Foreign farmers get 4,000ha for Afforestation

Share

Government has reserved 4,000 hectares in Mufulira local forests for afforestation, which would be undertaken by a foreign consortium of agric foresters.

Mufulira District Commissioner (DC), Dyford Muulwa disclosed that the foreign consortium of agric foresters was ready to invest about US$1 million in the afforestation project in the forests.

Mr. Muulwa said another 1,200 hectares of the same forests has been de-gazetted to squatters living in the forest to undertake agricultural activities.

Meanwhile, squatters in Mufulira local forest have hailed Mr. Muulwa for spearheading government developmental programmes in the district.

The squatters, who were represented by Dominic Kayamalo, told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in the border town that the people living in peri urban areas were happy with government’s efforts of promoting development in rural areas.

Mr. Kayamalo said Mr. Muulwa’s office had been instrumental in ensuring that part of the de-gazetted forest was demarcated and allocated to the squatters.

He said this move has rejuvenated the local people’s desire to work hard and be self reliant.

He also said squatters were pleased with government’s intention to allow a foreign consortium of agric-forest farmers to invest in the local forest.

Mr. Kayamalo, who is also the district land alliance coordinator, noted that the support shown by Mr. Muulwa’s office was a clear testimony that government was willing to alleviate poverty among the people through promoting agricultural activities.

  1. The idea of afforestation is good one but just beware of “Zimbabwe II” saga on land not to come to Zambia’s posterity. 4000 ha is lot of land to give away especially in Zambia where we lease land for a 100 years.

  2. I am not really sure what Afforestation means.Logically, iwould say its the replanting of trees as oppossed to Deforestation.I have absolutly no problem with any species of mankind that are trying to replenish our depleted forests.Keep it up,Foreigners.

  4. #5 so what if zambia is a third world country? You are the same @#$|+**** who want to recolonise our country. If you wanted you could have gone to invest in developed countries than come eand “dyela masuku pamutu”

  5. I can also manage to invest that kind of money. I have all the qualifications. When did they advertise the project? Soon Zambia will be taken over by foreigners. Muulwa has a share in that land if not a relative definately has?

  6. Foreigners at it again. They will plant trees which will bring diseases in country. Is it not enough they brought HIV/AIDS. Our own trees are good and health with a lot flesh air! NO DISEASED TREES PLS!

  7. #5 if you have low standards keep them to yourself. What is 3.5 billion kwacha compared to 400,000,000 square meters of land that is 20 kilometers by 20 kilometers my friend and that is masive land. For afforestation, what is this nonsense, Mufulira lies in the equatorial rain belt and natural forests can grow there on their own if you have a strict law on tree cutting let them go to southern province and fight with the Kalahari desert as in advances northwards.

  8. #12 I concur with you, in Zambia does it mean any one from outside can bring as little as ZK3.5 billion and accorded all the incentives like those given to the mines?

Countrymen and women we are selling this country at 3 pieces of silver. Let that land be given to so many land less Zambians NOW in order to avoid the ZIM situation 30 years from today. TWASEBANA PAFULA No wonder we are a laughing stock.

  9. #15 lack odf foresight, whereas abanensu they will say we are creating a country for future generations, we say we are creatinga country for ourselves, the “tulye nabo” attitude is what is killing us. It even shows, celtel is selling shares and not many Zambians are talking about it, that is the reason why most people think investng in shares is a waste of time but that is what makes Sata money. So Muulwa is the tulye nabo type forget about his children and the country they are going to inherit.

  10. Guys why do you criticise every move. If you too have money go to the ministry of land and ask for the land. If the land is lent to thee guys for our gain, why not let them. All what we now know is criticising, what you yourselves have yuo done to this land? nothing. What suprises me is that most of the people who blog here are the most vibrate, educated Zedians, but when it comes to discuss developmental issue, OMG, it as if they are grade ones. Guys lets have a vision for our country and not just blog because we have a keyboard in front of us. Hope the next blogers will be intellectuals.

  11. #17 as opposed to your neo-classical theories you want to propound here about patronising us to do something, it is unfortunate not all of us can be presidents at the same time. try to go to Min of Lands and tell them you are zambian interested in doing this nonsense these so called foreign investors want to do and see the kind of treatment. I actually like this blog because without it people would explode. It is only that your leaders do not even spend time to read these things, they would get one idea or two, believe me. So for some of you who think 1 million US is alot of money for a country just keep quiet and bask in your low standards. Zambia needs a serious capital injection

  12. #17, you can’t stop the people from talking. It’s our country, the only one we have. The Europeans, Americans and Chinese have enjoyed their national wealth and even gone to plunder other countries when they ran out of their own resources. When will the African be able to enjoy his own wealth? Power to the people! UHURU!!!

  13. This is the giving away of the house and keys for a small investment of $1 million dollars. Did Parliament make this decision? What a shame these guys are dicks.

  14. Whats with zambia promoting international investment and not local? its at times like this when one realises that we don’t have educated people in our government….

  15. Its not about politics. Its about money. We know that they are going to invest 1 million in land, but they haven’t told us how much is being paid to the officials involved

  16. somewhere else where in zambia, the GRZ is giving out land to foreigners in the name of investments. giving 1000km2 one thousand square kilometer

  17. # 18 I concur with u. At 24 i went to Ministry of Lands so i could do a project on Forestry and a provincial officer laughed at me !! After he went for further studies i tried thrice all to no avail. Finally, someone advised i try through the chiefs again i lost my K300pin through being promised come tomorrow! Even when my bank balance was fat to invest getting land in Zed is a dead issue. If it had to take the late Dean Namulya Mung’omba to write to the President to be given Land in Chirundu for his business, what more with people like me?
