Exempt Certain Customers from new Tariffs, NWASCO tells LWSC

Share

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) has directed the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) to exempt from paying new water tariffs, customers that received water for less than guaranteed hours.

The directives come in the wake of findings that the LWSC has been providing water below the guaranteed service hours in some areas within its jurisdiction.

NWASCO management says provision of water by Lusaka water and sewerage has not been done in good faith because it has consistently provided water below the guaranteed services hours in certain areas.

NWASCO Public Relations and Communications Officer Katendi Wandi disclosed this in press statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Ms. Wandi said water tariffs must be adjusted in areas where the guaranteed service was not provided.

She said the approved tariff was based on the said service level guarantee, which indicated that the Lusaka water utility company has not provided the tariff.

“In order to protect the customers from exploitation, NWASCO has directed that all customers receiving water supply for less than the guaranteed hours of supply and are on fixed tariff rate, will not be affected by the new approved tariff that is expected to be implemented by June 2008,” she said.

Ms Wandi explained that NWASCO would ensure that customers that were not getting water for the guaranteed hours were not affected by the new tariff until the time the water regulatory body would be satisfied with the services of the LWSC.

The areas affected by the tariff sanction are Chilenje areas, Sanduluka, Burma, Mosi-O-Tunya and Muramba roads. Others are Garden site three and four and Lungu area.

She said NWASCO would continue with it’s inspections in order to isolate other areas that may be included in this tariff sanction.

She has since informed all customers to look out for the service level guarantee display that specified the service they should expect.

  2. Great job. Some people cannot even take showers when they need to in Lusaka (Chelston) because water will not be flowing at certain times.

  3. Lusaka Water and Faeces must oblige at all costs. Its too much. The workers there are geting a lot of money for nothing. Tell Father Levy please you people near him, (CECIL HOLMES)

  4. Stick to the issue at hand.

Some of the utility institutions are all just ripping where others invested and doing very little about new investments. No water no life. It like we can not plan for ourselves. Just like the energy crisis we are also headed for a water crisis in our settlements. Local Government where are you.

  5. #5 and 9, strange comments and what has that got to do with NWASCO. Anyhow NWASCO at last has whipped their baby. As a matter of fact one tends to think that NWASCO does not apply the law to its full extent against LWSC. But anyhow kudos and like the honourable people have said before, it is time to extend this to ZESCO, ERB, ZNBC and other public and private institutions.

  6. Indeed next should be ZESCO especially these days when their power outage has almost become like a normal thing. People on fixed charges are paying for darkness and not the light!
