful display of football. Patrick Phiri must be credited for his solid game plan. This is what won the gmae for Zambia: the physical approach we had plus a sterling performance from Chris Katongo. The decision to play three in midfiel and attack was a great one that fully utilised out talented strikers. Great Job Patrick, can we give the man his job back?

  4. FACTS ABOUT BAFANA BAFANA
    1- Their coach is paid 2 million Rands a month (285,000.00 US$)

2- They are sponsored by multi billion dollar companies ( SABMiller and ABSA)

3- Their infrastructure is world class

4 – Their budget is on an open cheque

5- Striking force in the squad, NONE

    FACTS ABOUT ZAMBIA
1- Patrick Phiri is paid peanuts
2- No real sponsors to write home about.
    3- Infrastucture none existant
    4- Talent is abundant
5- Adminstration is a total mess,

But hey we beat Bafana Bafana nevertheless, imagine were we would be if we had all the money and infrastructure RSA has.

  5. Now that chipolopolo has beaten Bafana can the critics on this blog say their piece. The Archives will shows us those critics who thot Zambia would never beat SA. The Archives will also show those that stood by Zambia even when were stack against all odds.Congratulations Zambia ,and to all fans who came to capetown. We finished the beers again like we did in Zim.

  6. Chikumbo you spot on we know the guys who doubted the team.A BIG UP to the majority of the guys on this blog who were positive, confindent and ethuisiastic that Zambia would win. What a great game from the boys.It makes me laugh when somebody said saying that Kennedy Mweene is not a good keeper,my word!

  7. Leave Patrick Phiri alone. He is a great coach with little resources and a F**** Management. We dont need an expatriate coach

  8. If an expatriate coach is to engaged i think he will need to be assisted by phiri and his entourage who have been with the team for a lon time.Zambia played well

  9. When some sceptics cried about the absence of Litana and Sichone you asked who was going to marshall the defence and I repiled Billy Mwanza nd Nkethani and I have been vindicated. These chaps need to be playing for Real Madrid. Very soon Nkethani will be going overseas, I can bet on that one, so will Joseph Musonda and Billy Mwanza.

  10. Cheers Patrick, Andrew that’s the spirit. Patrick have u seen that you ve been making mistakes by not including Isaac Chansa, imagine he was their on ZAMBIA CHAD horror we should not have gasping for qualification. The point is that learn to listen then we give you a job. No expatriate can come if you do well we ve got power to keep you in employment. FAZ sort out your admin mess!! meanwhile iyeeeeee chipolopolo!!!!!!!!!! x100000000

  11. Phiri for president.

He listens to pipo, He is humble,he does not crack under pressure, despite there being talk of him being replaced he remained cool. He delivers also.

  12. Hey guys dont be too excited. Dont get too carried away. We have just qualified..not lifted the cup yet. I still feel Patrick Phiri needs a coaching course before he can assume the task with confidence. The team took their chances very well.

  13. I was one of the people who doubted we could win the game and I’m not ashamed of it. This was based on my assesment of the team’s performance in qualifiers against that of Bafana Bafana’s (even without Benni). This is just one win and we shouldn’t get way ahead of ourselves. Both teams have made it to the finals, SA as runners-up due to their goal/win advantage prior to the game. I am a Zambian football supporter but analyse games objectively. This common notion that we can wack SA anytime, anywhere is absurd, they made a lot of errors in the game and don’t forget that they easily make it to the AC and WC unlike us. The same people above who try label anyone who criticises the team can not bet their house on it am sure. It’s highly possible that our team (with the same line-up) could lose to Djibouti, Burundi or Chad next week -figure that! #14. is right, we just qualified bane!

  14. # 15 , i am glad you have admitted you were one of the doubting Thomases, one thing you need to know is that when you assess soccer objectively you should realise that SA does not deserve to beat us.If you have watched Bafana lately you will agree with me.The reason they made those mistakes is that they are not a competent team. They have all the resources but they just dont have talent. Bafana is overated like everything else from South Africa but that does not mean they are better than us. We have the talent but no resources there is a difference here.# 14 we have to be excited even get carried away the victory was worth it.We should celebrate the team and congratulate the coach. If we keep up the fire we might just get the cup
