Herve Seeks Good Form in Cosafa Cup

Share

Herve Renard searches for his second international victory in charge of the Zambia national team when his side plays Zimbabwe on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup at Secunda, South Africa.

It hasn’t been plan sailing for the Frenchman since taking charge of Zambia on May 16.

Under Renard, Zambia recorded its first win on his watch on June 21 with a fortunate 1-0 win over Swaziland in a 2010 World/Africa Cup qualifier in Chililabombwe.

That win was preceded by a two draws and two defeats the latter two defeats in away games to Iran in a friendly match and Togo in a World/Africa Cup qualifier.

Renard will take comfort that he has presumably the best strikers in the land at his disposal ahead of Sunday’s quarterfinal clash against Zimbabwe.

Strikers Roger Kola of Zanaco and Emmanuel Mayuka from Kabwe Warriors with 10 competitive goals this season are both in the team.

However, they have yet to score in three competitive matches under Renard and flopped in the two qualifying games against Swaziland and the away loss to Togo.

Also attempting to impress Renard will be Power Dynamos striker Francis Kombe who on 8 league goals this season is the top-flights top scorer.

Kombe will be hoping to end his 7-match international draught although he has yet to spark and replicate his league form in a Zambia shirt in 8 games and is aware he is in last chance saloon this weekend.

Renard meanwhile has gambled with Zanaco and Zambia Under-20 midfielder Henry Banda who has barely has started for his club this season.

However, Banda’s good form in the Under-20’s Rwanda 2009 Caf Africa Youth Cup qualifiers against Mauritius have helped earn him a wildcard senior cap for the Cosafa Cup.

Meanwhile, this weekends meeting will be the 4th between Zambia and Zimbabwe since 1997 with the former enjoying an edge.

However, Zimbabwe won 1-0 in their last meeting in a final played on August 18, 2005 although the two subsequently met in a friendly on July 15, 2006 in Lusaka that ended scoreless.

Zimbabwe will be hoping strikers Evans Chikwaikwai and Cuthbert Malajila of Njube Sundowns and Highlanders who are 1st and 2nd on the league scorers charts with 15 and 12 goals respectively can lead them into Thursday’s semifinals.

Winner of the Zambia-Zimbabwe game will face either South Africa or Namibia who are in action today in Witbank.

  1. The defence seems to be ok.Tana,Billy,Joseph,Hachilensa. I have a big ? On the midfield. Upfront i am 55percent ok. Mayuka and kola are gud when playing at u20 level. They need to prove a point. Kombe he is a vete no problem. Mid chaabbe kaya.

  2. Herve you work so hard? you deserve to win this game. All the best for tomorrow.

  3. Lets enjoy the game.I am sure that the Zim eleven have nothing to do with the ZANU-PF policies.
    May the best team win!!

  4. # As much as the SA’s Bafana Bafana has nothing to do with xenophobia therefore lets refrain from associating football with politics and malicious stereotypes. It is called the beatiful game, lets all keep it clean and beautiful. One thing I have realised is that football is a very powerful tool in bringing people together. It doesn’t matter how poverty stricken or war ravaged a nation is, it can still produce a strong team. Irag won the Asian cup last year regardless of he war going on. Sudan is doing far much better at continental club level that most politically stable countries. Just under estimate Zimbabwe’s potential.,,they are in for a kill.

  5. you chaps dont forget Zim has the 2 top leading scorers in PSL.
if our boyz go there with Mosi in thier heads, u gonna be surprised!

  6. Chuchu , now u are raising my bp. 2 top scorer in sa league? But we hve tana, muzo, billy, hachilensa in defence azapita pati? We also hve kombe, mayuka, kola upfront 4goals. Mid we hachipuka ‘zamsure’ and banda u20boy but talented. Its ok let us go boys!!

  7. #11 the top 2 top scorers are in the zim league not psl. Am sure Tana will still deal with them. All the best chipolopolo thump the warriors!!!

That Tana of yoz is old and cant run. I hope Herve gonna use kombe, mayuka, kola together upfront then we gonna have better chances getting goals. GO CHIPOLOPOLO! GO ZAMBIA!

  10. Those useless chaps. ZNBC must be one of the worst in the world! How about on he web? anybody with a link?

  11. Mayuka, kola are upfront. Tana, hachilensa, nyambe mulenga, and kasonde manning the back. Mkandawire, banda H,and some new guys in mid. 4,4,2 our usual defensive formula. Nyambe out chinyama in. 26mts nil, nil. We are playing well so far.

  12. I’m watching Noah Chivuta featuring for SuperSport United live right now, this guy plays so well here. Herve should take a look at this guy.

  13. Mr Aisha are u by any fate mr Mwiinga. Your style looks the same. No malice but just curiosity. You write so well and in a mature manner.

  14. Still nill nill guys 70th minute. Upfront we are not doing fine. Kombe in 4 mkandawire. We have changed 4,4,2 formation to 4,3,3 but all in vain. Its not over until it is over

  15. #33 thanx, I nearly had a heart attack. Abash boooert any anonymous #31 for spreading lies. Shame on you.

  16. Zim goal disallowed. Kombe is not seen. Gud save from mweene. Tana is a suspect i tell u. 6 minutes to go. Herve is not a gud coach guys.

  17. Ya penalt shootout. Herve i am not impressed. This guy is not a gud coarch. All the games we played 4rom the the time he came we are strugling to bit any time.

  18. WELL DONE CHIPOLOPOLO BOYS THOUGH THRU PENALTIES , MWEENE U ARE A HERO U MADE GOOD DECISIONS SAVING AND SCORING ,WHAT A GOOD DEED,WORK HARD ON WEDNESDAY WITH SOUTH AFRICA.

  19. It is worrying that we are not able to creat and take chances. Since we got Harve we have only scored 1 or 2 goal in five games. this is worrying. The only consolation is that we are also not conceeding goals. We need to sharpen our front line, but if our league is so poor in strikers then we are truely in trouble. Can we survive at the world cup or even Africa Cup? The question is, is it the coach to blame or the lack of talent?

  20. has the game ended ,can some good samaritan post a summary of the whole game,I mean how did we fair generally considering zambia unde the new coach.I miss watching my team.

  21. Congratulations Chipolopolo! What has become of the team? Beginning of the year our defense was leaking goals. We seem to have resolved that and now we can’t buy a goal.
Renard, no more vacations. Concentrate on the team. You’ll have plenty of time after September to rest.

  22. Good game ba zed.Bad my boy “Rad” Nyambe Mulenga is injured hope its not serious.Quick recovery boy you still have work to do. Good lucky lads!

  23. Aah,Aisha thanks dude, now i can go out and celebrate.its just 11:50 am here in Louisville -KY and weldone chipolopolo.cant wait to come home

  24. Well done boys. Its hard work without proper resources but we are there among the elites of the region. Please work harder against SAfrica. You have done it before.
Boss! I understand your apprehension and its really a concern for our country.I think we need more investment in soccer in order for us to compete favourably at Africa cup and world cup level. This investment is across the board ie internationally recognised coach who is going to look at the whole structure of zambian football-not just national team, resources and equipment ie Stadia and remuneration. Then we can do it.We have the talent but it has to be developed and nurtured. So far players are sucrificing a lot.Man u is in SAfrica!!

  25. congratulations boys. hope the win can transcend to LPM without waiting for the togo victory. we badly need LPM asap. Quick recovery LPM missing u

  26. I agree with you # 51.During the Patrick phiri era the defense was so porous due to football ya pamenso. Now since the arrival of this french guy we have seen new faces in defense which has yield results.Selection based on merit.

  27. Portsmouth is in Nigeria. Why cant FAZ and the business community invite Real Madrid, Barcelona,Liverpool,Chelsea,Arsenal,Inter Millan etc, etc. The inspiration the boys and staff would get can go a long way in making them aim even higher than the region or African level. We need to mix it with bigger boys even if we lose the matches but we can learn a lot about the modern game.
This is my thinking, i could be wrong but i believe so much in it

  28. Aisha Thanks for the updates and analysis. It helps a lot as i could somehow visualise the game though your updates. Its unfortunate that 32 has infiltrated into our waters.we dont need liers and day dreamers here.
I am yet to see whether Herve is a good coach. I doubt very much though but lets give him time, and it is already running out.We need quality, purposeful play even when scoring becomes a problem we need to dictate games, keep possession and good movement for us to get the rythm for the future.Hope those of you who watch these games can see a bit of these attributes to our game,if not then we are in trouble

  29. Great idea gib but unfortunately, we don’t have the infrastructure to accommodate the kind of teams you’ve mentioned. But we perhaps should start dreaming about smaller teams the likes of Zamalek, Ajax Amstradam and even the likes of Kaizes Chiefs.

  30. #60 i understand your comment but coaching clinics say conducted by Rio in Nigeria,Essien in Ghana and Ivory coast,Andy Cole in SAfrica dont need huge infrustructre. However, it is the same investment into such infrustructure/resources i am calling for.At least we can afford to intice/get them to see big Falls for nothing or get a sponsorship. With planning we can do well here.Zamalek,Ajax, crystal palace[- all these teams can teach us something,so they are welcome and better than nothing at all.

  31. After all this then we can demand the Africa cup if not the world cup.The GVT should give us a national stadium. They owe it to us.
Did you know that some teams cant even manage to provide proper boots for our players???

  32. The infrastructure we have they can use. They are human beings also. Generally the team tried but during zeize and Borrower we use to set pieces nicely unlike herve. We need 1,2,1,2 type of futball and a coach who can stand and command the boys not Herve.

  33. #63 I agree with you.The patern of play can be recognised in the players from their coaches but we need fluency in whichever patern we take

  34. More serious after this game see this from the post today:
THE German government has offered a 10-day training camp to the Chipolopolo Boys next month at a cost of 20,000 euros (about K107 million) to prepare for the crunch 2010 Africa/World Cup qualifier against Togo on September 6.
Guys these are the types of investemnts am calling for.Anyway who are they playing in Germany?we need to look at this but am happy and its good for our young players’s development. To the gvt please give us a stadium.we deserve one.Our boys should not be playing on a 40 000 capacity stadium we need a 65 000 capacity at least(same as old traford)

  35. U are right, now it wont help us to go 2 German with only local players who wont play against togo. If we are to hve a meaning ful camping in Germany we need to assemble our first team, e.g the katongo bros, chansa, jacob, clifford, sinkala, all pros from PSL

  36. We’ve managed to sort out our defence now the problem is our midfield. In my opinion the strikers were ok but they did not get any support from the midfielders. Let us sort out the mid then we will be fine.

  37. Gibby Jembo wakamba maningi nifibola chabe asavitenga personal. However GRZ must work with companies to put up a stadium or some stadia. If a sponsoring company was promised tax reduction and proceeds from the use of the stadium like it is with FNB in SA one may come up. Barclays, Standard Bank, etc have been minting money out of Zed for time in memorial, why cant they come up with infrastructure? How come the same companies are doing it in other countries but not in Zed? It is sometimes political will and leadership needed 4 infrasture development. We are the only country without a proper running track in SADC and a good national stadium. Zanaco can also build a good stadium for its team.
