Mumbwa District of Central Province is experiencing an unprecedented rise in school dropouts due to early pregnancies and marriages.
Between 2005 and 2007, 461 girls dropped out of school due to early marriages, 433 girls drawn from 28 schools left school due to early pregnancy while 206 drooped out of school due to economic reasons.
Government has since expressed concern at the high rate of school dropouts in the district.
Education Minister Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa says the obtaining scenario is unacceptable and should be reversed.
Professor Lungwangwa said government will however continue to partner with other stakeholders in order increase access to education through the development of infrastructure.
Prof Lungwangwa said this in a speech read on his behalf by Mumbwa District Commissioner Dowell Chilimboyi during the official hand over of the newly rehabilitated Butinti Basic School by Christian Children’s Fund (CCF) in Mumbwa yesterday.
He said government will continue to build and rehabilitate school infrastructure in the country because education plays a critical role in poverty reduction.
Prof Lungwangwa said government will not only aim at attaining education for all as a Millennium Development Goal (MDG) in 2015, but will also strive to improve its quality.
He said this will be done by reducing the teacher to pupil ratio, building and rehabilitation of school infrastructure and provision of learning materials to pupils at all levels.
Prof Lungwangwa has since urged parents in the district to concentrate on encouraging girls to focus on education and not rushing them into early marriages.
And speaking earlier CCF National Director Victor Koyi disclosed that his organization has extended its presence in Mumbwa District for another three years.
He said CCF intends to build ten pre-schools and rehabilitate 12 more basic schools during the three years in its efforts to supplement government’s efforts to increase access to education and providing quality education.
Meanwhile Butinti Basic School Head Teacher John Muleka said the rehabilitated school infrastructure has motivated pupils who were once demoralized to have classes in the old dilapidated school building.
Butinti Basic School which was built in 1959 was rehabilitated at a cost of over K250 million.

Galz muletumweneshamo, how can a useless man cheat on you? amayo ba sala ,bcoz of money you end up opening yo legs to any man.ma sisters work hard sku is good, the same men these dayz they need woman who are educated,be careful with john.
Don’t be too quick to condemn these girls. If you only took time to consider their homes and backgrounds, you probably wouldn’t blame them. Charity begins at home.
sisters, if you know dat your background bad, piz ukuichindika kusuma kuti waisangila umwaume wamano.
It is all poverty that leads to this, life is tuff pa zed, these women are looking for economic security, add lack of recreation activities, besides what is around, ineffective sex education, plus ifisungu..i mean what is the point? they teach young girls 98% of satisfying a man in bed, they are young, by this age, they r filled with all these things..you think they will wait to get married after get some education? awe..they will try it out!! after all bi mudala have this notion that sex with the young is better, they want control and need to feel that they still have it.what does a girl know about her body at the age of 13? 15? 18? 24? it is only by 27 she gets the concept?
The number is too much for drop out,if the young girls can not trust the advise from there parents or teachers, let them learn how to use condoms, because to me this looks like they can not abstain from sexual intercourse. This will also led to STD’s if not informed on time.
Xperience is the best teacher! Joni is just to sweet to resist. Be the first one to raise a stone against me if u don’t being sexed by a big shaft!
mmmm kagelo big shaft or crank shaft
Which ever is bigger is the best!
Agree with #11. How can girls who are not inspired continue with school? Parents have long stopped talking to their children, fathers by 6 am are already drinking local brews. Mothers 4 am are off “Kumaoda” getting vegetables to sell.Girls are only talked to when they mature, about how to satisfy a man. Pathetic indeed. No one talks to teenagers about their future and morals anymore. And so the village and the compound remains their standard.
#13 & #15′ you are real. 93% grown up women were being shugged when they were young teens aswell. but iwe kagelo come closer for some intimate business
We blame the girls…..okay. They need to get responsible…but it takes a man to become pregnant (except for Mary the mother of Jesus). The men should also play their part….these un-planned for pregnances are as a result of selfish sex. We (men) will help the girls a great deal if we played our part. Most of these girls honestly need money…especially in school…let’s not take advantage of their desperate situations. “give without expecting anything in return”.
hahahahahahahaa
Jesus is coming soon. Prepare your ways and be blameless on his coming day. For all these problems we need prayer and submission as the devil is taking advantage of man’s weakness ‘sexual immorality’! God bless!

iyo kwena… Zambian bloggers always manage to turn serious topics into cyber comedy.
kagelo! i agree with you that its good, but its not worth it,am also talking from experience,if u do it and it doesnt affect your school or your health then well and good, but these gals are risking their education, sometimes its not poverty its just the love of the game.even rich gals do it,its just that they find a way and get back to school,we cant stop these gals from having sex, lets instead teach them to condomise.
Iam a guy from a neighbouring country. I like Zambian chicks. I am coming over for holidays in Zambia at the end of this year. Leave ur email address here so that I can contact you if you are interested.
poverty is the major contributing factor to the increase in the pregnance pandermic. The best is to stimulate the local industries so that more employment is created

I for one I am one of the very few highly endowed men in the universe. I was in Zambia in 2006 and 2007. I had a great time getting laid by Bemba, Lozi and Tonga gals. They kept screaming and asking for more telling me that their guys are hopeless and I am rare kind. Just leave ur email address whoever is interested and forget bout these jeaulous losers…..
#31 great men dont praise themselves u rubish, dont even talk abt our zam real men am pretty sure those woman u went for date boys .stop foolish talk an be a man loser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reb Bull have you ever heard the theory ( which is true) that unsecure men tend to boast of their prowess in public. So put away your little winky away!!!!! HA HA
#28 well said. Such are the results of the dire economic situation in most rural areas. In most cases teachers are the only salaried workers around and they occasionally take advantage. One needs energy in order to stay in class the whole day and most of the rural folks only have a single meal a day and the girls use their natural assets to get by.
In Europe most girls as young as 14, are on the pill with full knowledge and support of the parents and (I dare say )the society as a whole. Wouldn’t this be a solution for our girls as well?
Kagelo, is it true that size matters???
