The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chapter has condemned the acts of harassment by the cadres from the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) on journalists .
In a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today , MISA Zambia Chairperson Henry Kabwe said the action by the cadres violates the right of journalism to cover public events freely .
The MISA chairperson said such acts should not be allowed in a democratic state.
He has however called upon all political parties participating in the October 30 presidential by-election to restrain their cadres from harassing journalists .
Mr. Kabwe said during the times of elections, the electoral act and electoral code of conduct empowers journalists to provide coverage to all political events in a free and peaceful environment.
He however urged Police Inspector General Ephraim Mateyo to ensure that such behavior is stopped and journalists are protected during this period.
And ZNBC Director of Programmes, Maxwell Ng’andu says he is saddened by the MMD cadres’ attacks on journalists.
Mr. Ng’andu has called on all political parties to exercise maximum restraint when dealing with journalists.
He said journalists should be left to conduct their duties without harassment.
Among those who were attacked are ZNBC and Muvi TV news crews.
And the Zambia Centre for Inter-Party Dialogue (ZCID) has also condemned the MMD cadres for harassing journalists in Lusaka, Saturday.
ZCID Spokesperson, Langtone Sichone described the attacks as uncalled for.
Mr. Sichone has urged journalists to soldier on with their noble duty.
Some MMD cadres in Lusaka Saturday morning ran amok and harrased journalists from both the public and private media who went to cover their solidarity march.

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata, has said there will be no presidential elections in 2011 because whoever will be elected president in this month-end’s election is supposed to rule for five years.
And Mr Sata has pledged to restore dignity to Kabwe town by reviving all closed and ailing industries in the once mining district, if elected president.
Speaking at a public rally in Kabwe at the weekend, Mr Sata said that whoever would emerge winner in the October 30 election was expected to reign for five years and therefore there would only be parliamentary and local government elections in 2011.

I think Sata’s cadres should not be too excited as if he has alredy won the electio.From the way i see things i think RB might just win these elections becaus he will be the second best in most provinces unlike HH and Sata who only dominate in a few provices.For example Sata will have the largest votes from C/B followed by Lusaka,Luapula and then Northen.Note that out of these provinces only Luapula and C/B will be almost 90%.Note that Luapula is a very small province.But then RB will most likely be second in most of these provinces and will have Eastern to himself and HH.He will have decent votes from N west,weste,centr,Southe,Northen.Sata needs to reach out to more provinces to win an ele
