Zambia’s Olympic Boxing Dreams End

Share

Flyweight boxer Cassius Chiyanika became Zambia’s 4th Olympic casualty today in Beijing after existing in the preliminary round of the boxing event to Vincenzo Picardi of Italy.

Chiyanika lost 10-3 to Picardi who won bronze 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago last November.

The 24-year-old boxer from Nakambala who has been boxing for the last 4 years failed to win a single round despite a promising all-round display against the 25-year-old Picardi.

Chiyanika lost 2-1 in the 1st round, 3-1 in the 2nd in which he matched the Italian before losing 2-1 in round 3 and was later totally out-pointed 3-0 in the 4th.
Chiyanika joins fellow boxers Hastings Bwalya and Precious Makina out of the Olympics to end Zambia’s intertest in the boxing tournament.

Badminton player Eli Mambwe, who enjoyed a 1st round bye, was the 3rd Olympic representative from Zambia to exit the games after he lost 2-0 on Monday night to Erwin Kehlhoffner of France in the two player’s 2nd round match on Monday night.

This leaves swimmers Ellen Height and Zane Jordan plus track athletes Tony Wamulwa and Rachel Nachula still in the medals hunt.

Jordan enters the fray on Thursday and Height on Friday-both in their respective men’s and female 50 meters free-style.

Nachula takes to the track on Saturday when the heats for the 400 meters begin while Wamula will grace the stage on August 20 in the 5000 meters heats.

  1. there are no facilities pa zed so what do you expect. all the funds are for politicians\perks. we reap what we sow

  2. let these chaps try farming coz they are just enjoying tax payer`s money for nothing. kapenta ne bondwe from city market can`t bring any hope to our tiny boxers. lets hope nachula will do something atleast getting into the second round.

  3. they have made us proud by participating i was worried if there was any Zambian and it was good to see them next time guys……

  4. where are the under 23 football teams of the soul 88 olympics? The old zccm who produced the Matete’s,Defence teams of boxing, judo karate where are they?Simple KK liked sports and we where all proud of Zambia then.

  5. #6 . I dont know what you mean. If in 88 we had an under an twenty three and twenty years later you still want them to play then i dont know. Why cant you reason with your head stupid *****.

  6. #6 Wats up and #7 Conman, in 1988 the Olympics were not for Under 23s. They were for full national teams or what are now called senior national teams. So when Zambia went to Seoul they met the senior teams of Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Italy, Germany. The IOC only changed this in 1992 when them and FIFA thought the Olympics competition was eating away on the glamour of the World Cup. Thats when they introduced Under 23 competition for soccer. Most coaches then used the olympics as a preparation for the World Cup. Remember when Klinsman destroyed us he cemented his place for the 1990 World Cup.

  7. Conman, #7 i know this is the only privelledge for you 2 share some discussion with people you will never measure up to in your life. However its pointless to argue a point with you as you were born retarded. However you who you are ( an open fool )and know one will change this.Even most of your contributions show how frustrated you are with life.Sorry dude just accept its life.

  8. How do you expect to win at the Olympics when sports or physical education is not so much emphasized at schools, high institutions of learning and work. You can be a banker of IT specialist but still be a good badminton player or swimmwer!!

Our policy on sports is weak. Its gigo!!

  9. PANIO, AGALU ABEMBA, U ARE ALWAYS LOSING, IT IS TIME WE GET OTHER TRIBES INVOLVED IN SPORT. WE DO NOT DO GOOD BECAUSE OF TOO MUCH ABEMBA INVOLVED. BAKOLWE, AKAWALALA

  10. Dont say bad things about our olympic team, just see how countries who have more than 20 representatives on “medal tracker” are performing.Go to, si.com ,scroll under medal tracker. So far,Zimbabwe tops in Africa with 3 medals all from one person .And theres algeria and Togo with one each.

  11. Condolences but keep on trying. At least you carried the flag of mother Zambia, especially that you were sandwiched between two great nations ( Australia and China) on the opening day. I simply enjoyed the sight of our flag between these two giants.

  12. And on the possible inclusion of Andrew Sinkala who play for Germany second tier side FC Augsburg and clubless Mosses Sichone, Renard expressed that they are not in his plans at the moment.

“They are not in the squad but maybe for the future. I have heard about them but I don’t know them,” said the 39 year old.

  13. we need to put in so much in the investment of sports, one sad thing is that the ground breaking ceremony for all africa games had to be postponed becoz of levys absense, its makes me wonder if we ready to host the tournament with the kind of display am seeing at the olympics and the preperations towards hosting the 2011 games,we do not have a single starndard running track,we dnt have a boxing ring were fighters can really train, let local bodies like Zaaa, faz, bbc go into the rural areas and these other towns to tap talent,,and to the corperate world its not just soccer that needs funding but althletics and swiiming were i think we can do better.were is the spirit of 1988 olympics,

  14. That was expected. Can we compare with the sports giants of the world? Its like expecting Zambia to win the FIFA soccer WC.

  15. atase ba zambia..y did u even waste all that flight time 2 china..if u went 2 admire chinese chicks,,even here we have some..some of u chaps claim ur from the army…ah .none of the boxers even had ova 5 punches..its a disgrace..bwelene fye.

  16. Mupezani No.11 from which cave are you from?Who told you national selection is based on tribal lines.zambia is based on one Zambia one nation motto/slogan.e.g our soccer national team keeper is Tonga, kalilo should be from north western,we have Bandas, phiri, mwendabai’s – its balanced of course on merit.

What does this fly expect. His tribes men with little proficiency & prowess to be adopted.Come on wake up you can do better.

  17. #11 Mupezani mambala uli chipuba, a very ignorant tribalist fool that you are you even think Hellen Height is Bemba, Ruth Nachula is also bemba in you your very simple. You also think Precious Makina is bemba, you stupid *****. Thats why we never move forward as a nation, because of riff-ruffs like you who always pull us back 100 steps when ever we make 10 steps forward. Chiimbwii!!

  18. u chaps want to act as if we ever had a realistic chance. beijing was but part of an educational journey. tukafikako one day… but till then be realistic.

  19. Ou boxers are talented but raw talent and thats just that. These boys need good preparation including advanced training where there are good facilities, you could see the environment overwhelmed them, lack of exposure, lack of scoring technique, etc. They did not train under the same envirnment and rules, they do not understand what is required of them in the ring to appease the judges. They just box and box with less scoring.Anyway, this might be a wake up call for govt to help these guys before the All Africa Games 2011 if at all , we will be ready come 2011.Which I still doubt, convince me people.

  20. baiche, its time for bussines
buy those tuma good mobile phones and digital cameras and bring them to zambia, two metres one (K2,000,000)you will make a bit of cash.

    bali mi puma kale.

  21. #19 & #20 There is absolutely no need to have a go at #11, she is not a tribalist i actually tend to agree with her. Zambian sport is full of mbembas. The Zambian sports federation should try going to other parts of the country where they will find raw talent. I agree that there is a mixture of tribes in football and we want to see this in other sports too.

I’m not saying this is the reason why Zambia is underperforming, our country is underperforming because of the lack of facilities, resources, finance and support (as someone has already pointed out).

I was however very pleased to see the Zambian flag during the opening ceremony as i was worried we didn’t have any representatives.

  22. #25 don’t be another fool. Tribe has absolutely nothing to do with performance in sport. If you are good at something, Zambians will rally behind you regardless of your tribe….examples are abound, I don’t even know what tribe Matete is, but I was 100% behind him when he was flying the flag, why? because he’s Zambian, starts and ends there, full stop!!! Lottie Mwale, Esther Phiri, Melissa Nawa (Golf), Ruth Nachula (long distance running), Hellen Height (swimming and shes white), Yotam Muleya (greatest marathon runner ever for Zambia and he was Tonga), Amon Simutowe (Chess and first black African Grand Master)…I could go on and on but shallow guys like you are not worth the effort!!

  23. Its sad we are out of boxing. However i miss the days of NOM as a contributor to such discussion sites. He/She posted good pieces around 1999/2000. How i wish we could all contribute minus insults, it would enrich this site as a source of information

  24. Well #27, call a Spade a Spade, anyone who sees nothing wrong and agrees with #11 also agrees with the insults against Bembas and in my book, are tribalists. They deserve to be called fools because #11’s statement is probably the most foolish statement I have ever read on LT. Absolutely crap!!

  25. I wish we could have a platform for bloggers to fight literally as in a boxing ring let say every friday.

From this kind of set up Iam sure we will have some success stories at the olympics.

  26. imwe the only answer to the problems of sports in zambia is to make it compulsory for all the companies to participate in all the sports events. If companies were forced by the government to have teams, Zambia can eventually pick up in terms of sports at international level.

  27. The way forward is to introduce and develop new sporting facilities around the country. Togo has just won bronze in Kayaking, a sport quite new in Togo and the rest of Africa. First time a non-european has ever won a medal in this sport….point is you never know what our young people around the country are good at unless you introduce various sports to them. You can only do this by actively developing provincial sporting facilities/arenas in several disciplines. All provinces could then compete at national level in Lusaka, this way you have a good system to pick the best from each province. Now, this sounds more logical than suggesting that one tribe has to barred from competing.

  28. These chaps are too light and spend much of their time smoking weed and drinking kachasu…what do you expect?they should be disciplined in their diets..tough luck guys!maybe 2014..

  29. #8 Point of correction your statement and I court “So when Zambia went to Seoul they met the senior teams of Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Italy, Germany” is wrong, Zambia played their first game Vs Iraq 2-2 draw beat Italy 4-0 in the second game and beat Gautamala 4-0. Please check your facts brother before posting on this blog.

  30. Even Zimbabwe will zillion rate inflation has managed 3 silver medals so far. Zambia the real Africa!! With sick presidents and people like Mpombo running the show, what do you expect?

  31. Point of correction soccer fan number 2. Countries in Europe then were not allowed to feature soccer players who had featured in the world cup to player in the Olympics. So Zambia did not play the full Italian side but promising players who had no world cup experience.

    Check your data.

  32. Ok I don’t agree with #11 about the tribal thing but I do see where there coming from. If you look at our sports stars most of the come from either Lusaka or the Copperbelt. And the copperbelt is full of Bembas. I mean the Great Kalusha Bwalya is from Luansha in the Copperbelt and Sam Matete from Chingola again COPPERBELT. So it is possible that our teams are full of Bembas. I feel as well as MAJOR investment in our sports and I mean MAJOR we also need to look at those outside of Lusaka and the Copperbelt. I mean the country is more than Lusaka and the copperbelt.

  33. Well said #38 (I’m sure that’s what #11 meant with her comments), #26, #20 & #19 take note and learn to be a bit more diplomatic with your arguments rather than jumping to insults.

#31 you’re absolutely right, provincial tornaments are the way forward, perhaps you can put this forward to the Sports Federation for future consideration.

  34. Corrected version

#8 Point of correction your statement and I quote “So when Zambia went to Seoul they met the senior teams of Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Italy, Germany” is wrong, Zambia played their first game Vs Iraq 2-2 draw beat Italy 4-0 in the second game and beat Gautamala 4-0. Please check your facts brother before posting on this blog.

  35. Why even send these bunch of losers to the Olympics? A shear waste of tax payers money. These chaps should just continue drinking chibuku from 6 to 6. Best regards,

  36. #39, have you read #11’s insults or is it that you are the same person using two psuedo names? Bembas don’t come from Copperbelt, though it is the widely spoken language, if indeed you are Zambian you should know this. And Great Kalu is not from Luanshya but he grew up in Mufulira, just shows your ignorance. Anyway if my comments on #31 don’t make sense to you then I might as well give up. You are just a hopeless tribalist. To you insults don’t count as long as they are aimed at Bembas….

  37. The next two Zambians to compete in the Beijing Olympiad are swimmers, both of whom are not based in Zambia (one Australia, other UK). They stand a better chance than the boxers did.

  38. Daniel # 37 is right during the 1988 Olympics Players who had played at the World Cup were not eligible to play at the Olympics.
But Germany had players like Thomas Hassler,Karl-Reinz Rieddler,J.Klinsman who went to win the World Cup in 1990.Brazil had players like Careca,Romario,Bebeto,Ricardo Gomez,Ze Carlos,Claudio Taffarel who also went to win the World Cup in 1994.Italy also had Luigi De Agostin,Maurro Taggotti etc
This shows that most teams were strong despite not having players who had played at the WOrld Cup.

  39. Justice #40 I think you are getting bogged down in the wrong argument. This usually happens in a lot of unregulated debates like these ones on blogs and websites. People hang on to a peripheral point go on a tangent about it in trying to make points out of it but then the debate suffers. I may have quoted the wrong teams but that is not where my point or argument lies. I doubt whether you check all your facts before you post them here. My point is that in those days there was no under 23- sides. Period. As for # 37 Daniel Europe preferred not to send their stars to the Olympics for strategic reasons. It wasn’t the rule. The olympics soccer competition was unrestricted before 1992

  40. Zambia’s record at the olympics since inception,,,,,Poor indeed
    Medals per sport
    Sport Gold Silver Bronze Total
    Athletics 0 1 0 1
    Boxing 0 0 1 1
    Total 0 1 1 2

    Medals per year

    Year Gold Silver Bronze Total

    1984 0 0 1 1
    1996 0 1 0 1
    Total 0 1 1 2

  41. Here is some Olympics history; check it on the olympics soccer websites:
Up until and including the 1988 Seoul Games, the Olympic soccer tournament was an unrestricted event and the U.S. Olympic Soccer Team was essentially the U.S. National Team. However the tournament structure has changed since that times and the restrictions on age and experience of players involved in Olympic competition has been under review by FIFA, who makes all tournament recommendations to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

  42. Sibs you are actually right to a point because before 1980 the competition was for amateurs only but this changed in 1984 when they said all players were eligible. Africa was only exempt from this rule because the national leagues were all amateur except for Egypt and Morocco. This is nearly the same as when they introduced Baskeball and allowed pros to compete.

  43. Remember the olympics were originally meant for amateur competition. That has proved difficult to maintain and as a result professionals are now part of the competition but the difference is that in the olympics there is no prize money except for the gold medal you get. Your national association may offer its own incentives but these are outside the Olympics prize structure.

  44. #38 King of Lusaka and other misled Zambians. Kalusha Bwalya is not Bemba. Most likely he is Aushi or from Kasoma Bangweulu. ‘The Copperbelt is full of Bembas’ is a misleading blanket statement. The Copperbelt is full of Aushis, Ngumbos Lundas, Ngonis, Kaondes, Lambas, Malawians, etc. Bemba just happens to be the dominant language. I was born and bred up on the copperbelt. I speak fluent Bemba but I am a Ngoni. Its a cosmopolitan urban place which manifests the future of Zambia. It doesnt discriminate unles uli watulo palobe. Some rural products usually fail to adjust and fit into CB life so they become misled fools like #11 who now sees Bembas as his enemies. Wake up!

  45. #51 Ok you misunderstood what I said. I said the copperbelt is full of bembas I didnt say that there are only bembas there. My dad is from the copperbelt but he isn’t bemba he is namwanga. But like you said bemeba are the dominant tribe there so its statistically anyone from there is more likly to be bemba than any other tribe. I also said its POSSIBLE that are teams are full of bembas. I didn’t say that everyone in the copperbelt and anyone on our teams are bemba. And I didnt say Kalusha is bemba. Just like Western provine is full of lundas but not everyone there is Lunda. Or southern is tonga though not everyone there is tonga. Please learn to READ before you call me misinformed.

  46. King of Lusaka #54 you have to make yourself much more clearer than this for anyone to understand your point. I never said Bemba is the dominant tribe on the CB. Your words not mine. I am restating my argument that your statement ‘The copperbelt is full of bembas’ is not true. The copperbelt may be full of people who speak Bemba but not the Bemba tribe. The majority of immigrants on the Copperbelt are from Luapula. Their languages are similar to Bemba but they are not Bemba. In your earlier argument you cited Kalusha and Matete to support your statement that the CB is full of Bembas but like I ve said Bwalya and Matete are not Bemba.

  47. However, for most misled people everyone who comes from Northern Province(and Luapula) is Bemba. That is why even you who is Namwanga will be called a Bemba by misled people. And these are the people who will say the copperbelt is full of Bembas. Dominant language and dominant tribe are two different things. For example; The Tonga are probably the dominant tribe in Zambia because they have larger numbers than any other tribe. But Bemba is spoken by the largest number of people in Z so its a dominant language. I think I Have made myself clear.

  48. The Zambian Government never learns!!!! Where does sport sit in Goverment? What is the strategy for the delivery of Sport in Zambia? Has Zambia got an Insitute of Sport that should be responsible for delivering sport? Look at the sports Council and the people in ZOCAGA…Zambia’s sport establishment is a sham!!!The Guys at the Olympics did very well especially Zane Jordan the Swimmer. This is raw talent but it is a shame Zambia has no strategy to develop athletes like him and many others that have tried. Investigate The national Sports Council and ZOCAGA. There’s no transparency in the management of Zambian Sport.

  49. How many officials did Zambia send to the Olympics? Zambia should investigate the so called members of the Olympic committee to highlight issues related to bidding and hosting the Games. This will provide Zambians with vital information in relation to why some of these *****s in ZOCAGA and National Sports keep their arses rooted in these organisations. Do they have interest in developing Sport in Zambia? Hell No!!! They take advantage of All-Africa Games, Commonwealth and The Olympics for monetery gains!! And these are *****s we’ ve got managing our sport. No wonder we progressed very well…not!!

  50. Where are the Zambian Swimming Coaches!! Where are are the Zambian swimmers. Did anyone expect a medal from Ellen Hight at the Olympics. At 27yrs old doing 27 seconds 50m Frontstroke and you expect a medal. Did she even Qualify. Zane is 17yrs old doing 24seconds very good athlete in making. Get more Zanes out there. You got a pool of them. Get the Zambian coaches back and let them train the kids with a heart of developing swimming in the country!!

  51. Ellen alluded to the fact that between April and September there’s absolutely nothing in the Zambian swimming calendar. Over the years she has had to leave the country to prepare for tournaments. This has been very costly for her family. She was in England for almost 4 months prior to Beijing. The moral of the story is that various sports organisations should put up facilities for our athletes. Zane is attending school in Australia and that is where he trains. As we dont have facilities in Zambia he will be forced to leave and scavange abroad for training facilities.

  52. Stop lying to yourself!! Attitude towards traing is Zero. Bottom line is she did not qualify for the Olympics with 27 seconds. Call it the way you want. There is more capable swimmers that can be encouraged…biasness in swimming!! As for Zane thank God he is in Australia. His attitude is positive. As for Ellen time has been up for a long time. Ellen has vast amounts of exposure which other poor kids would just dream of. What are you talking about!!?!!!!

  53. Training for the Olympics and Preparations are not designed to create a hole in any parents pocket. It is the responsibility of the swimming federation to arrange training arrangements. The IOC has a responsibility to help financialy and I guess you did not know that. Is this Ellen first Olympics? I do not want to say the obvious but you lot choose yourselves in name of ‘lack of funds’. We have worked and lived in Zambia for over 35yrs. My sons have swam Lusaka and the then Nchanga before. The truth is there is quite a goog number of Black Zambian swimmers that can be very well prepared if given similar opportunities as Ellen. I am not questioning Ellen’s Zambianess but there is not balance.

  54. #Sandarsen can you mention any swimmer in Zambia black or white whose done 27 seconds in 50 meters? As for Ellen I am not exactly sure as to what you are talking about. There is no way she would have participated if she did not meet the minimum requirements for olympic participation. Please lets do without this crap about discrimination. There was only one white person (Ellen) in the team, one mixed race Zane and 5 black Zambians. All these were picked for their competences in their respective disciplines. The question of balance does not arise. This is the same kind of nonsense afflicting South African Sport.

  55. The South Africans are insisting that the rugby springboks should reflect the colour shades of their country. This is absolute bollocks! If black people are not good at Rugby so be it. The USA never insists that their basketball or sprinting teams should reflect the population of the USA. Thats why these teams are always black. Their swimming teams, horse teams etc are represented by mostly white athletes because they happene to like and be good in these sports. So Sandarsen spare us this grief about the need for balance. Just because our two swimmere were mixed race and white we should not just ‘balance’ the numbers for political correctness!

  56. You must be very naive and if anything very silly. I am not propagating the issues of how South Africa runs sport. We had Ngoma and Kanchela. The best Swimmers that could have been groomed properly and by now we could have repeaped medals through them. What happenned to them? How many Ngomas and Kanchelas are still there? Stop being defensive and do not quote me wrongly like I am insitigating racial issues. The fact is for long time this has happenned. If you want proof we can give you proof. ‘Spare you the grief’ you must very naive as seen by your analysis. She did not qualify and stop giving Zambian’s false hope. What a lot of nonsense. And please talk about Zambia not SA!!

  57. Sandarsen you are one crazy dude.#67, 68 has just pointed out the cheap insuanations you are making. Check your post 66 where you mention ‘black Zambians’ ‘similar opportunities as Ellen’ ‘but there is not (sic) balance’. What do you think this nonsense you have written suggests? Like the dude has said Ellen met the minimum requirements for her participation in the 50M Olympic swimming dash! Its unfortunate she did not make to the next round. By the way do you have any issues with her; you seem to be coming out very very angry and bitter.

  58. Sorry for giving you that impression Mwape! But can someone tell me what has happenned to the swimmers I mentioned. I have no issues with Miss. Hight as I do know her personally. As for Mr. Mbulawa, The racial representation of SA sport cannot be compared with that of Zambia. Zambia has no room for any racial nonsense. But why has Ngoma and Kanchela not in swimming anymore. How about the other one that just swam the channel!! Give an explanation quit concentrating on one blip that was not intented. Where are the other swimmers?

  59. Sandarsen, shut up and listen!!! Ellen did very well. You obviously know jack about swimming in Zambia. As for the swimmers you are looking for, some of these guys are retired or pursuing other careers. Kanchela is in Australia, Ngoma is in the States (the other one in Scotland). The channel swimmer is having a beer with me right now. It is not easy to swim in Zambia. So Sandarsen, it’s either you do your research and consult the stakeholders or you shut the f..up!! Go Ellen and Go Zane. See you in 2012 London!!

  60. Easy on Sandarsen He/she’s point is validy. Look up the Race Theory/Race Ideology and make your argument. AS for # 70/71 do not be too quick to judge and become afraid to discuss race issues. The South African Govt. has taken that move logically. If you want a justification, look up at the history of Rugby league and Union. As for why Basketball is predominantly black, it goes to show how limited your knowledge is about sport and the varied participation patterns. So Sandarsen, please do not apologise. What do these people know about swimming anyway. Look these up and present issues based on fact. However, Ellen is a worthy swimmer.
