Zambia celebrates 44th independence anniversary

Share

Zambia celebrates her 44th independence anniversary on Friday.

However, the celebrations have been overshadowed by campaigns as political parties make their last minute efforts to woo voters ahead of the October 30 presidential election.

Political parties are engaged in activities in various parts of the country to sell their manifestos to the electorate.

Government has also canceled the investiture ceremony at state house, a permanent feature of the independence anniversary celebrations, to allow parties to continue with their campaigns.

However, some events took place, especially in Lusaka, to mark Independence Day.

Acting president, Rupiah Banda, on Friday morning led diplomats accredited to Zambia and service chiefs in laying wreaths at the Freedom Statue in Lusaka.

The ceremony was attended by some cabinet ministers, senior government officials and former rrepublican vice president, Nevers Mumba.

Other dignitaries that attended the ceremony were Chief Justice Ernest Sakala, National Assembly Speaker, Amusa Mwanamwambwa and FDD president, Edith Nawakwi.

The theme for this year’s independence celebrations is” Facing the Future with Hope.”

And Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second today congratulated Acting President Rupiah Banda on the 44th Cerebrations of Zambia’s Independence.

The Queen also wished the government and the people of Zambia happiness and prosperity in the coming year.

British High Commissioner, Ms. Carolyn Davidson, also added her congratulations, saying relations between Britain and Zambia are excellent.

“We hope to further strengthen links between the two nations for the mutual benefit of the Zambian and British people,” said Ms. Davidson in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Ms. Davidson said the United Kingdom government was impressed at Zambia’s good democratic record in the region and hoped the government would take all necessary measures to ensure that the forth coming Presidential election meet international standards.

She said this was an opportunity for Zambia to show the world that it was a beacon of democracy.

  15. #3 FTJ. SATA is a very busy man. He is delivering his manifesto while rupia is bribing people with vitenjes, brown envelops, sugar, conmeal, name it. You think SATA would be a Rubbish Briber (RB). jUST CHECK THE POST. MEN AT WORK ISN’T IT?

  16. Happy birthday Mother Zambia and fellow Zedians! Simply proud to be
‘Facing the future with hope’ May we rise to this challenge. I am starting with a small farming plot. One day at a time. Mwemakufi mwinenuka.

  17. Former Zambian FTJ Chiluba to campaign for RBB in Luapula Province as reported by Sata’s mouthpiece The POST. This time Chiluba seems serious about making sure Sata does not get a chance to get to Plot 1.

  18. i came out of povert by myself
i make money all by myself
i give to charity all by myself
i solve problems all by myself
So what the huck has this celebration got to do with me?
i would rather do my own thing than celebrating never ending straggles. for simple things like food, shelter, health services and education i would struggle to buy a 747 boeing than this small nonsense.

  19. Don’t over celebrating by drinking to death the chibuku that RB & co. will buy your votes with. Think like human beings with five senses. Be independent. You are too important to be bribed with chibuku, sugar, mealie meal, and very cheap chitenje material.

  20. 44 YEAR OF STABILITY IS A GREAT ACHIEVEMENT. HOWEVER, 44 YEARS OF NOTHING TO SHOW ECONOMICALLY IS UTTER STUP!D ON THE PART OF OUR LEADERS. FELLOW ZAMBIANS, FOR ECONOMIC PROSPERITY KICK OUT MMD AND LETS DEVELOP OUR BELOVED AND ENDOWED ZAMBIA. VIVA ALL PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA.

  21. #24 It’s more likely that you’re pleased with yourself for freeing yourself, after seeing yourself in a world by yourself; but not knowing yourself enough to question yourself about yourself has enslaved you! Seen?

  22. i forgot it was 24 cto until i opened the lusaka times. then words of kaunda came into my mind.i later thought in chizungu this is what i came up with

TIYENDE PAMODZI NDI MTIMA UMO x2,
kaunda tiye, tilipamodzi x2 ndi mtima umo
we walk together with one heart x2
kaunda we go,we are together x2
we go together with one heart

  23. As we celebrate this day,we have to ask ourselves what we mean (as a country)by being independent. Independent from colonial rule?…. certainly; political independence?….to a degree; economic independence?…..not really!(economic imperialism still exists).Nevertheless, we will celebrate for it is our DAY and as we do so,let’s reflect on what went wrong, why we have so much poverty in our nation and how best we can alleviate this problem. Indeed we have to look to the future with hope for hope is something we should NEVER lose!! Long live Mother Zambia and her people! Please, vote wisely.

  24. #28 Supergal I like you!! hahaha funny. Happy Birthday Zambia!!!

May love and peace and Joy be ours to not take for granted or throw to the dogs…Peace

  25. Countdown: 5 days 5 hours 50 minutes remaining and we are counting.

Vote for HH for a real ray of Chnage and Hope that all Zambians can believe and trust in. vote for your children’s future. Vote for economic independence

To this end, I ask RBB and MMD to quickly endorse HH for Zambian President. Munkombwe was quoted as saying the Sata may win if MMD makes a single or simple mistake. So, MMD stand up for what is right. It is not too late for RBB to infrom the Nation through ZNBC TV and radio with Times of Zambia together with Zambia Daily Mail that let all vote for HH.

May you all Zambians have a great weekend. I am leaving for a SABBATH recess. Thank you all for you support.

  26. STAND AND SING OF ZAMBIA PROUD AND FREE.

  27. “And Mr. Mwaanga has urged presidential candidates in next Thursday’s poll to accept the outcome of the elections. He says a legislature must be put in place were presidential aspirants should declare to accept elections results. The veteran politician has also openly declared his interest to support Mr. Banda adding that he himself is yet to decide on his political future.”

Exactly nobachi-bululu ba Mwaanga VJ. There is no need to panic for the 30th october, 2008 elections will be free and fare. meanwhile, vote for HH for a sound social, economic and political environment in Zambia starting 4th November, 2008.

  28. Mateyo advised police officers to ensure total discipline during the campaign period and warned them against taking sides in politics but to remain neutral.

Earlier, Ng’uni urged police officers to lessen the habit of drinking beer heavily during the campaigns.

“Especially those of you who are renting in shanty compounds. Finding yourselves in taverns all the time is very dangerous because you risk being killed, or you have a sticker of a political party stuck at your back,” Ng’uni said.

  29. Lets also avoid peer influences when it comes to drinking and violence.

“The IQ of a mob can be determined by taking the IQ of the dumbest member, and dividing by the number of members”.

    Keep that in mind.

  30. We ZEDIANS in WUHAN, CHINA are celebrating 44yrs of independence. We came together as students to celebrate our day by having a Party. God bless us Zedians.

  31. VJ can do whatever but he should know that his days are numbered. its very bad what he does… we know he has been behind rigging elections for sometime now but i’m happy he’s so skinny now that i don’t see him living in the few years to come. happy independence PF and the entire Zambia

  32. Happy birthday zambia and happy more days.May peace prevail for ever as you see us your children ride in the boat as we say viva pabwatoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  33. Proud Zambian, stand at attention!

    Lumbanyeni…. Lesa Lesa wesu.
    Apale calo… Zambia Zambia Zambia.

Litumezi ahulu Mulena. May you bless us all.
    Happy National Day fellow Zambians.

#Help what are the origins of the name Zed?

  34. # 47 nice peace of the vernacular version of the zambia national anthem and it is very refreshing just like that of maestro though the latter is unpredictable coz of his level of tribalism, otherwise thumbs up lads

  35. # 47 the country is named after the Zambezi river. I think ‘Zambezi’ would have been a better name than Zambia…

  36. NEW YORK (AFP) – The New York Times endorsed Barack Obama for president on Friday, saying the Democratic hopeful has grown into the kind of leader the United States needs after eight years of George W. Bush in the White House.

“Hyperbole is the currency of presidential campaigns, but this year the nation’s future truly hangs in the balance,” began a lengthy editorial in the nationally-circulated newspaper reviled by conservatives for its liberal slant.

    Sensible jounalism not pa Zed!

  37. Today is a day of reflection. We must remember tha politicians of yester-year who selflessly fought for Zambia’s independence.Politics was not employment for them. It was a conviction to free the people and give us our country. Our thoughts to Kenneth Kaunda, Simon Kapwepwe, Harry Nkumbula, Grey Zulu, Chitandika Kamanga, Arthur Wina, Elijah Mudenda, Lewis Changufu, John Mwanakatwe to name but a few.
We must pay homage to the Pan-Africanists. Jomo Kenyatta, Julius Nyerere,Nkwame Nhrumah,Milton Obote, Samorah Machel, Sam Nujoma etc.
    We must remember Maina Soko.
In 1991, multiparty politics came back but the One Zambia One Nation motto did not die and should not be allowed to die .

  38. 44 years but nothing to show for! All Africans think about is how they are going to be rich. How they are going to buy the best car so their neighbour respects them

Corruption is worse than it was in 1964. Infrastructure is worse now than it was 20 years ago. All an African thinks abut is how he is going to build the best house so it is out standing than those in the neighbourhood.

  39. Whether we get tired or not, the duty and obligation to develop our own country Mother Zambia is ours. “There is no place like home” so we always say but take a moment and define what is ‘HOME’? for you as a Zambian. Most of us have never thought we dont understand the the word although we use it everyday. So, with or without problems, in or out of Africa, Black or white, Rich or Poor, Rural or Urban,………. lets try to make Zambia a better place to live in and a place to call home no matter how far you may be.

HAPPY 44TH INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL ZEDIANS

  40. #49 thanks. Zambia derives from Zambezi, that is what I know but, what is this ZED (Z.E.D)? Secondly, who coined the name Zambia from Zambezi?

(stretch.dj) you raise an interesting point, a topic I have longed to discuss and pursue with fellow Zambians ‘Why not call our country Zambezi?

“There are economic, social and political benefits in the name Zambezi than in Zambia” Have your say. God bless you all.

  41. #57
Thought provoking. In the mean time:

Happy 44th Independence Anniversary fellow Zedians!

Happy 44th Independence Anniversary fellow Zambians!

Happy 44th Independence Anniversary fellow Zambezians!

  42. Happy Birthday Mama Zambia.
We didn’t celebrate cause we got no high commission in Ghana. Nonetheless we join fellow Zambians in celebrating this day from the balconies of our apartments

  43. Zambia … people and land dear to my heart … I was teaching in Zambia when we celebrated the 10th anniversary with so much happiness and hope. Even now I sing the Zambian national anthem on this day every year!

    One Zambia! One Nation!

  44. # 57 i agree zambia is named after the river zambezi but the first name was actually zambesia and kapwepwe and the other boys arrived at zambia

  45. Kaufela bana bahesu kwa bulozi, malubale, mambunda, mabemba, matonga cwalo cwalo kaufele, namibiza kuli luvotele munana yo HH.

    Musike mwa saba, mulimu uteni.

  46. #48, Mposepo, thank you for everything. I will just remind you that Tonga Bulls are always advanced. Take care and all the best.

  47. No.57: The name Zambia was coined by Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe. the original idea was to name the country Zambezia, then Kapwepwe chirped in stating that “why don’t we just say, Zambia?”

And so the country came to be known as such. But this is not the full story, what was under discussion was what to name the Kaunda party that had broken away from Nkumbula’s ANC. It was eventually called Zambia ANC (ZANC). The country’s name is derived from ZANC. Ask KK or Sikota Wina. They were present and are both in Lusaka.

  48. What Independence??? maybe you have forgotten what the word means, commemorate that 45 years have passed and we have not had civil upheaval in the country, well we still depend on donors to fund our national budget, pay our legislators, fund hospitals and any other project on paper..so plaese Zambians stop making noise about independence we have not yey achieved it yet,First you need to start from your brains then everything else comes …
