Catholic Sisters of Mercy in Mazabuka have sourced K789 million for the construction of a new school in Siyowi area of chief Mwanachingwala.
Mazabuka District Education Board Secretary Darius Kaluba, who disclosed this to ZANIS in Mazabuka, said the Ministry of Education was happy with the positive contributions the Roman Catholic Church was making in supporting the education sector in the country.
Mr. Kaluba said a contractor to undertake the project has already been appointed and work has already begun.
He said the new school will have seven classroom blocks and two teachers’ houses, adding that it will also be connected to the national electricity grid.
Mr. Kaluba explained that only two teachers’ houses will be built from the initial plan of building five units.
He said this was because the first contractor, who was awarded the contract, did not do a good job, adding that the work was condemned by inspectors of infrastructure from the Ministry of Education.
He added that his office was forced to demolish the entire structures that had already reached an advanced level.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Sisters of Mercy have recruited 50 trained teachers who have since been posted to the remotest government basic and primary schools in the district.
Mr. Kaluba said the Sisters have also pledged to meet the payment of salaries to the teachers.
He said the move taken by the Sisters of Mercy deserves commendation because government alone cannot effectively deliver proper education without the involvement of other key stakeholders.
Mr. Kaluba said besides the Sisters’ financial and material support to the education sector, they were also teaching at government schools as volunteers and were helping government in mitigating the problem of staff shortage in schools.
Good work! show this sleeping goverment what you are capable of doing. ;;)
Why do Catholics bother? I wouldn`t!
Viva catholics. They are working whilst sugar daddy is dozzing

This is very commendable. I was educatedin the catholics secondary school for 5 years, and graduated with excellent results. The catholics have shown that they place a high value to education. keep it up
Can some politician now tell the Catholics that what they are doing is political. No. When it suits them MMD will do anything to embrace any Church that comes along with a project. On the other hand when the Church comes out and says the Political leaders need to be compassionate and look after the citizens we are told Church leaders are being political and should concentrate on preaching the word of God and leave politics to politicians. Our Political leaders should stop practising double standards and face reality. The Church is a partner to politicians without any inclination of benefitting from politics and therefore its contribution positive or negative should be treasured always
ola people:)>- Father christmas where’s the xmas spirit in ur comment shuwa. They bother because its not about the government its about innocent people who suffer because of bad government decisions. Everyone deserves a chance to get a proper education and we need more things like this put the gvt to shame for their uselessness:-\”
The church is part of the country in fact politics is part of the church! politicians should let us see what they are doing not just announcing figures of growth on paper and yet thier is nothing show for!Zambians lets be agrresive and let them know politicians that they are our servants and we pay them through the taxes! I ALSO THINK MPS SHOULD BE TAXED IN ZAMBIA! to help to build natinal development see we are all zambians including constitutional office bearers!
Why are catholics raising money when they have the most money in the world. Why not just give back the peters pence they claim from all governments. The irnoy in this is like giving a rich man money from the poor.

I hope your statement was meant as a joke and should be taken in that context and not as some serious blog.
Go to orphanages and see how the Catholic are atking care of AIDS and abandoned children under difficult and trying conditions. Their raising of the money is more or less in the same context. As catholics now we do and have to support ourselves here in zambia. And i am not surpirised that you can say what you are saying. You’ve not seen how people tithe K50’s and very few K50,000 as tithe. So where does the church get the money you think makes them rich? Open you eyes my friend.
ba number11
thanks for your dry joke. =d>
#11 I hope you were joking. The Catholic church is not rich but simply uses resources it generates properly. Its not like some pastors who spend K2 million on dog food after receiving tithe. Again its not like politicians who spend thousands of dollars to buy expensive vehicles. They buy simple Toyota vehicles which they keep for years.
Congrats sisters and only God will reward you for the work.
When i was told by a Brit friend that she was heading to Mazabuka to help the Catholic sisters build a school in June this year, i took it as one of her holiday trips. Now, i know she was on a serious mission. Naba chitawala bamangeko ka skool lyonse masuit chabe.
:d/:d/
#11 your comment is uncalled for. The catholic church is it’s congregation made up of individuals who dig deep and sometimes sacrifice to build this this nation schools, hospitals, orphanages and so forth.
If you have nothing positive to contribute be quiet! In fact you need Jesus.
#11 Your comment is a black skull of lack of wisdom to reason with those who need more help and voiceless to be heard by those who are suppose to provide them with basic needs for survival. You are in UK because some people made it possible for you and many of us. Let the Catholic also give our future generation the same chance as ours. All the flowers of the tomorrows are in the seeds of today.
Remain blessed everyone and many the Catholic continue with good works for mankind.
THIS GOVERNMENT IS RUBBISH!!!! CHAPWA!!!
Well done sisters. Nambala 8 walikwata amano mudala and you are objective. Keep it up buddy.
I will forgive #11 if you are not catholic, hence your misunderstanding of the Catholic system. You are not the only one, many think that the Catholic church is rich, it depends on what you mean by being rich. It takes a lot of humble contobutions from so many people, rich and poor alike, to come up with such projects. The fact that some Catholic personel drive, the Church has some infrustructure, they run schools, hospitals, orphanages and other ventures, does not mean that they are rich. It’s all a matter of priority. And, one thing for nothing, as some have already said, the Catholic Church is only good when it does projects like this, when it talks, priests are arrested. FOOD FOR THOUGHT
When I raise funds for a school, a hospital, an orphanage…etc, I am called a saint…all praises, but when I ask why we have no schools and hospitals, or indeed the shabby standards in the existing ones, I am lebelled “political”. What should I do?
# 4 The education sector is not the only sector which needs the attention of the church. The New Apostolic church of Zambia assists in other sectors but with less publicity as this was the way of our Lord Jesus Christ,s life( working silently but with huge results) Visit the New Apostolic Zambia church office in Olympia and get more data if you wish.
If We handed over the reigns of this nation to the Catholics to run methinks they would do a better job in 5 years than those joker leaders have done in the past 40. RB and co learn something.
BABYKRIS r u a member of NAC why do things in quietness i want a school by my church where my children can be brought up and taught in line with the doctrine **==
